I began learning the violin a couple of years ago, after years of playing cello. I was late starting that instrument at 31, however I had the drive and the ambition to do it, and thanks to great teachers was able to accomplish some form of musicianship with regards to the cello, and the baroque repertoire, which interests me most. With the Pandemic, and having to cease lessons, despite trying the online lessons, it became frustrating to say the least, as having a teacher right there in the room is essential to me. Recently, I decided to, with the basic understanding that I have of the violin, and having been a string player, decided to go to these etudes. Your series on the Art of Etude is what inspires me to continue to work at this, until such time that I am able to return to in person learning. So Thankyou Kerson for your enlightening way of how to approach these. I am now 71 years young, and having a great time with this lovely instrument. ( I played it in high school for a year or so, and didn't see the value of it then ). I do now.

I’ve been doing bow work slowly, and find it very grounding to my practice warmup. My intonation seems to improve with this, too.

More breakdown such as the book has different bowing and rhythms perhaps demonstrate some of those so we could see it in action-Thanks

Love your playing and ideas.BTW this is not one of the simplest etudes. You are right, it is primarily about consistent quality of sound. But, It is extremely hard to play perfectly in tune and those bowings are a lifetimes work to perfect. Yankelevitch invariably had his advanced solo students work on it. Note you can also play it in second and fourth position to really master those. Simon Fischer recommends stopping in the middle of practice and working on some bowings on this etude for a few minutes. After that, go back to the concerto or whatever and notice the improvement.

It's relatively simple in scope which is precisely why it's so versatile and why one can spend their entire career playing it

Dear Kerson, could you pls do a tutorial on J. Dont's Etude no. 2 in A minor, op. 35? A fascinating piece but none has done any tutorial on it before. Many thanks in advance!

Are you using the franco belgian bow grip?

Yes, I would say the base of my bow grip is Franco-Belgian.

KersonLeong possible to do a video on how to bow smoothly? My bow changes tend to sound crunchy especially for fast notes.

Sure, I'll note it down for a future video.
