No blade is perfect but this thing has been proving to be a powerhouse in a relatively small package. I think I paid $46 for mine and I’m happy. I have a lot of choppers and machetes and this is top three. The old Ontario 18” GI machete will always be my #1. #2 is probably the Tramontina bolo because it’s so cheap but punches above its weight and you can swing it all day without getting too tired. There are a lot of good machetes/choppers and a lot of badly designed ones. I’m not overly concerned about blade steel as long as it has spring and doesn’t chip or break. Soft and springy is better than hard and brittle. I’m not a huge Kershaw fan but they designed a great blade and hats off to them. The geometry is perfect for its size. With choppers and machetes that are really intended to do work, it’s more about efficiency and being able to make effective cuts with the minimum effort. Anyone can design a 4lb thick blade that will chop like an axe but are you going to be able to swing it very long ? And can you swing it with enough speed to cut grass? Nope. The ideal chopper/machete can cut grass and then chop down a small tree equally well. Only a few can do that. The Ontario 18” is probably the best one and done machete because it can really do it all and hold up to hard use. I’ve had mine for 38 years. I’ve used it heavily and it still looks like a machete. It’s got a lot of wear but it still works and I still use it. Lately I have been preferring slightly lighter machetes like the Tramontina bolo and 18” traditional because they are a bit easier to swing but if I need to chop larger saplings or branches, the Ontario is a little better. I use the Kershaw in places where I can’t swing a longer blade and it still preforms well.

I am beyond surprised that the steel managed to stay (relatively) whole during this entire ordeal, as well as shrug off a 9mm round. I have a kershaw camp 14 and this video gave me a lot of insight into it's strengths and weaknesses. Thanks!

I find it funny how many “experts” comment about things that they don’t own and have never used. I have become unbiased with respect to machetes/coppers and let them prove themselves by how they preform with no regard to price, blade steel, company or country of origin. Some work well and some don’t. Price is the least important factor because many of my more expensive blades were too heavy or clumsy to preform well. It’s hard to charge $300 for a piece of 1/8” flat stock spring steel and that’s normally better for a machete than a 1/4” thick super steel anyways. Sometimes you can’t improve on a design and that’s ok.

I owned this for at least 6 years, maybe longer. I beat the hell out of it. Done everything with this thing and all you have to do is re-sharpn it once in a while . It's a fantastic buy, quite honestly. This is a rather rediculous video. It holds up way better than expected when u don't shoot it w bullets. Couple of things, use heat gun and clamps to reshape the sheath so it doesn't rattle. Also, ad some material to the upper inside and top to silence the draw of the blade if needed. Easy to color both sheath and blade. Attaching to your leg in drop formation helps if the sheath is reshaped to fit snug. I would recommend this reshaping. Eventually that snap wares alittle and the friction will be needed to keep well placed in sheath. Wonderful tool. For the money, I can't say enough.

hey Joe thank you for all your tests and I hope you will continue 👍 It could be even more interesting if you added to your tests to cut screws or resistant nails and that you pass the test identical to all the knives by increasing as the tests start with light tests until more hardcore, like eg. 1 tip tests with penetration of the car and on the stone. 2 blade penetration tests in the wood and or small work. 3 crowbar flexibility tests. 4 blade tests on screws or nails. 5 tests of the blade and the back on the stone and the metal post. 6 the glock. 7 corrosion tests for stainless steel. What do you think??

I think Kershaw got it right. Maybe a little bit too soft but a machete is an impact tool usually for use on soft materials like green wood, bamboo, etc. All these usuable machetes this style are softer on the Rockwell scale so they bend instead of break. Some knife brands have tried to reinvent the machete and made the steel much harder and they do break instead of bend. So here I was hacking away with my 10 euro Tramontina and another guy with his 150 euro Fox machete doing the same thing. Mine is still in use and his had a chip, or rather brake out, the size of a golf ball. Great video again.

So, once again we see Joe testing blades in ways that 99% of us will never encounter in actual use. And that most blades, of any steel, or from any maker, will serve well enough for most people, irrespective of cost. But Joe has created his own unique testing process. Not scientific, but still challenging and, most importantly, entertaining. From this test, we also learned that a 5.56 round is much superior to a 9mm if you want to pass through steel. May I suggest that Joe test blades against a 50 cal round too. Not very useful, but it could be very entertaining. Thanks Joe.

This was a good example of how there multiple dimensions to toughness. It was simply way too soft to snap which tends to be (accurately, but not all-encompassingly) seen as toughness, but the edge chipped away pretty easily on shocks. I'd be curious to see more tools in ~mid 30s rockwell Joe tested to compare. I think this is the first sub-50 rockwell subject of Joe's abuse aside from maybe some parts of some differential heat treated things. I expected more of the handle. The types of zytel that should be used for this application are tanks, even if it all feels like lego. Maybe some parts were just too thin. Looks like a place where they cut corners, be it material or geometry.
