Kestrel 5700 Elite w/ LiNK: Bluetooth Capabilities Review & Demo

This video is the fifth in a series covering Kestrel's new premier weather meter, the 5700 Elite w/ LiNK. Remote wind reading via Bluetooth is shown, as well as wireless firmware updating and gun profile loading. With the Kestrel 5700 Elite Weather Meter in a Kestrel Vane Mount, Sam demonstrates how to pair up the solver to an iPhone 6 and observe live wind and environmental conditions from a remote firing position.
Also shown is using Kestrel's LiNK app to check live environmental readings and update firmware on the Kestrel 5700. After the firmware update, Sam shows how to upload gun profiles from the iPhone 6 to the Kestrel 5700.

Great series of Kestrel videos. My 5700 came today. First thing after battery was compass calibration. I was worried after watching your vids, but it went well the first attempt. Been playing with the ballistic app on my Android. Wish Lintz would hurry and test the new Hornady 6.5mm ELDs. Keep up the Kestrel videos, they're very helpful

Thank you for another great video. FYI rumor has it that those 6 screw Nightforce scope rings need to be torques to your pica tinny an extra 10 pounds because the extra width disperses the pressure more. that's what I heard. for what it's worth.

It's a really good video. I have a question. I did a target location search. It was 7 o'clock. However, when you connect only Bluetooth, the target direction changes to 12 o'clock. The screen changes to 12 o'clock. Do you know why?

How is it advantageous to take your 1300yd shot when the wind dies down at 0yd line? Seems like the wind will be completely different down range.

Hi Sam. Why do my direction of fire change, when i am shooting in the same direction on diffrent days. It seems to me that I have to calibrate each time when take n direction of fire when i have shut the unit down.On the same day its fine but the following day or fewd days its way of, is this normal?

Here in Switzerland, I am seeing really old hunters with older rifles and basic scopes, taking 400-500m clean shots. Sure, in the Swiss army, every single soldier (Army mandatory) incl. cooks are highly trained marksmen (trained for prone position headshots at still target at 300 m with SIG551 without any type of modification), but nobody uses wind meters that hunt here (in the mountains). What distance shots do you take over there in the US with those advanced rifles and equipment? Also, the longer the shots in mountain regions the more inaccurate the wind is (Alpine Grenadiers confirmed). I assume you take around 700m shots with it in no mountain conditions for a clean shot?

This is an older video, but I may be looking at getting a kestrel soon. I need it for wind management and environmental reading when doing my spray work (herbicide applications), and figure if im going to get one, I might as well get one for use when shooting as well. Would u still recommend the 5700 elite as the "go to" unit for this type of use (long range shooting)?

If you hook this thing up to sig bdx scope and bdx rangefinder it give you ballistic solutions real time in the scope.

Hello again. Quick question for you: On the Kestrel app there is a section Called SCOPE DATA where you choose minutes or MILS. Why is there a window to input a number? Thank you

That's if you want to use "clicks" instead of a MIL or MOA value. If you wanted to use clicks instead of true MOA, for instance, you would enter "4" in that box to indicate 4 clicks per TMOA. Then if you wanted to use clicks, and the correction was 7 MOA up, it would tell you to dial 28 "clicks". I would not recommend that! You can just ignore those boxes if you don't have the Kestrel set to give you clicks. TMOA or MIL is what I recommend.

^This!^ Counting clicks is one of those 'I like that idea' things, until the turrets are like ice cubes and your fingers aren't much warmer. Heated turrets (or heated anything) would be great though. >;)

When they do a firmware update, what all do you gain by going from the version your using to the upgrade? Seems like a pain in the r ass...How often are the updates? Great information. I still am using the obsolete 4500 with AB without Bluetooth capabilities ....trying to decide if its worth the money to me to upgrade to the 5700.

It's not really a big deal to do, especially a LiNK model. I don't think it's necessarily upgrading. More like patching up small bugs in the system. I've done mine twice since January. I never had a problem and didn't check to see what it was fixing. Kestrel Ballistics has it on their website (what the update is doing), as well as an email list you can get on to notify you when an update is coming.

Yes, it's there to represent how many clicks per unit of measurement. It probably said 10 because of the MIL preset. It doesn't matter what's in that box if you don't use clicks as a correction value.

Can you just enter the angle adjusted distance directly from the rangefinder and get good results, using the altitude, temp , pressure from the Kestel? Thanks, Great videos!

gabell727 You might be ok if the distance is pretty short. I wouldn’t do it that way, though. If I have time to enter data into my Kestrel, I’ll use LOS distance and input the angle if needed.

If it's down hill shooting just aim low if up hill aim hi let it fly the steeper the angel the more hier or lower

Kestrel tells you what the wind is at its position only. .....not where the bullet has to fly through. Better learn to read the wind. Wind reading is an art that separates the shooters from the trigger slappers.

When are we going to FINALLY get a high technology device to shoot an elk at 8.5 miles so we can send in our remote flying field dressing deer and moose carrying device and bring it back to us hunters, fully cut and wrapped and send our fresh shot deer have land at our doorstep for the " ole lady " to put in the refrigerator down stairs in the basement ?? WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET THIS. IT IS SO FREAKING DIFFICULT FOR SOME OF US TO LIFT OUR FEET LET ALONE GO OUT IN THE WILD ALONE.
