Dr. Jordan B. Peterson speaks with author, researcher, and psychiatrist Chris Palmer. They discuss how metabolic and mental disorders might be linked, depression's purpose as a biological corrective measure, how metabolism might directly tie to mental disorders, the use of fasting for medical and spiritual breakthroughs, and the research showing we have vastly undervalued the mitochondria when it comes to mental wellness.
Chris Palmer, MD is a medical doctor and psychiatric researcher working in the areas of addiction and sleep. He is also the author of 2022’s “Brain Energy,” in which he argues that mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain.

I’m diagnosed with schizophrenia. I’ve followed Dr. Palmer’s work for quite a while. I was exposed to keto/carnivore through him and Dr. Peterson’s family. My delusions and anxiety have practically disappeared on this diet and they come back as soon as I eat carbs. I’ve been on about 20 different psychotropic medications and none of them have treated me as well as this diet has. If you’re struggling with mental illness, please give this a try!

Look into anthelmintics for treatment of schizophrenia. This diet is not good in the long run (keto of any kind), and was never intended for long-term adherence. I urge you and anyone to look into the history of Robert Atkins.

Please share more, my son is schizophrenic. We found out a year ago. It's sooooo challenging 🥺. He just had his first "episode" since his diagnosis and subsequent treatment. How did you get to the point where you had the drive and willingness to commit to this lifestyle. I share all this information with him but it seems he doesn't have the will to even try. I'm exasperated and our family is struggling. God bless

After almost 4 years on a modified keto diet with intermittent fasting, I've gone from a size 26 to 18. My goal is 16. I no longer experience what I described as low-level depression. My sleep is well-regulated. I no longer need antiacids. I've had various skin growths disappear as well as varicose veins. When I was 24, I fell down some stairs while wearing sandals that had straps around my ankles. The strap on my right ankle took a big gouge out of the ankle. It healed but left behind ugly-looking veins. Those veins are almost gone. When I was 13 I ran over my left big toe with a sweeper and lost the nail. The nail grew back but it would look dark/yellow at various times. Now the nail is clear. I feel better at 64 than I did at any time since my 20s. I take no prescribed medication. I exercise daily, walking or hand weights or core exercises. I'm never going back. Every thing said in this podcast I've experienced. I'm a believer👍

@@UrNotThatGuyPal I didn't increase my intake of meat, in fact I eliminated all processed meat. There are some fruits and vegetables that keto recommends be eliminated but I think are necessary for good health. I have not increased my fat intake, for example cheese, sour cream, etc. I still include those things at the same amounts I did before. I don't eat any pasta, white potatoes or rice. The only bread I eat is bread that includes no white flour, any form of sugar, or additives. The only treat I allow myself is occasional chocolate dessert or candy. It's what works for me. Congratulations. I'm so happy you found something that works. I'm younger than you are but in a similar predicament and needed incentive to do what I knew would help, but have been depressed and frustrated enough to allow that to keep me from putting my life back on track. The comment above about short interval high intensity training, both in cardio and strength training, has a beneficial effect on mitochondria, and blood flow. Which obviously helps the brain. Most of your exercises should be lower intensity, but it is crucial to get hormetic stress, from heat, from cold, and from exercise. It provokes the body to rebuild, and tune up the systems within the body. Particularly the energy production capacity.

I had babies young back to back with no issues. I had 3 kids before 25. I was so healthy, I worked out a bunch and ate very clean. All 3 kids were healthy and I had no issues. Then after 24 I started eating like absolute s***. A few personal issues and honestly pure laziness... Starbucks, Taco Bell, ChickFilA, Cheese, I started eating all the things I NEVER ate before. I was depressed and miserable. I gained 40lbs and insomnia, lost my gallbladder, heartburn etc... I was so unhealthy. Well at 27 then we wanted another child. All of a sudden I was experiencing "secondary infertility" I couldn't get pregnant anymore. So I moved on. 7 years later I was so sick and fat and tired. I went on the carnivore diet. I Felt amazing, lost 12 lbs and out of the blue I GOT PREGNANT. Baby stuck. I stayed on carnivore (but introduced whole fruits and folic acid supplement) all 9 months. I ate tons of steak, Celtics salt, salmon, chicken etc and my baby was born 9lbs and insanely healthy. I will never go back. I'm convinced carnivore helped me get preggo. I also produced breastmilk for my baby for the first time. I never produced for my first 3 kids. My Dr couldn't explain it. 🥩

Two years ago he was about to have a serious operation to remove the entire colon. The inflammation could not be controlled. He also started a carnivorous diet. Jesus says, To show mercy to animals, for example, Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) Jesus: to think of compassion for animal neighbors. He also said, To Kill an Ox is to Kill a man. bibiclal/historical evidence jesus was vegetarian but the white europeans didnt have the discipline like the desert fathers in the middle east- so the whites re.wrote bible and said jesus ate fish (he didnt) then they re wrote it again and said he lamb at passover after he was crucified (he never did in the original scrpitures. He stopped the ebonites from sacrificing animals, and you call your selves christians!

What is the difference between a keto diet and the carnivore diet? And what kind of meat can you eat? Besides steak? And as far as fasting is that just with the keto? I’m sorry for the question, but if you could enter any, that would be great. I’m trying so hard to make myself do this. Thank you.

I'm considering my 14-year old autistic son to follow a ketogenic food list after hearing this interview. It seems as far as I could establish that my insulin resistance may have played a role in his autism as I was already struggling with this when I got pregnant with him. I would appreciate it so much if you can have a future podcast focusing on keto and autism, if there are any experts out there that are actually looking at this? @@edennis8578 I don't understand it myself... He has a severe smell aversion to most food so eating has been a real challenge with him for the past 12 years since he presented with symptoms at age 2. He battles to swallow beef after he chews it for 3 minutes but seem to do a bit better with very soft meat. He doesn't consume any fluids except soy formula milk (which the paediatrician recommends he keeps drinking until he eats properly), a little water and (horror of horrors!) coke. He will vomit his whole meal if I push to hard with something he doesn't easily consume. This seems to happen spontaneously, I don't know... One of his most severe autism symptoms is a very poor introception (as part of proprioception). He did however teach himself to read at home during CoVid and has an audiographic memory, so by Grace and Mercy parts of his brain seem to be doing well (LOL).

Carried out in 1974 at the University of Virginia, the research showed that THC and cannabinol (CBN), as well as the THC analog delta-8-THC (the primary form is delta-9), inhibited tumor growth and reduced primary tumor size in mice (Munson et al.). Specifically, THC was associated with dose-dependent reduction of tumor growth, whereas delta-8-THC and CBN reduced primary tumor size. All three cannabinoids increased the average survival time.i was introduce to doctor David who recommended some drugs and thank God I'm back alive...

My psychiatrist is amazed this works and is recommending other patients try this. Had I known this decades ago, my life would have been so much better. I tell you what. I'll never voluntarily come off keto. It takes months of adherence for this to appear, but it does and it's consistent and replicable. Hope this gives others an idea to try. Diet is such a simple way to affect change. Keto was designed to help children with epilepsy. Psychiatric issues are sometimes treated with anti epilepsy drugs. Don't know why I'd never heard of or considered diet changes until I fell into it for another reason.

🐟 30. FOOD & DIET: There are THREE kinds of foods according to the three "modes" explicated in Chapter 18 of this “A Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity”. Foods in the mode of purity promote good physical and mental health. The adage "healthy body, healthy mind" is pertinent to this mode. Such foods include, in approximate order of their importance: fruits (especially if they are tree-ripened), vegetables, nuts, legumes/pulses, grains, roots, flowers, tubers, bulbs, and of course, purified water (or milk, in the case of infants), supplemented with seeds and herbs. To be included in this classification, the food must be LIVING, that is, fresh and raw (or at most, steamed or lightly sautéed, if one is residing in a cold clime). Most animals subsist on living foodstuffs, so to be considered healthy, the food must be both living and natural. As with all herbivorous mammals, humans who consume a pure diet normally experience a bowel movement after each substantial meal. Foods in the mode of passion promote indigestion (or, at least, are more difficult to digest than pure foods) and overly-excite the mind. Such foods are basically the same as above, but with excessive amounts of oil, spices, sweeteners, salt and/or other condiments added. To be included in this category, the VEGETARIAN* foods may be properly cooked, but not overcooked, and mildly to moderately seasoned. Those who consume foods predominately in the mode of passion normally defecate after breaking their fast (i.e. the first meal of the day). Foods in the mode of darkness cannot rightly be called “food” at all, and invariably cause digestive upsets, such as constipation or diarrhoea. Such “offal” is either dry, stale, putrid, rancid, decayed, carcinogenic, overcooked (or even worse, burnt), processed beyond recognition, or the remnants of another’s meal (that is, food that has been leftover by a person who is lower in the hierarchy of society than the person who intends to consume it. For example, it would be offensive for a beggar to offer the remains of his meal to his king, yet the converse would be a rather gracious act of kindness). Again, to be included in this classification, the food is to be of wholly PLANT or fungal origin. Ideally, the bulk (if not ALL) of one's diet should comprise of minimally-processed raw foods, such as tropical fruits or vegetable salads, the latter of which often consists of fruits anyway, since such foods as tomatoes, cucumbers and olives are, in fact, fruits, since they are seed-bearing foods. If one consumes a very high proportion of raw fruits, it is rarely, if ever, necessary to fast. Fasting is beneficial for those who partake in a diet high in processed and cooked dishes. Fruit-juice fasting is possibly the best method of fasting, especially for those living an active lifestyle. Unless one is particularly active, eating more than two meals per day is unnecessary. Ideally, cooked and highly-processed foods should be reserved for the final meal of the day, since the process of digestion itself consumes more energy than any other activity. It is an undeniable scientific fact that humans are a HERBIVOROUS species (more specifically, a predominantly frugivorous, or fruit-eating animal). There is not a single aspect of human psychology or physiology that even suggests that we were designed or evolved to feed on our fellow animals. The primary visual cortex of the brains of hominids has precisely evolved to recognise the colourful fruits that grew in the tropics of the African continent. Only a veritable troglodyte could possibly take delight in the sight and stench of bloody animal carcasses! Practically all cat owners know to feed their pets with animal flesh, as they understand that felines are obligate carnivores, yet they have not the slightest clue that humans are herbivores biologically, and that the consumption of animal products is gradually destroying their health. Animal consumption is lawful only if there is a scarcity of ACTUAL food. However, to be fair, some races have adapted reasonably well to an omnivorous diet due to residing in regions of the earth where edible vegetation has been scarce, for millennia before the twentieth century. But even then, those races have been found to improve their health when their diet had been enriched with vegetation. Humans originated in the wetlands of tropical Africa and our source of food is necessarily to be found in such a climate. We humans must surely be the only species of animal life that migrates away from its food source! Who among you would not prefer tropical fruits over the “food” found in the Arctic Circle? Unnecessarily killing and/or consuming animals is an ABOMINABLE action. It is not natural for humans to hunt animals like sheep, cows, goats, rabbits, chicken, and fish, and gorge on their bloody carcasses. Sheep, rabbits, and cows are food for carnivorous animals such as lions, tigers and wolves, and fish is food for marine and semi-aquatic species. Do humans live in the ocean? Of course not! Then why is it necessary for us to go into the water to find our food? Is that sensible? Not at all, unless, as previously mentioned, one is afflicted with true hunger (and even in the event that one is literally dying of starvation, one ought to, from a moral perspective, as far as practical, eat those animals that are lower in the hierarchy of sentience, such as seafood. Slaughtering a primate is immeasurably more sinful than feeding on crustacean, for instance). Milk is intended solely for consumption by infants of the SAME species. Cow’s milk is for baby cows, not adult humans. The logic is overwhelming, but unfortunately, not all persons are capable of reaching such a base level of logic to understand that it is unnatural for a human to suckle on the teats of a cow or goat. Furthermore, like all unnatural substances, dairy products are harmful to human physiology. Ideally, one should sit in a comfortable position and eat one’s meal with a RELAXED mental disposition. Consuming food in an anxious state of mind may cause digestive upsets. If practical, eating with bare (washed) hands is more conducive to the enjoyment of one’s meal. “And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.’” Genesis 1:29. The Old Testament portion of the “Holy Bible”. “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.” Hippocrates, Father of modern medicine. *The term “Vegetarian” is used LITERALLY here, that is, “one who subsists on vegetation”. One who consumes vegetation and dairy and/or eggs is properly called a “lacto-vegetarian” or a “lacto-ovo vegetarian”, respectively. The term “vegan” is not directly related to diet, but to the philosophy of the avoidance of harming animal life unnecessarily. Animal killing is permissible only in the case of true hunger, self-defence, or in order to eradicate vermin from one's dwelling and work places. Obviously, veganism is to be promoted as the ideal way of life for all humans. N.B. If you are reading this Holy Scripture, it is highly probable that you are familiar with the concept of the “Three Modes of Nature” (“trī-guṇa”, in Sanskrit). If not, it may be prudent to read or re-read Chapter 18 of “FISH” at this point. In any case, those who are, in fact, familiar with the three modes of nature have an extremely flawed understanding of how they apply to food and diet, particularly if they have studied the ancient Indian texts known collectively as “Ayur Veda” (“The Science of Life/Longevity”). Those persons invariably believe that animal products are categorized in the mode of darkness. However, that assumes that animals are actually human food, which they most assuredly are not. The system outlined above is by far the most accurate, logical, and authoritative method of classifying food, and ought to be followed by anyone who is truly desirous of living a wholesome life. Unfortunately, even most vegans seem to lean towards less-than-healthy foods. © 2019-2023 Spiritual Sciences Society.

I was completely zonked out, finding it hard to breathe at night after I took the pills. That stopped after I lowered my dose. I do not come off the drug, but I can significantly lower the dose. After having this happen several times in a row I was able to figure out it was long term lack of carbs on the keto diet that was doing it. I don't necessarily lose a ton of weight, as I intended, but I am super stable. I mentioned it to my psychiatrist who graduated in 1972 (he's been in practice forever) and he'd never heard of diet changes affecting bipolar disorder. I am on seroquel BTW and it has been the greatest medication I've ever taken. I have been on that for twenty years or so. I have a family, I've been married for almost twenty years and my disease has been under control that whole time. Between the drug and my diet I have a normal life. Although, the diet becomes monotonous. But all I have to do is eat carbs and I'm back to needing a higher dose to sleep. I would bet your sons doctor would either tell you that can't work (out of hand) or tell you to try it and see. Most psychiatrists do not have a component of treatment that involves diet so I doubt they'd have a problem with you trying it. For me it just has to be several months on strict keto for this to work. I don't know if it will work for everyone, I just know it does for me.

Carnivores eat raw meat no stomach issues, Humans cant digest meat hence why they cook it and can still get food poisoning. Abstain away from meat and have your wheel of compassion extend to all sentient beings.

Thanks so much to Dr Palmer and Dr Peterson. One of the best podcasts you have ever done. I've had mental health problems from age 18 onwards if not earlier, and was finally diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder aged 43. Some medications worked better than others, but hypomania could still occur occasionally even when taking the prescribed drugs correctly. So I decided to stop taking them (epilim chronosphere, an anti epileptic fit drug, and sertraline as the anti-depressant) and I also try to use creative activity in both music and art as a way of managing the condition. I'm also eating far fewer carbohydrates than was the case for most of my life. I can't manage to eliminate them completely, but may try that eventually. I certainly feel considerably better these days, bad dream and nightmare-free sleep being a big help in this. The fact is bipolar can be managed without medication, but the pharmaceutical industry won't be too happy if everyone starts giving up their psychotropic drugs, just as they won't like physicians such as Dr Thomas Seyfried who put forward diets which can literally starve tumours, reducing them in size and thus prolonging the patient's life. Dr Palmer is clearly at the forefront of all this new thinking on the origins of mental health problems and it was great to hear him talk with such passion and conviction, especially where he mentioned the billionaires' son who was being written off by the psychiatric profession. An outstanding podcast, this one will help millions of people. I shall order Dr Palmer's book soon. Thanks again, gentlemen.

When I lowered the amount of sugar/carbs in my diet my back pain stopped, and have been steadily losing weight on top of that. Another benefit is I'm pretty sure I've stopped snoring and/or having acid reflux as I used to wake up with a sore throat, and that's stopped. Heartburn has also stopped being a problem as well. I can't say much towards any mental benefits as my mental state was improved through vitamin D supplementation. I'm basically pushing my diet more and more closer to carnivore and it has been relatively easy as the sugar cravings have become shorter and easier to ignore.

Unfortunatly do bend most rules on occasional social outings but I can deal with that. Ken Berry, beef, bacon, butter & eggs. I still enjoy onions, garlic, mushrooms & capsicum...

My only mental illness is that I'm still holding out hope that the Canadian government will miraculously change with the next election. Besides that, I went ketovore when I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes in the summer of 2022. Went from an A1C of 13.2 (so high that my hair should have been on fire) to 5.5 within 6 months. I have reversed so many physical ailments and my bloodwork is now stellar. I'm still on a version of a ketogenic diet and this is my way of eating now. I believe that everyone needs to find their own path but if you haven't tried this way of eating and continue to have mental or health issues....what do you have to lose??? Speaking of losing, I also lost about 110 lbs (50 kg) in about 9 months on top of everything else!

Jordan. You just made me worried. You described depression as "an excess of pain" at about 10 minutes in. That really describes how I feel. Am I depressed? Sure, I am a bit low at times, but honestly, I would swear pain hurts me more. I tend to be a trooper about it, but, lets be real... Pain is literally my biggest enemy. It sometimes feels unbearable. Is this depression? OMG. Now I have to examine what I am up to. I think I might be coping with a problem... Wow, Doctor, your podcast gets me. Nail on the head. Wow. 😮

I have had episodes of severe depression/anxiety and in my experience, the physical pain is there. I described it as a vibrating sensation in my body. My forearms still get sore when anxiety and depression act up. If you are experiencing severe depression, you will have absolutely zero interest in anything. It's very confusing because you may not have anything to be depressed about. I always described it to my wife this way. It's like having the physical sensation that your leg is on fire but you can look down and see it isn't on fire. The pain is still very real though. I hope you can find help.

I was so depressed when I first got sober that I checked myself into the hospital psych ward. I stayed for 3 days. I was able to stay sober and make great supportive friends in AA. I was allergic to all antidepressants. I try very hard to keep depression away. Eating carnivore has helped so much with anxiety. I imagine that I'll be eating this way forever.

Good evening Jordan and Chris Again super grateful for all of this sensemaking. After nearly two decades of mental health nursing I'm more than fed up with the overall shockingly lack of progress in my professional field of Psychiatry and Addiction. Long story short! Think I need a big conversation with an Investigatory Journalist, a Publisher and even a film maker! And most obvious perhaps to me, Jordan too. So much appreciation for you and your work. Grateful for sure. Sanity brain gym, indeed. 💜

Glad you're seeing other factors influencing mental health. Please continue by adding Family Constellations (for historical context ...) + Somatic Experiencing sessions (to calm the nervous system) + Internal Family Systems sessions (to undo stuck parts in the psyche created by oneself, usually in youth, become aware of decisions / beliefs, release trauma stored in body after resolving issues) + diet = paradigm shift. Please expand your experience with these very important modalities and popularize them. We need more people healing.

The pioneering subjects treated on this channel is truly unprecedented. Thank you prof J B Peterson. On topic, and anecdotally, I have been on keto for 2 years, one-meal-a-day. Currently on day 8 of a prolonged fast..

As someone who studies nutrition and exercise physiology and is very invested in their effectiveness, this would be a dream come true. I hope this is taken seriously by the mainstream establishment, by my field even.

I’m on week 7 of carnivore (last 2 weeks I’ve allowed a meal a week to be a ‘cheat’ meal, but still focused on whole foods) and most of my adhd symptoms have disappeared. I’m going to try and get bloodwork done in a couple weeks to check. But I feel amazing, clear headed, no more crashes, my bmi and motivation has improved. I’m so glad I tried this. I don’t think I’m going back, I know for sure I’m done with highly processed/palatable foods. They are poison to by body and mind.

My choice was Paleo after some health issues and blood work. It's been only 2 months but huge turn around in health, gut, allergies, skin, brain fog, more. Cutting carbs seems to be the main benefit for my body. I've also done intermittent fasting (one meal a day, most days). After only a few days, I didn't get hungry except when I wake in the morning and that disappeared as soon as I got moving, went to work, etc. Adding things back to diet slowly has given me the ability to immediately know which foods I tolerate well and what causes issues. I've discovered I can add dairy without proble. But I'm allergic to mangos and cashews. Getting these things dialed in have motivated me to exercise, pay attention to my body and remain healthy. My life, mood, attitude are so much better I feel like I've taken 20 years off my age (I'm 63).
