I loved watching this. I'm one of the people who was standing on the riverfront in Hannibal watching this beautiful train come in. I wish they'd do it annually. It'd be great during Tom Sawyer Days over July 4th.

A nice step back in history. Kudos to the team of volunteers that preserve this machine from the past. Thanks for posting.

Around the time I was born (1938) dad worked on the Burlington as a fireman. He often made this run from St Louis to Hannibal, shoveling coal by hand. I rode behind steamers often asa kid and young adult, as recently as 1959. Later on excursions.

It's interesting to think there actually was a serious attempt to revive the 1522 in the late 2000's by the same volunteers who ran her before. Sadly that didn't work out.

Sadly, those guys featured in the video are no longer with us. The guys who passed on are Jack Nanson, Jim Merkle, and Frank Willis. Except for Wellie Lazier who enjoys railroading and automobiles. He almost reminds me of a younger version of movie and voice actor Mark Hamill a little. If you go to the St. Louis Chapter of the NRHS website, you’ll find that the created this site dedicated to the past members I had talked about. They’ll tell you the story about the crew, their experiences, and also fond memories of the excursion runs they had succeeded.

Hey man...we're not all dead. I'm the guy second from the left in the black and white crew photo at the beginning of the rebuild. Admittedly 67 years old now but I'm still breathing. There are a few of us still hanging around.

Literally the entire country in the last year has returned a couple dozen steam locos back into excursion service. And now with the heritage UP sell off of challenger ,5511 , 6936, and more set to all be returned to services we should hope and pray we get the super consist that the lords never gotten. 4014, 3985, and 3936 for auxiliary power as a triple header for the Union Pacific country tour

I understand that, I'm not trying to fight either, you and I believe different things, I love steam, you see them as dollar signs, I'll never try to change your views, if that's what you see that's what you see, but now I must let my friend George say something, "have a crappy day" ;)

If anything doomed the 1522 it was NS cancelling their steam program in 1994. If it had survived I think 1522 could've joined the roster and NS could've helped with the rising insurance costs.

Geeze dickweed, we DO NOT need commetns like that. The best thing to happen is for it to return to operation. BTW, that may not happen for many years to come. Worst off, it may never return to the rails where it belongs.

Right you are it is in a museum, but the cost of maintaining the display and shelter are mounting and the old junker is in jeopardy of being scrapped out. It is just too expensive to keep any longer. I have my torch ready to cut this pot metal apart!

We agree, we don't agree! Money matters! Thank your friend George for the NICE WISH! I APPRECIATE IT! Junk all the remaining steam locomotives! Cut them apart & melt them down! Or let the financially desperate people obtain the parts & sell them on the black market for lucrative sums of CASH! ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTIONS EVER ASKED ABOUT WHERE THE PARTS CAME FROM OR HOW THEY WERE ACQUIRED! For those people, it is like finding a winning lottery ticket in the street! Junk the steam locomotives!

Cockroach ah, I sense pride from that. Money can only take you so far. Why criticize and tear down people so much with a foolish tradition, when you could find something better to do, such as doing distance bike rides.

As I see it, I am entitled & even encouraged to make a comment. The steam locomotives will continue to have their parts removed & sold on the black market for CASH with ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTIONS EVER ASKED ABOUT WHERE THE PARTS CAME FROM OR HOW THEY WERE ACQUIRED! Cut apart & melt steam locomotives!

Maybe we do need people to speak up about cutting up these old junkers. They are all junk iron and should be cut up and melted. They will never return to the rails! They will be sent to the junk yard for cutting up and melting down. That is a good thing!
