First of all those guys were fighting for their lives, secondly, there was a lot more politics at hand than simply British empire taking over Afghanistan land. Thirdly, do you not feel sympathy for both sides in a battle (for example I don't feel sympathy for the SS waffen during Nazi Germany, but the Wehrmacht and the luftwaffe were doing as they were told).

Those sikh soldiers were fighting to safe their homeland (undivided Punjab) and their own people. Because in history there were many invasions and frequent raids from North West frontier into punjab. Those raiders murdered, pillaged, raped, looted villages and towns of punjab and took away women and children as slaves. In 18th century Ahmad Shah Abdali invaded India and Punjab several times, he made Punjab a heap of dead bodies and burnt villages. Later to stop that permanently, Maharaja Ranjit Singh invaded and conquered North West frontier in early 19th century and closed down the notorious Khyber pass, the route of most invasions into Punjab and India. It was like saving the fort walls so that the enemy could not pour inside.

Those comments in favour of the 22 soldiers should know that these were only British soldiers of indian origin . British government hired it's soldiers from all ethnicities of India and trained them to such a level that they should only follow master's order, these British indian soldiers followed the orders of British officers and killed thousands of their fellow indians in1857 , they followed the orders at Jaliawala bagh massacre and killed children, woman and elderly people, Kindly don't attach these people to specific ethnicity, these and many others were on the British payroll...
