you are incorrect when you said no one uses the docking mode. I must have had a buggy install or something but when I first started docking, I J K L never worked, however H and N have always worked and I always use them for encounters and rendezvous. on a side note, I love all your videos and they are what got me to play KSP and greatly helped with the steep/vertical learning curve. From barely making it to orbit to making super efficient inter planetary ships that go to several planets in one mission, I thank you for your knowledge and look forward to all your future videos
@d2factotum9 жыл бұрын
TheArchaicFuture I also use docking mode, mainly because I find the IHJKLN layout completely anti-intuitive--I always forget which key to press to perform the correct translation, whereas WSAD + Shift and Ctrl works better for me. It's also the control scheme used by a Kerbal on EVA, after all.
@emperorSbraz9 жыл бұрын
i used it now i don't, but it's mainly for the capability of rotating while translating when moving poorly built unbalanced spacecrafts. :)
@LordRanilin9 жыл бұрын
d2factotum If you stop and look at the key layout on a standard QWERTY keyboard, it's actually the same controls as WASD with Shift/Ctrl. IJKL is the same layout, and H/N is your replacement shift/control, also in the same layout. Maybe that will help you to find it more intuitive - it's the exact same layout shifted right a few keys...
@d2factotum9 жыл бұрын
Michael King That helps a little, but I tend to use Shift and CTRL with my little finger while my three main fingers are resting on WSAD; can't easily do that with H and N because they're too close in to IJKL, and also the N is offset from the H. Maybe if they'd used G and B instead? :)

The very first thing I learned when using my Munar refueling station back in 0.9 was that anything close to 10km or less is fine for rendezvous around the Mun XD I actually managed to rescue some of my landers when they were only 10km over the surface, and let me tell you, seeing the surface going by that close to your craft is SCARY...

I ran out of fuel on the way to a Minmus encounter. Using just RCS I went from an orbit around the sun to landing on Kerbin. RCS is a life-saver!
@Edgewalker0019 жыл бұрын
Since the inclusion of reentry heat and heat shields in 1.0 I've actually made all my Munar landers in this design just because of the added heat shield weight. By keeping the heat shield on board the drive section you can make the lander much lighter. The very first two craft lander mission I sent to the Mun was actually a rescue mission to bring back Jebediah after an ill fated attempt to reach the Mun using only a hastily slapped together lander and my normal Kerbostationary satellite launch rocket configuration. It got to the Mun, but ran out of fuel 20000 meters up and Jeb only survived by landing using his RCS pack.

Make it look so easy! Should be up to the point of trying docking this weekend.
@jimstanley_497 жыл бұрын
Another note on RCS and rotation: RCS is super helpful to dial in an intersection node for rendezvous, but a rotation with RCS *always* imparts some amount of translation. ( _Maybe_ not roll, or if your thruster placement is _perfectly_ balanced....) It's super irritating setting up a 0.0km separation from the other side of the planet, only to forget RCS is on when you need to align a solar panel or something and a pitch up throws out your rendezvous by 500 meters.

I use docking mode. To many randomly placed translation keys to remember.
@HeadHunterSix9 жыл бұрын
Arnav Kalgutkar I'd hardly call them "randomly placed" - they're no different from WASD, just in a different spot on the keyboard. And then two more for forward and back, placed right next to IJKL and one above the other. It becomes second nature as easily as WASD is for most of us, in about as little time.
@Slithy9 жыл бұрын
HeadHunter I've remapped them to make more sense. My choice is "I" for forwards, "K" for backwards, "J" and "L" for left and right, "U" for up and "O" for down. This way it's even easier than stock, after some adjustment.

PhilfreezeCH I've traveled almost 1000 kilometers on the mun's surface using time acceleration and a manned rover. They aren't slow if you build them durable. Mine can safely operate at speeds of 30 m/s, depending on the terrain. The difficult part is to make them both durable and lightweight, while supporting a crewmember and having all the science instruments strapped onto it.
@orbitalvagabond32979 жыл бұрын
Robert Scott I concur with Phil: Rovers are painfully slow, and would be extremely ill-suited for this particular case because of the large incline Scott would have had to drive down to reach the target. Also, the additional weight of the rover would have required more fuel than the fuel needed to "hop" between locations. Overall, rovers are useful on worlds with higher gravity (Eve, Tylo, Kerbin, Laythe, even Duna), but otherwise you're better off using a "hopper" to get between locations in terms of time, mass, fuel, and frustration.

Idk the specific issue, but i found that RCS has different control scheme depending on whether you're in Docking Mode or not. In my game I cant do anything without the Apoapsis and the Periapsis nodes bugging out and jumping wildly around. It becomes nearly impossible to tell what my altitudes are because they fluctuate so rapidly between a few 100 meters. Does anyone know why thats happening?
@bbgun0619 жыл бұрын
Remy Pohl It's just because of rounding errors in the calculations. A few hundred meters doesn't matter very much when your orbit is 10km or higher. However, a wobbly ship can make the numbers less precise. So use more struts, and make sure you aren't rotating.
@paschalconneely23749 жыл бұрын
Remy Pohl Its your orbit entering a near perfect circle. Well done! Your Pe and Ap are on the threshold of flipping and the game gets confused about what to do. It is an ideal orbit if it is low enough because each point along it is roughly the same height and so any transfer burn you make will be at Pe and so will be most efficient for raising you Ap.
@dedpez9 жыл бұрын
Is using the RCS with your main engines during Kerbin orbit or transfers beneficial or a waste of monopropellant?
@headrockbeats9 жыл бұрын
Ded Fez Monoprop has a very low thrust and a very low Isp, so it's always more wasteful than other engines. I'm pretty sure it provides too little thrust to actually help in large-scale maneuvers. You saw how long it took him to stop when approaching that orbital station. By comparison, a simple space engine would've done it in a few seconds.
@dedpez9 жыл бұрын
Headrock I'll rephrase the question. Does using the RCS at the same time you're burning your main engine add anymore thrust? If it does, does that extra thrust save on fuel usage from your liquid tanks, meaning you have more delta-v later on? I see the time for a maneuver go up and down during a burn when using and then not using RCS at the same time as your main engine. So there is some added thrust. I always have extra monopropellant so I guess it's really a question of whether not it's a waste of effort to hold down the key while executing a burn. Oh, and no need to compare monopropellant engines to the other types. I have a basic understanding of the differences between engines in this game and their uses. Really the second sentence was all I needed. I appreciate it though.
@lostincyberspaceIII9 жыл бұрын
Ded Fez I haven't done the math but I bet it would be better just to pull out the rcs fuel when you are building in the assembly building if you aren't going to use it for rotation, translation and stability.
@Tuzszo9 жыл бұрын
Ded Fez To put it simply, if you're ever in a situation where you have enough spare RCS fuel to use during a large maneuver, you'd be better off just not bringing that RCS in the first place. However, if you do have the RCS and nothing else to use it for, yes, you should burn it during orbital maneuvers.
@puskajussi379 жыл бұрын
it does help but usually its effects are neglectable. Generally its best to take the minimum ammount of monopropellant you can with you, often none if you don't need to dock, and use the extra payload capacity for extra lf+o. Also note that altough RCS helps immensly with docking, it can be done without it.
