Kerbal Space Program 0.18.2 includes a new planet, an icy world on the edge of the kerbol system, so here's a mission to this tiny world using a 2 part ship assembled in orbit around Kerbin.

Get Kerbal Alarm Clock, it shows you and makes "alarms" (basically stops time warp) for things like launch windows, which are times where you launch to get on an SOI change from Kerbin to another body. Sorry if I'm incorrect, though.

Professor Gutnacht Yes, but in KSP, they only have that small bit of cockpit room. How the devil would you work out in that? You can't enter the fuel tanks and stretch your legs in there, you have to work out while your still sitting. That would really suck in my opinion. But hey, your the first people on Minmus so it's all worth it!
@scottmanley
@scottmanley 11 жыл бұрын
if you only want to escape Kernin orbit then it saves a small amount of fuel. If you want to transfer to almost any other planet then you might be wasting fuel because when you're low down in Kerbin's gravity well you get more energy from the same amount of fuel due to the Oberth effect, so, it is frequently more efficient to do your transfer burn without using the Mun.

Click on your Space hanger; load the Orbiter. Then click Launch. To get into oribit simply do as follows: Launch, at 2000 Meters angle 'slightly', at 6000 Meters angle a bit more, and at 15 tilt it even more over (30* at most), Then 19-21km tilt it at 45* angle. Once you reach 36km make sure that the yellow point (this represents the spacecraft's carried momentum) is in line or just above the point where the blue and orange meet. This should get you into Orbit at least.

I lost my kerbal when i tried to reach the outer planets. He is now on a LONG elliptical orbit extending outside of the solar system, and a 70 year orbit with the sun. It is also 45 degrees off from the orbital plane of the planets. He also has no fuel at all. Yeah... poor guy is lost forever. I got low on fuel and tried to salvage it, so I tried a slingshot maneuver to get home, and I MIGHT have walked away from the pc and forgot to return... and caused that to happen.

theres 3 types of landings, first, the escape velocity "landing". you get so close to the surface its like skimming on the water but then it just goes away, second, the fast landing. you get to the point where your going so fast you cant decelerate but then you just crash into the surface at hypersonic speeds, third, the 2easy landing. your relative velocity is about a hundred meters per second and then you realize your burn is only 6 meters per second. you do that, go to the surface, accelerate your craft at 1% thrust because only 5% overshoots it. and then you land at only 2 meters per second.

***** How to build a Mun rocket: Start small, use a lander can, an FL400 fuel tank, an LV909, some solar panels/batteries, and some micro or medium landing legs. I just tried going to that planet for the first time. Hadn't touched the game in months, and thought "Screw, lets just build a big ass rocket, and get out there". My planning was piss poor at best. Got out near Duna and realized I screwed everything up, and didn't have fuel to get out where i wanted to be. So I went to Duna for the first time instead. In the end, Jeb is stranded on Duna with no ship to get back home. On my day off I will build a proper ship to get to Duna, pick up Jeb, get out to Eeloo, land, plant flag, and return everyone to Kerbin.

Bill Nutt yeh, I went to minmus first. Thanks to Scott's tutorial!! I actually used the exact same rocket to get to the mun and back as well, it works but it's a lot more effort and required more quicksaves.

man, that was an awesome display. I just bought the game out of curiosity, and you should believe the whacky hijinx I subjected the Kerbals to. I know didly squat in space travel, and I certainly didn't expect this game to be such a decent simulator. Kudos to you for your expertise, and the dev team who blew my mind. XD

what does that have to do with anything? more over it wasn't nasa that made that determination but rather the scientific community had a consensus based on other data regarding the recent discovery of larger planetoid bodies in our solar system. knowledge is your friend.

Juno Berries does Pluto have gravity?
@ferret1337
@ferret1337 8 жыл бұрын
well here is a hint. it has a moon (Charon) for the record yes absolutely it has gravity as do all objects. gravity is measured by mass = pi / radius cubed. the greater the mass the greater the gravity. but you being connected to the interwebs ought to see for yourself. it's all there with accreditation to boot. and well the truth is all Trans Kuiper Belt objects are called now plutoids so in a way pluto has become greater than previously. I could indeed throw the book at you including citations but you need not go further than wikipedia. nullius in verba (see for yourself "or take no one's word for it" as per old latin used by the royal society)

I have finally understood the physics behind this space simulation video game thanks to Scott Manley for his extensive knowledge. There really is not any more reasons to keep watching more but I admire all of the random, exciting facts that he instills during each video about space travel and really just flight in general. Love it man, so awesome.

KSP has a learning curve, but you figure it out! For a good long time I couldn't reliably get a ship into a nice orbit or land on the mun, but if you keep watching videos and trying things, you figure out what works and what doesn't. Just today I managed to get Jeb and Bill to Eeloo and back. It only takes practice.
@benner2000

According to most, Minmus is actually easier to land on than the Mun. However, as I approached Minmus, my projected trajectory started to blink wildly and I couldn't make any more maneuvers, so I went for the Mun instead and it wasn't very difficult at all. I docked a craft to an orbiting station prior and that was worlds more difficult.

Agreed, and if you are using so many that they overheat and explode before burning out, just slap some fins on the outside; they seem to act as a heatsink.

i found a sure fire way to rendezvous is that you park your ship close to your target. like you ship is at 95km while your station is at 100km and the closest approach will probably change so slow in each orbital period that sooner or later you'll get an approach with less than 10km separation and starting from there you burn retrograde relative to the target to kill the relative velocity and then burn towards your target and sooner or later the two will meet.

That is why I always test my new ships. For instance, landers, I usually do 1-5 tests with it by going into a steady orbit around Kerbin and then testing every functionality of the ship. I first check my gears, make sure the legs work for one, then make sure they are long enough. then I check solar panels, lights, and then EVA one Kerbal. If everything went well, I go back to Kerbin, testing every stage on the way there, and then using my parachute. If I messed up, I fix it and try again, lol.
