As a Kesha Stan from the first song back in 2009 I gotta say that Gag Order is by far her best album yet. As you said, this album somehow incorporates her quirkiness from her first two records with the artsiness of her two prior works & combines them in such a delicate way. Each track reveals how Kesha somehow found her light and spirituality throughout her not being able to live freely and be free. One of the albums of the year for me!

Hard disagree with “Too Far Gone” and “Peace and Quiet.” I think “Too Far Gone is a understated and heart wrenching, but requires multiple listens for the impact to hit. “Peace and Quiet is surprisingly tongue in cheek track that totally gives me Daft Punk “Discovery” era vibes. “Happy,” much like “Too Far Gone,” is again, shockingly minimal for its message and also takes multiple listens. It’s a poignant and self-aware commentary regarding her past and hopes for the future. I think the album’s a modern masterpiece. Also, this is her LAST contracted album with Kemosabe, making it a “Dear John” letter of sorts. The irony is on literal display in her last lyric of “Fine Line.” She sings, “But hey, look at all the money we made off me,” referring to her body of work with the label, but being sung on a non-commercially viable album knowing Dr Luke will still receive royalties, even if she wasn’t required to work with him. I can’t wait to hear what she does next, finally under the banner of freedom.

This is definitely her best, most cohesive album that incorporates Kesha’s various influences, quirks and styles in a fresh, streamlined and meaningful way. It also doesn’t overstay its welcome. I feel like she was trying to do something like this with High Road but frankly that album was just a total mess. I’m so glad for her! If I’m not mistaken, I believe this album finally completes her contract with RCA/Kemosabe? Hence the rather aggressive title, cover art and lyrics. I’ll be very interested and excited to see where she goes from here.

So happy to see Kesha get two positive reviews in a row from such a huge critic. There’s a large age gap between me and my sister so in the early 2010s she was a huge Kesha fan and I was by proxy, having been given her old iPod as a hand-me-down. Never got into her music because of her original hit and she's got the on song with "your love is my drug..." I think is in the chorus that's a jarring earworm, but paying some attention to the nonsense she's had to deal with over these past few years and hearing Anthony explain how the project plays out in the beginning has made me want to actually get into her music. It's unfortunate that this is the album that gets me to start listening to her music. Other than my terrible wordings...... I'm incredibly happy for her progression as an artist and hope she continues to do so.

This album is a full masterpiece. The amount of vulnerability and the deep lyrics combining anxiety, religion, loosing your sense of self, anxiety, fear, and finishing with her own definition of what happiness means for her, is what art is. I don't think it is relevant to try to put a genre on this album regarding hyperpop for example as it is, indeed, not a commercial album. It is just art at its finest, a pure expression of emotions and deep feelings. I think Kesha has reminded us what music and art is about after all

It's almost never that I disagree so much with Anthony but Peace & Quiet is one of my favourite tracks, I can understand how it could come across as obnoxious but given my interpretation I don't think it is... To me it seems like her almost making the statement that her emotions are too far from tame for him to even have the chance to get off easy, I think the lyrics about someone being in love with her are about him + where she says stuff like 'get into it or get the f out' I see it as her hinting towards his greed and implying that his two options are to surrender now or dig his hole even deeper. Another interpretation (which would explain the very Ke$ha sounding autotune) could be her hinting at being given the idea that her only chance to get into the music industry was to become who she did and "get into it" or "get out". I do get the autotune part but I feel like the song really sells it, especially towards the end.
@courtneybrock1
@courtneybrock1 Жыл бұрын
For this album, there needs to be a distinction between the use of “vocoders” and “autotune.” One of the highlights from her interviews about working with Rick Rubin was his refusal to let her use autotune in the traditional sense, saying her raw vocals were exactly what the album needed. However, the album makes heavy use of electronic vocal processing for artistic effect like you’d find in many indie & EDM albums. Peace and Quiet is an excellent example of that.

Honestly very glad to see a very solid rating for this album. This is one of the most hard hitting releases this year so far for me, and I definitely consider this her best work. The way she just manages to be so open and honest about her trauma resonated with me, as I found myself in a lot of similar situations in my own history, and the melodies and instrumentals are consistently some of the most intricate and beautiful ones in recent memory from pop music. Definitely a major milestone in her career as an artist and even if she doesn’t continue down this path of exposing her trauma to the world through her music, I hope she’s able to heal and make peace with a lot of the turmoil that she’s been forced to go through

While there’s a portion of the Gag Order I don’t love, I think this is her best work in a long time. High Road and Rainbow, apart from a few songs here and there, often have a very amateur sounding production to my (amateur) ears. This album sounds cohesive and professionally made. I loved Eat the Acid right away. I really like Happy’s outro. Seems like Kesha is at a place professionally where she’s not getting much attention, but creatively she’s flourishing. I agree with everything being said, but I think that the second half of the album being so mellow and not as exciting or innovative was intentional. It’s just an interesting thought to explore since it talks more about self-love issues and freedom and finding yourself despite what others have done to you, or can you even find your old self (especially after abuse). Music fits the theme even if the lyrics don’t hit as hard or as cleaver.

It's definitely the most out-there project from Kesha and I think that works really well in her favor. The woman can write and sing hooks like nobody's business, even when she's aiming for weird psychedelic sounds and eerie chord progressions. A few of the songs do fall flat but I think that's to be expected when there are so many ballads of varying intensity on one album. Personally I love "Peace and Quiet" for being brash and one of the more uptempo songs on the album. It's easier to listen to casually.

This video started playing on mute and for a good 20 seconds I legit thought this was a joke video where the whole review is completely silent because the album is called 'Gag Order' 💀💀💀

Love this review! Curious as to why “All I Need Is You” wasn’t mentioned, in my opinion it’s the strongest track on the album, absolutely stunning.

Cool review, Anthony. I just have to say that wow, kesha has really evolved as an artist and has taken a total 180 from what she sounded like when she stepped out onto the scene. Some of it works for me, and some of it doesn't, but this was a good listen, and I could say a 6/10 listening experience imo. The big single eat the acid and the final song on the album hate me harder are my 2 favorite tracks.

The debut album Drive Home by Portraits of Tracy is blowing my mind with its progressive R&B sounds. They’re 18 years old and from Baton Rogue. I think you’ll really be intrigued by this one.

This album gave a semi closeness to Petals for Armour (Hayley williams), which is my fave album ever, and thus album was so raw and different and I loved it so much, I listened to it twice in a row it was so good

Its always the song that I fucking love and need to listen to on repeat for 3 hours is the one that Anthony doesn't like lmao. Peace & Quiet rocks. My interpretation is it's saying to be able to speak her truth and shit she has to be loud about it

what about the best song ALL I NEED IS YOU? ram dass interlude & only love reprise? 😑😑😑 also Kesha ACTUALLY having a GREAT voice unlike most of the hyperpop scene, those layers are beautiful you're such a hater. SIDE EYE. 10/10 for me, thank you for acknowledge her situation at the beginning, pointing that out It's so important.
