Consider yourself lucky you got anything to Laythe. I finally managed to land on Mun after 3 game-breaking bugs required me to restart from scratch. Most recently I lost 10 hours of progress. All my craft files, save games, even the campaign itself, all gone. The crafts that come with the game are gone as well, even after starting a new campaign when I go to load a craft in the VAB I get an empty list. The first game-breaking bug was when my in-flight save games would load me INTO a meteor with my engines at full thrust... all of the auto-saves and manual saves did this, had to restart the flight. My theory as to why this game released in such a poor state is that the investors were threatening to stop supporting the project unless they started getting a return on their investments, so T2 forced Intercept to push it out the door at the cost of some reputation. Personally, I highly HIGHLY prefer KSP 1's UI. It just seems FAR more readable and the stuff you need to read at a glance is distinct and easy to read. In KSP 2, a lot of the UI feels samey and hard to read quickly at a glance. As you said, height rounding above 100km, no TWR, etc. For some reason, the UI also feels more cluttered now. Maybe it's just familiarity, but I don't think that's it. I think the new UI has potential and could end up being very sleek, but it needs a lot of tweaks to me.
@Conmonman
@Conmonman Жыл бұрын
I think part of the issue is familiarity. This UI is a lot more accessible for new players imo. So much more information is there (specific numbers of resources per staging for example) that was either hidden behind a menu or wouldn't show up without context (being in use or right clicking). For a veteran player whose been on the wiki or youtube videos a lot of that information is disseminated already. Examples would be like: SAS Trackball is more readable and clear. Your ship points to the one you select. I didn't use SAS auto for pro/retrograde in KSP for the longest time, because I didn't realize what those buttons were at all. Everything is contained in boxes. While they take more space and look a little uglier, it is very easy to tell at a glance what you are looking at and see all the relevant information. Again in KSP1, a lot of that info would be behind menus or wouldn't pop up unless in use. It's more readable too, as things are clearly separated out rather then a mass of drop-down menus that look the same. (The part manager would be a good example except they then immediately made it list every part which is insane) The APP toolbar looks so much cleaner and seems like it lends itself better to play then the "put everything and then scroll" toolbar we have now. Not a personal fan of the aesthetic but in general it seems like this UI is a lot more new-player friendly then KSP 1 was (especially at release pre-delta V, etc.)

Early Access was originally supposed to be about needing help getting FUNDING to finish your game. KSP1 was the first big Early Access success story, IIRC. This publisher has deep pockets and doesn't need our money. Getting help finding bugs is what Open Betas are for (and Early Access includes that as well, as you said). Anyone else notice that REACTION WHEELS can change a craft’s orbit? The acceleration not only defies physics, but is so drastic that I’ve given up on orbital rendezvous (an intercept of 100m distance and 10m/s becomes 2km and 100m/s simply by leaving SAS on) Also, when undocking a docking port, it immediately re-docks without enough time to fire rcs thrusters. @agsystems8220

The really worrying thing about that is that it means that forces that are external (such as engines) are not tracked separately from internal forces. In KSP1, (and just about every other space game built by people who know what they are doing), total vessel momentum is tracked separately from local physics. Phantom forces are almost impossible to avoid, and even miniscule forces throw off space games by massive amounts, so usually you pin the CoG of the vessel to a description that is entirely shielded from phantom forces. Phantom forces occur, but the vessel is forced back onto the correct orbit. Forces able to affect orbits have to do so explicitly (kraken drives with docking adaptors are still possible because docking adaptors do affect orbits), which means that forces arising from interactions between parts cannot throw off orbits, and specifically torques cannot throw off orbits. The reason this is so concerning is that this is an example of a class of bug that should be impossible, if the game architecture were smart. It isn't that they have got this far and not fixed it, it is that they have built the whole game on a system where it is possible at all, because that is not easy to change. They already have more technical debt that KSP1.

@@gloverelaxis I wouldn't go that far. I think they underestimated how good the systems of KSP1 were, and how difficult it would be to match, let alone improve upon them. The indie nature of it makes it look like something simple, when it is really not. KSP2 looks like it was made by a team of experienced Unity devs who had built games from off the shelf components, with some tweaking. They thought they could build Kerbal 2 this way. That's why the detail design, such as the particles, models, materials, and the sound, are fantastic. For most unity games, the detail design is the hard bit, and what 'makes' the game, so this is an understandable error.

One of the main promises after the announcement of KSP2 was larger scale. Not just interstellar travel, but larger ships and more parts, all while keeping performance stable. Its why the games advertisement always showed huge space colonies, giant space stations and generation ships. This expectation wasn’t just fostered through visual marketing material, but explicitly stated in developer interviews. The games foundation is in such a rough state. If this is their work after three years of delays, why should anyone believe they are capable of developing such a sequel? I don’t think they are capable.

Building a space station would also, given enough modules, result in a wobbly mess… I distinctly remember docking a module to my first space station and quickly going back to tracking menu to reset physics. It’d eventually become wobbly again. Accidentally pushing T, of course, killed many space stations. Framerates were terrible as well, though I struggle to recall what GPU I had at that point, might’ve been 780Ti, though my recollection suggests I got into KSP 1 earlier than that. You might expect KSP 2 to avoid pitfalls of KSP 1 early access, but… why tho? Without knowing how much of KSP 1 DNA (by that I mean codebase, physics logic in particular might or might not be transferrable) is in the game, it’s hard to predict anything. It seems that the devs weren’t lying and it might be quite some time before the game’s in a playable state. It’s fine though. As long as it gets there.

I’ve been playing KSP on and off since 0.4. The biggest advantage that game had is that it didn’t have the pressure of having to be amazing from day 1, we just loved it flaws and all because there was nothing else like it. KSP 2 has significantly more expectation to do everything better from the get go, the fact they are charging near-on full price for early access lifts that expectation even higher. Bare minimum there should have been more work on the performance efficiencies, the game runs like shit at the moment.

They literally could have just kept the original engine, added new planets, changed the textures, new models, and re-worked the UI and we could have had a satisfying 'sequel' in 2020. But Five years after development began and we're left with an eye watering catastrophe. It's incredible. I don't even think No Man's Sky did this bad upon release. 2:16 Literally my favorite addition in KSP 2 is the sounds and engines. Scrolling all the way out from your rocket and hearing the distant cracking and popping is so awesome. Just wish I could do it with a framerate higher than 15 fps. Another thing I love to is the music changing along with your throttle. Hearing the music spike up after slamming throttle to full when in orbit is so awesome. 7:40 one thing that is missing from the UI for me personally is something that was in the bottom left. Being able to move your maneuver node and fine tune it using the small window in the bottom left was so helpful. Also when you brought up Zomboid being in early access, to be fair, the game is like 10 years old at this point lol. Used to watch a youtuber called Eckyman play it back then.

It should be illegal for developers to charge full price for a barebones early access game that is not the full release version. There needs to be legislation brought in for it. It needs to be percentage based, and a time limit placed on early access stage. The game is 30% complete, ok the price is 30% of the final retail value until it's released. You should be legally obligated to release a concrete roadmap of ten stages of development. If you are at stage 4, you can charge the maximum of 40% of final retail value. Stage 1 should be legally required to have a playable game that has saving/loading functions working, a minimum frame rate target that is consistent, with at least one functioning gameloop for players to engage with. Not only would it encourage developers to get the game done properly, it would force them to release a much higher quality minimum viable product, and move to release much more quickly and not sit in early access for years. "you can't give out to us, we put early access in the title" needs to go, and it needs to go since ten years ago.

The stock craft files are apparently corrupted or gone, probably to reinstall to get them back (I never even loaded them, I don't use them, just saying how ridiculous this is). That was my third game-breaking bug, the first was when my in-flight save games would load me INTO a meteor with my engines at full thrust... all of the auto-saves and manual saves did this, had to restart the flight. I have ZERO faith that I can put effort in to getting anywhere in the Kerban system (other than mun maybe) without it being a huge waste of time. One my biggest gripe that isn't the unacceptably bad performance is the UI. I feel it's extremely bloated and uses space very inefficiently compared to KSP 1. It feels like I am reading a text file zoomed in 200%. At the same time, it is harder to read some of UI text because of the terrible font design. The pixel art font just blurs into a mush when it's downscaled. Also, I feel the altitude number being just another digital number on the navball is a bad design decision, specifically for new players who may not know anything about space or how to launch rockets. I mean think about it. In KSP 1, why is the altitude meter in particular this gigantic number with a very fancy and visually stimulating scrolling animation that also communicates rate of change? It's because it is THE most important number for someone who just plopped their first rocket on the launch pad. Think about it from the perspective of a new player who knows nothing of spaceflight and doesn't want to read a bunch of text to get started playing the game. Spaceflight is confusing, but big number go up good! Big number go up faster better! This is clearly communicated to the player without telling them anything. That is why it being just another digital number on the navball is bad.

They let journalist and KZbinrs go play it early with all bugs present, and have been pretty upfront about it being in a buggy state. Anyone complaining is clearly not a tester/or familiar with research and development. Early Access means you will receive access to an unfinished game. There will be bugs, things will break, your experience will be subpar in some aspects. The beautiful thing about early access is that this is a controlled setting and an opportunity for you as a “tester” to give feedback to the devs so that they can fix the issue/s you report which will make the RELEASED version of the game BETTER for everyone. Either wait for the final release or participate in helping the devs make this game better by submitting your constructive criticism. It’s called being an adult.

As someone who loves playing KSP, I was excited for the release of KSP 2. However, after trying it out, I don't think it's quite ready for early access. One of the main issues I encountered was the game's performance, which isn't up to par. My PC setup includes an RTX 3080, an i7-7700K, and 32GB of RAM. Also, I find the UI frustrating to use because there are too many menus covering much of the screen, especially in the VAB, and the basic controls are different from what I'm used to in KSP 1. This is a significant change for me since I've spent thousands of hours playing KSP 1. I hope they'll introduce a legacy UI or controls for the people used to the original. I also noticed that the pro-grade and target marker would change in the map view, so even though I was pointing at my target in normal view when I changed to the map view, my rocket would do a weird flip and suddenly went retro-grade ruining my mission to rendezvous... Indeed the audio is amazing! Honestly I'm a bit disappointed with the game's current state, I'm hopeful that the developers will address these issues (and many others) in the future. As of now, I wouldn't recommend KSP 2 However, I'm optimistic that, like KSP 1, it will eventually become an excellent game with some necessary improvements. For now I will be heading back to KSP 1.

The game is too frustrating to play A lot of people will go off of first impressions when deciding to play a game and if they have bad first impressions then they most likely wont come back even if the game has fixed everything they had an issue with just due to the sour taste in their mouth from playing it. I know corporate is most likely responsible for pushing a 50 dollar early access. However assuming that wasn't the case what the devs really should have done was allow people to sign up to beta test and 5,000 people would get the game for free to beta test and as a reward for doing this they get to keep the game for free even when it does come out to early access and beyond. I'll keep persevering. Thumbs up from me (so far).

Really good tutorials and guides within the game is a great idea. But I'm quite surprised there has been work done on that front before nailing the basics in the game. Seems the devs are at the first steps of "so how should this be improved over KSP 1?".

I agree with all that you mention in this video. There are lot of bugs and some disappointments, but I know that is also a lot of potential. Little tip for everyone: when you can't send your rocket to the launching pad, go to the facility viev, choose one of the launching pad and load previously saved rocket, that you want to launch. It works, and you don't must to relunch the whole game. For me, the worst bugs were: 1. last save's (even if I quicksaved or saved manually) I had was an 2 hours old 2. rockets or parts of rockets are self-blowing without any reason 3. keys H and N for forward and backward moves for docking doesn't working properly at all 4. (not bug but it's serious for me) lack of important information about fuel, precision manouvering, center of gravity doesn't change if we are changing quantity of fuel in hangar, some other bugs, which sometimes occurs, and for some reason sometimes not I will be looking forward for changes in KSP2, because it has potential, looks beautiful, and I know that modder society brings this title to perfection, like it was with KSP!

I just did an apollo style landing on the mun and ohh boy the game hated that. The maneuver node just stopped working after I separated craft in 2 pieces (lander and orbital bits), I had tons of fuel in all stages but after a save and loading back in half the time it would say I had 0 fuel in everything out of nowhere. Once I had my kerbals unable to eva for literally no reason with red squares over their icons. When I did land on the mun I saved, changed prospective to the orbital vessel then back and when I went back to my lander it was inside the mun falling into oblivion. Tried to rocket my way out but of course the surface is still the surface even from inside the planet so poof. I loved ksp 1 and had high hopes for this game I am sure it will get ironed out in time but a simple thing like... how much fuel do i have in this part... doesn't really exist you click the part and its just blank, its kind of a frustrating mess atm. The Launches and countdowns at the space center are great tho lol! I haven't rendezvoused yet or docked because of all the problems I just come online to see what people are saying and yup... seems right.

Thanks for the honest review. Far too many people seem to be lost in their pink-colored world of release ecstasy and can't see the problems. You highlight both the good and the bad. IMO one of the things KSP2 needs most is thorough optimization. KSP1 could calculate physics using a potato for processor; how monstrously bloated and inefficient must KSP2's simulation be to require 3070 or better.. Not to mention that even 4080s struggle to give you stable FPS and run into painful stuttering and framedrops.
@simonpettersson6788
@simonpettersson6788 Жыл бұрын
The 3070 and 480 you are referring to are GPU's and they don't calculate physics. They calculate where to draw pixels on the screen. The CPU does the physics, and at least according to Scott Manley the CPU load is less in KPS2 than in KSP1. Can't verify because I'm not paying for this before it's playable.

how can you charge 67 dollars for a game in EARLY ACCESS? at least be very clear that the game is nowhere near finished and you shouldn't buy it unless you are an avid supporter that wants to invest/support the game. Or give a discount for early access supporters or better yet make it free until full release. without that there is no motivation to actually finish the game because they already made bank. Man, the save one is awful. I hope they've fixed it before letting people buy because if there's one thing that sets long-lasting negativity towards a game it's wiping your progress arbitrarily, for me at least. I can't say I was optimistic about the state the game would launch in given the considerable delays, (what I felt was) little communication, and the things that pass for early access, but it has me worried that even people who have every reason to try to love the game can't even give a cautious recommendation loaded with caveats. Hopefully at worst this is a No Man's Sky situation and the performance and feature upgrades that come down the line make this a game worth playing.

But how many of us wanted to love no man’s sky, decided it wasn’t worth it at initial release, and still haven’t played it many years later because of the poor initial impression. The way KSP1 did early access was great because we didn’t expect anything from it. We didn’t complain so much about missing things, because we didn’t realise what we were missing out on. But here we do. Here we know exactly what we’re not getting for our money. And I’m one more person who will spend my weekend playing KSP1 rather than getting grumpy at KSP2

I am gonna give my personal view. I am what you would consider a beginner in KSP. I played the first game for some hours (20+) and am now playing the 2nd game. Until now (3 hours or so) the game did not crash once. I did all the tutorials consecutively (which are really good and intuitive btw) and the game did not crash. The new UI is much more beginner friendly and approachable then the windows 98 looking UI from the first game. I have been having lots of fun with the new game. I can, however, understand some of the frustration you shared in this vídeo and I hope KSP 2 continues to evolve because it has the potential to be far better than the first one. I hope the team does put their all into this project and I hope the money and player feedback they got from their early access launch will help them achieve their goals faster

I would accept this state at launch for an early access game that was built from the ground up. What makes this whole situation sad and worrying is that a full blown studio spent 2-3 years of development on an existing game to deliver a game that doesnt even does the basics of the first game. They lied to us about what would be delivered all this time. Now I understand the lack of gameplay and actual info before launch. I feel my trust betrayed tbh

They were extremely honest about what the game would be at the beginning of early access. They released the minimum and recommended requirements. They explained why they were so high. They said that a number of what some people would consider core features would not initially be present. They said that performance would be spotty. Hell, Nate Simpson flat out said that for some people waiting a bit would be the right option. I'll happily criticize them for the pricing which is definitely too high, but otherwise I can't really think of another dev team that was so up front about what they were "releasing."

Along with the more serious bugs I've noticed some fairly funny bugs. My brother made a ship and when detaching a lower stage it just didn't, but then it slowly moved up phasing though the main ship then disappeared leaving nothing of the stage behind. I learned that heating didn't exist yet so decided to take a quick visit to Kerbol, but when my orbit got below 1km my camera started spazzing out (good thing I'm not epileptic because *wow* ) and then the ship spontaneously disappeared (RIP Valentina). Another experience I had was if you take your kerbal out of a ship and then timewarped, the kerbal would move, but the ship would not follow. This would fix itself when exiting timewarp.
