Kern River, Merle Haggard's Old House, Orchard and Powerhouse

The 1908 powerhouse here was added onto in the 90s with a second unit downstream that's fed via an above-ground water channel.
When the powerhouse is not. in use, they divert the water out on the side of the mouth of the canyon. It makes for a spectacular waterfall.
Merle's old house can be seen along with his old citrus orchard.
Most did not know he loved to fish the Kern. Many nights after performing in town, he'd head up the river for night fishing. In the song "Kern River" the 'her' he lost was a dog btw, not a lady.
