Species: ALRE has some interesting evolution. It's basically natural selection and adaptive radiation, starting off with one little species and eventually many interesting and unique ones. It doesn't have much for messing around with them though, other than changing mutation rates and reviving extinct species. It also doesn't have a planet, just a little area of land.

Scott! Great video! My Grandfather actually worked on the Thor missiles during the 60s-70s, the Thor missiles aren't intercontinental but they can make it to space when launched upward. They would build them, load them up with nuclear warheads, and launch them at Russian spy satellites. So, for future reference, just use a nuke mod ;) Thank you for the awesome videos! Btw, this was all really top secret until I believe President Truman bragged about it on TV. It was also pretty unreliable in terms of funding, so some weeks he would have 10 workers, the next few weeks it would just be him. They would also be pretty unreliable rockets. Sometimes the rockets would come out of the silos and have no more vertical velocity but start drifting sideways. They had to have a technician there ready to blow it up if stuff like that happened. Then they would have to evacuate nearby cities due to the toxic cloud of rocket fuel (this was at Vandenberg). He ended up quitting after getting fired due to budget cuts then being rehired the next day. He wanted job security. XD Anyways. Sorry for the story, thought you may like it if you end up reading it. Thank you for the awesome content sir!

***** The only payload it mentions was thermonuclear warheads, that was the rockets sole purpose, to deliver nuclear warheads. We had no technical ability to program a rocket to slam into a spy sat in the early 60s. We took the area-of-effect route.

***** That's not how energy transfer works. If anything, the nuclear blast would have a greater radius in space because there is no atmosphere or houses or other objects or terrain to get in its way. Think of the sun, there is no oxygen between us and the sun yet you still get a sunburn.
@CarterDDana9 жыл бұрын
***** I don't understand how citing evidence is a bad thing, that's something that should become automatic once you enter a debate. I am giving you proof to what I am saying and you're ignoring it. And a "shotgun" is probably the dumbest thing you can do, space is massive, good chance it'll miss, if you get those shotgun pellets stuck in an orbit, no telling what a thousand of those things would do over the course of 50 years. There's a reason they don't test stuff like that. And I'm sorry you couldn't understand what I was trying to convey with the sunburn, I thought you would be able to make the connection but I was wrong. Lastly, if a nuclear bomb destroys you in space, why would it not destroy a satellite, especially a satellite not protected by the anti-emp coating that you talked about even though they didn't know the effects of a massive electromagnetic pulse at that time. That technology couldn't have come about at that time. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings but it just seems unacceptable to tolerate someone who ignores facts even though they are a click away.

@mustachemonster1249 жыл бұрын
Why not build the interceptor with extra tiny pieces that decouple that way it increases the probability you will hit the satellite? Sort of like a hole bunch of buckshot when you hit it, but buckshot that hits at orbital velocity. That way when you're less than 100 m off you still have a decent chance of hitting the satellite?
@amperzand91627 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in practice you should probably carry the equivalent of a flak warhead or claymore, use a small explosive charge to throw a large quantity of metal ball bearings or something around, you only need one or two small hits at those velocities to total a satellite.

Why not just launch the buster straight up and have the satellite smash into it at orbital speed? The timing would have to be *perfect*, obviously, but our rocket scientists are pretty good at rocket science. The buster wouldn't need more than three or four km/s of deltaV to climb up to the satellite's altitude, meaning it could use only a single stage. Give it some reaction control and a cheap computer to correct for aerodynamic problems and you've got yourself a pretty simple surface-to-space missile. If it misses, it should aim for somewhere unpopulated. Re-entry heating will *not* destroy the missile as it returns to the surface.
@andytroo9 жыл бұрын
***** just use a bucket of sand :p
@General12th9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Hill Indeed. Collisions at those speeds release way more energy than most chemical reactions. So there would be no need to carry a warhead; the rocket frame itself will do all the necessary damage.
@petersmythe64629 жыл бұрын
***** Well, furthermore, you need not be a rocket-scientist. Just go up 20 seconds early and then adjust. surely, when your payload is tiny and the payoff is so significant from a millitary perspective, you can spare the 200 m/s of DV.

Scott, maybe you already know it, but based on your description you should totally try Maxis SimLife. It's a genetic simulator (kind of), but it's really old (1992 vintage) and clunky unfortunately. It would be great to have a modern version of it!

Scott Manley, I'm not sure that a game exists in the manner you speak of yet, but I like what you're hinting at. Spore almost comes to mind, except that its evolutionary simulation strangely has elements of creationism (e.g., being able to change your body plan when you "evolve"). Your idea sounds incredibly fun, however, and I don't imagine it would be terribly difficult to write a basic simulation along this vein, as evolutionary algorithms are incredibly straightforward. Turning it into a fun game might be a bit of a challenge, but I like the way you think, sir.

I do want to come back to it, however (with appropriate credit to Scott for the idea), as I already have an idea of how I would implement this idea.

The scary thing is that this is possible with a truly minuscule launch vehicle. Especially if it can be launched from a balloon or the top of a tall mountain, a single-stage human-portable SRB may provide sufficient velocity for an object massing in at under a kg to expend its remaining fuel hovering to match the target position. Even if the target could dodge, it would be devastating. Particularly bad is that even a 1 kg cubesat-style vehicle could pulverize a satellite or seriously damage a space station, seeing as anything in orbit deals 7 times its weight in TNT of damage, and this would be a direct impact. Consider that an AIM-9X air-to-air missile has a payload of under 10 kg, and that some variants have been tried, with positive results, with a directional charge of barely over 4 kg. A direct-hit kinetic would be considerably more destructive than a blast wave, even an annularly confined one, and unprotected spacecraft are probably more fragile than aircraft (although unlike aircraft, they can't be "shot down" per se, and are not subject to aerodynamic stresses).

You might want to take a look at _Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution_, www.speciesgame.com/. It features variation, mutation and natural selection as described by Mendelian genetics and Darwinian Evolutionary Theory. The _Time Control_ mod would have been useful in this situation. This because CE does not actually decrease the time step interval but rather slow everything down. Simplified, it created a hook which will then start a very high priority thread in the game which will increase time counters.
