Most of us doing Atkins don't buy Atkins own brand foods. We buy our own goods. So that drawback is out of the way. And for those of us who aren't severely obese or insulin resistant and just need to loose a bit and then maintain that minus starvation Atkins works really well. I've loved atkins. Gets the job done and I still get to eat lots of food.

My dad did Atkins in 1994 he ate all the animal meat he wanted , it's what he mostly ate and he lost 275 lb in a year and 2 months. He ate all the fat he wanted too but mostly meat and 1 or 2 salads a day or other low carb veggies. The original Atkins diet made it easy for the bed bound morbid obese to get healthy. Many many people found it was the only diet that was getting them healthy and keeping them healthy. It was very simple just cut your carbs and limit caffeine cuz it slows ketosis. You don't have to fast or exercise. Those that have to fast or exercise on ketogenic diet to see results are probably consuming too much caffeine or the wrong sweeteners or not enough fat. Fasting and exercise are beneficial but not required to loose weight on ketogenic dieting. Atkins also explained the dangers of over restricting meats. You don't have to over nausiate yourself by eating mostly fat to ketogenic diet either.😉😄

Yes, the "Atkins" company now sells a lot of junkfood, but it's not what Dr. Atkins would have approved..He also believed in getting into ketosis. I used Atkins to lose 100 pounds about 20 years ago. Kept it off for about 7 years, but some family issues happened. Now I'm doing it again. Different things work for different people. IF doesn't work for me at all. It stalls me out. There are "keto" labeled products out there that are horrible. As with anything, find what works for you and do it well.

But I never used atkins foods. I ate supplements and seasoning like: cinnamon, oregano, turmeric, ginger, iodine, magnesium, probiotics, vitamin D. And I think this healed my guts and metabolism. I was Atkins during the craze years ago, bought books, etc. I actually lost weight, stalled then gained it back. I knew it worked at some level, but was very confused about it. It wasn't until a few years ago I learned about healthy keto, lost the weight I gained and haven't looked back. I agree there is definitely a technical difference and yes, it has nothing to do with being "healthy", just weight loss.

I tried keto and it was effective, but two issues I had were eating insane amounts of fat, at first to the point of almost nauseam, never felt right or sane. Second is it's incredibly difficult to maintain longterm for the average person. Atkins provides a more achievable longterm approach while attacking the main problem. Achieving health is a marathon not a sprint...don't knock the real shoes that can get your there.

True that insulin release is stimulated more often eating 3 - 5 small meals per day, but for someone who is diabetic or hypoglycemic the multiple times per day with low carbs at ANY ONE TIME can be an easier way to start out. How can you prefer Keto over Atkins yet say you tend to go carnivore? Atkins is VERY close to carnivore in comparison to Keto, which is mostly fats.
@shaunbloggsbot95283 жыл бұрын
@@VibeWithVida If you're referring to the carnivore diet it is actually 0% carbs, vegetables. The focus of the carnivore diet is to be used as the best elimination diet for figuring out what a person can't eat. People with a very poor tolerance in vegetable anti nutrients have done it and all chronic inflammation symptoms subsided. Which is why the OP said he goes from keto to carnivore every now and then. I happen to do it myself from keto to ketovore to carnivore. I think it's not quite accurate to compare Atkins to Carnivore because one is a low carb diet, the other is a no carb diet. The carnivore diet is also not just about protein, it has to be high fat because that's what the main fuel is. Protein is mostly utilised for the reparative aspects it possess. Eating high protein is quite a common mistake among carnivore dieters which is why you've been lead to such a presupposition.

He's wrong. Dr Atkins NEVER endorsed products. Millions of people ate tons of meat ( true Atkins) meat and lost massive weight in the 80s and 90s. The products and processed junk came about AFTER he died and his wife sold the company. True Atkins is similar to carnivore diet ( tons of meat) only with low carb veggies. And people lose weight very quickly on carnivore, just as they do on Atkins. This Dr isn't versed at all in Atkins. I'm surprised about that. I've lost and KEPT off my weight on Atkins for 9 years.

5 meals a day worked for me for a while, lost 60 lbs, after I went off of ACTOS. I had gained 120 lbs on ACTOS, could not breath, muscles turned to jello, and eventually all kinds is osteo problems, finally 2 hip replacements, and still struggling with herniated discs, plus eventually had to go on Levemere and now Humolog, definatly in Metabolic Syndrom last 10 years.. However after 2 decades of suffering and a ruined career, just 1 year on KETO/IF and my labs, A1c from 7.5 to 6.0. Mornining suger down from 120s to sometimes 80 and 90, Humalog almost eliminated. But I can't seem to get below 75 Levemere yet, and my sugers yo yo so often, LDL 350 down to 100, HDL perfect. Triglycerides still high, and only 15 lbs lost. But I see I'm eating too much meat protein and too much lactose. Changing to goat milk products and more hard cheeses and less meat. Goal is snack of 1 whole avocado, or olives with cucumber and feta and tziki to work on those triglycerides, or hard boiled egg perhaps, remain on 18/6 IF ( no problem). Labs again in 1 1/2 month. We'll see.

I do keto and have had great success, however, about a year into it I realized the importance of protein and that I was actually under-protein-ed. This is SUPER important for seniors (actually, for folks starting in the 40's, even). I feel a good base formula is 1.5g of (animal) protein per kg or LEAN (ideal) bodyweight. Another excellent formula on keto with regard to protein is your total protein/carb total calories should be 640 per a 2000 calorie daily need. So...for example...at 64kg (142 lbs)...I would need 1.5g of protein X 64 = about 95 grams of protein which at 4/cal per gram = 380 calories of daily protein. I use about 2000 cals per day, so that leaves 260 calories (from the 640) for carbs...which is about 65 carbs. Seniors must get sufficient protein to defer Sarcopenia.

I made up my own diet, and I did well, but unfortunately, with the way life is set up, it was hard keeping up with that diet. 70% fiber foods 20 % protein 10% carb. No sugar, low sodium, and plenty of water. I basically ate a lot of salad 🥗 oatmeal, smoothies, and baked fish salmon and ocean perch. Eating apples grapes and watermelon cucumber salad steam vegetables, rice potatoes, and carrots were the only carbs. I didn't eat pork, beef, lamb, or chicken and turkey. Just fish only and unsalted peanut as a night time snack. I lost a lot of weight very quickly and I had a lot energy and I felt clean on the inside.

Atkins is the best. Atkins Book 2 is Keto. I'm doing Atkins to lose post pregnancy weight. I don't buy Atkins brand food because I don't use packaged food so this man is bashing Atkins when many of us don't eat junk food while on the Atkins diet. I just follow the food list guide, which allows most of my favorite foods. I also drink lots of water and homemade, sugar-free drinks. What did I give up? Baked goods and rice. I lost one dress size and just have one more to lose to return to my pre-pregnancy weight. I plan to stay on Atkins because it is healthier. You don't need to overconsume protein. I just split my recommended daily allowance of protein into 3 and eat one portion for each meal. I eat 3 meals a day. I'm never hungry and I do not plan to fast because fasting is unsustainable for me. I wanted a plan that could be a lifestyle to avoid yo-yo dieting and Atkins satisfied my need.

Dr. Atkins had it mostly right. I don't agree that higher protein is a problem, however his omitting of fasting is an important factor. But taking into consideration the time at which he developed his research, eating three square meals a day was the norm. I believe that were he still alive, he would include fasting as part of the plan. The company of Atkins is simply a corporate entity making a buck, as is everyone to one degree or another selling Keto.

Is Atkins closer to typical Carnivore macros compared to Keto?
@JJTheKaraokeRideshareDriver5 жыл бұрын
I find that I am always hungry when I do low calorie and I find myself again eating again and just can't get satisfied. When I eat 1000+ calories in one sitting, I'm actually good for a very long time and not wanting to snack or anything. I did do the low carb thing and lost weight. Once I fell off that diet, got all the weight back. It's hard to maintain low carb for a long period of time.

Hi JJ, The Karaoke Rideshare Driver. Sounds like you might need some more recipes. Once you have some good foods to eat it is not hard at all. Here are a few recipes kzbin.info/www/bejne/eauomIGZfq6mmpI

What’s your research on Collagen peptides protein powder? Thanks! I find your channel most informative. Maintenance since 4/2017. Still eating less than 20 daily carbs...

It is a great source for people who are sensitive to other forms of protein, or who have trouble breaking down their protein into peptides. People who don't make a lot of stomach acid, stress, hypothyroid, elderly, are often deficient in protein despite eating quite a bit of it. Apart from being fairly expensive I think it is a good way to get quality protein and assimilate it.

@@drekberg I couldn't remember why I started taking the collagen peptides a few weeks ago. Thanks for the reminder. I'm taking it because I don't make enough stomach acid but I'm also on Tecta which is for my acid reflux. I think this is a Catch 22... Nicole

This is great to know, thank you Dr.! The whey proteins I tried in the past would make me nauseated and give me a stomach ache. Been taking marine collagen peptides for about a month now, no nausea and no stomach issues 🙏🏼.

I've been underweight since I can remember the only way for me to gain weight is to train and build up muscle. From too much sweets or fat food i just feel sick or even throw up. Can you do a video how to gain weight and muscle through a diet change?
@drekberg5 жыл бұрын
I'll look into it. Eat real food and include 20-40% of calories from carbs. Being underweight you can eat more carbs than the average person. Just eat real food and focus on the foods you tolerate.

What about Robert Cameron's The Drinking Man's Diet, 1964? Same as Atkins, just add a few martinis a day. It works.

What is wrong with GMOs? With all that sensible and logical talk why object using gmo grown organically?

I hear of a lot of people losing lots of weight on the Carnivore diet yet there's tons of protein consumed. Could you possibly do a video on this Dr Ekberg as it seems to contradict this video. Thank you.

Everyone is different. We start with understanding principles, then we do trial and error. One mans food is another man's poison.

I am a bit surprised because your videos usually seem very balanced and informative. But this time you unfortunately you did the same as most other media does by looking only at the products that Atkins sell. It looks like you never took a closer look at their website where they actually offer different meal plans up to a so called “foodie” plan where almost every meal is 100% home cooked. In addition to this they offer a database of hundreds of low carb recipes. And all of this for free. So only looking at their sold food is a bit unfair. They also provide tools, discussion forums and advice, again all for free. Yes, criticism of their products may be justified, but a look at their whole scope would be more fair and helpful. BTW, I am in no way affiliated with Atkins. I just took the time to take a closer look at what they offer. And I got rid of type 2 diabetes that way. 😊

We need to stop over complicating nutrition. Identify you caloric maintenance needs, and just eat less, but also workout and build muscle. Your body will change.

Keto is not complicated, easier than counting calories and no hunger!

I think at the beginning you say that the Atkins is high in fat, but my understanding is that is low fat high protein right?
@drekberg3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Armando Miraglia. Actually no. It is like keto; low carb, high fat, but higher protein, which can create too much glucose for some people. Also some of the products associated with it contains a lot of chemicals and artificial stuff, but overall it is a sound idea 😄
