No I said that if you want to go to other planets then it's inefficient to use a munar encounter, because the munar encounter limits your ability to exploit the oberth effect to attain the required hyperbolic excess velocity for the transfer. Simply getting to interplanetary space and not going far can exploit a munar gravity assist, but you wont't go fast enough to get to another planet.

Yes I'm all over this story right now, trying to get more info. The Russian Event is almost certainly unrelated to the 2012 DA14 close approach. I really meant to make some videos but I had so much going on it was hard.

Well in this specific case it's the demo version and docking isn't supported in te demo. But the other reason that you see less of this in KSP is that the amount of delta-v to land on the Mun is about 1/4 of the dV needed for the real Moon, so the advantage is smaller, and if the advantage isn't always big enough to justify the extra mass for the second crew module, engines and other options. But of course, I like building missions with separate landers because docking is fun :)

Went to the Mun, planted a flag, ran around and fell over, a lot. Got back in the shuttle, took off and landed on Kerbin with the landing gear. All this thanks to you! I did however build my own shuttle, without watching yours, more fun that way. And i did have a little bit more fuel than you but i was a little bit wasteful and barely made it back. Thanks again!

I got 3 Kerbals on the Mun. When I returned I ran out of fuel so I used RCS to close my PE to about 300,000KM above Kerbin. After that I used my inertia to orbit back around and then times it so the Mun gave me a gravitation assist right smack into Kerbin where I opened my chutes and returned all 3 astronauts safely. Now I feel so proud. I also have numerous satellites one in Geosync and lastly a rover that used the skycrane to land like Curiosity. 90% thanks to you Scott for teaching me :D

Been there, done that. Officially as of today, I have made a landing on the mün through the demo, all thanks to Scott Manley! Thank you so much man! I didn't land with my ship though... I bailed as soon as my ship lost all of it's fuel, then I made the last hundred meters with a jetpack, and proceded to bounce for a half mile. I think I might just have enough jetpack fuel to get back home with Bob. :/ Back on topic: You're the best Scott! I couldn't have done it without you!

The dotted lines connected between two orbits indicate an angle, if the first orbit is tilted off-axis relative to the second orbit. You can adjust this angle by burning northwards or southwards on the point where the dotted lines appear.

Thanks allot! Now I can get to the Mun without problems. When i saw your video I used a bit bigger space-rocket design (like you said we should may make it bigger) and now I get allot of science points for my save file! With my design i got back easily too Kerbin! But I couldn't do it without a nice tutorial like this!

Thanks for the video! I was never able to successfully orbit the Mun before, but after watching I not only orbited, but successfully landed as well (snapping one leg off on the impact but staying upright). Like you, I struggled with fuel, having only enough to get me to 35K, but after one orbit Kerbin sucked me in. It was intense!

Really fantastic tutorial, I used it to land safely on the Mun with no trouble, and then immediately decided to repeat those steps and land a second craft less than 1km away, that was easy up to the part where I had to figure out how to do that, managed it finally after a lot of trial and error because I would crash and lose all control of the craft just trying to get hopping closer towards the first craft (thank god for the additional quicksave function) This is the last time I ever attempt to go to the Mun without at least 1 RCS fuel and quad thruster on my lander. Managed to have a safe and nominal return back to Kerbin for the first lander, but unfortunately the second ran out of fuel quick due to all that hopping, that should have been done with RCS.

The periapsis is the lowest point of an orbit relative to the body you are orbiting. In this specific case he was keeping the mouse over the yellow periapsis, which is a second orbital projection after the Mun's gravity catches the craft. The purple line is a third projection after the craft escapes the Mun's influence, if velocity is left unchanged, so it has no importance in this case, since you want to stay in lunar orbit. He was lowering the Mun periapsis so he can establish a lower orbit.

Ok. Just managed to do this after many tries. It was pretty epic and now I am obsessed with space travel both real and virtual. FYI whenever I quick saved with my landing struts deployed and then reloaded that save the struts would be floating next to my spacecraft! Also I tried it when I was landed on the Mun and when I reload my ship just fell on its side! Funny now but at the time I was mega pissed. I don't know if this has happened to anyone else, anyone? I love your videos and without this video I would still be drifting in space without a clue. Chapeau!

For me, Scott Manley is the official spokesman of kerbal space program. He's incredibly knowledgeable, humorous and able to take things from rocket science to layman's terms without making me feel like an idiot, (which I do often and well enough on my own, thank you.) And, while I have stranded many a kerbal deep in space, thanks to Scott, I like to think that number is slightly less.

the composite of a meteorite is discussed by many but the fact it's shining com from airfriction causes it to heat up and glow, and it can explodes if a certain liguid or solid is turning into gas by the heat and builds up pressure inside the meteorite and when the pressure reaches too high it bursts and explodes.

Instructions were great. I landed on Minmus and jet packed around a bit. I had significantly less fuel on board, not the best pilot, and couldn't get a return with what I had. Using 0.21.1 though so simply reverted to the VSB prior to launch. Will try again and see if I need to pilot better or just add more fuel. Thanks for the tutorials.

Just to clarify Scott's answer which lacks a bit of information if you know nothing about these terms: apogee and perigee are specific to orbits around the Earth - from geo. We can also talk about apojove or perijove for Jupiter, or aphelion and perihelion for the sun etc.

Mun has far lower gravity than Kerbin, so the Oberth effect is much more limited there. You could gain a small amount of delta-v from the slingshot but any fuel you choose to burn would be better spent near Kerbin than near Mun.

As a last resort I always get the ion engine attached to the command capsule with the xenon container on top and a few batteries/solar panels around it. With this ive never ran out of fuel yet. Its not enough to get you off a planet but it is great for orbital maneuvers(even if it takes a shit load of time).

The po-ta-toe VS po-tah-to situation is ridiculous since it's pronounced po-tay-toe. Adding difference designations for different bodies helps a lot when discussing interplanetary missions where multiple SOI changes occur, and the orbit needs to be described with respect to different bodies.

Ah, I remember doing mun landings before the maneuver node system - wait until munrise and start thrusting :). It don't think it even told you if your orbit intersected the mun's SOI, although you could still use the map view. So a lot more guessing. But still feasible. The node system really helps when you have the other planets.

I've experimented a little and found out if you place your Mün transfer maneuver at your nearest ascending/descending node, you get a guaranteed transfer to the body of your choice, though it's more inefficient than the technique Scott mentioned but the difference is miniscule. Maybe 10-15m/s difference. But it works for me everytime.

apoapis is farthest from the object you are orbiting. periapis is closest. So, if you change orbit with thrusters, they will switch because one point is now further than other. And it used to be closer.

19:45 Just a note: Apollo 8 was not organized to be a moon landing. It was originally to be a test flight of the combined Command/Lunar module but the lunar module wasn't ready yet. That meant some jostling around of flight planning and instead it became a more dramatic command module-only mission to the moon and back.

As far as I understand it, since asteroids are made by collisions with other rocks, they are inherently unstable. When it hits the atmosphere at a high speed, it essentially 'breaks up' on the inside, and when it collides with the thickest part of the atmosphere there's finally too much inner and outer stress and the whole thing comes apart.

It always amazes me how small the rockets you make are and how they can still do so much. It makes me wonder if I really needed such a big rocket ( using the larger diameter pieces) to do the Mun mission I just completed. I did it the real life way with 3 crew, a separate lander with for 2 crew and command module and with docking and undocking in Munar orbit and all that jazz. I though I optimized my rocket, but then again I needed 36 SRBs, so maybe not. It was over 700 tons at launch :).

No offense intended, but that's largely the 'lies to children' version. Firstly the heating isn't friction it's ram pressure that causes the air to heat up. The bang you hear in some videos is a sonic boom, that's what caused most of the damage. Asteroids 'explode' on re-entry because the dynamic pressure and deceleration get too high and they asteroid crumbles, pancaking itself in the airstream, increasing the cross section and dumping a lot of energy in a small section of the trail.
