Terry you are GOLD my friend.. If there was an Olympics for Vlogging you would score the GOLD medal !!!. The places you get too are fantastic. No one else would have even thought of walking down a deserted train track. But you make everything look like an adventure. The back alleyways of Saigon are fasinating and that Snake Wine looked awesome... Now onto your Hoi An vid for me. Cheers Max Australia.

I semi retired to Vietnam in 2007 took the train north from Saigon many times as I fancied buying/building a house in Nha Trang for the beach. But every plot seller thought I wanted to build a sky scrapper hotel and so priced his plot for one. Bought on a new development plot that only had roads and services and had my house built, build of the plots is progressing at a snails pace which is OK by me. I meet with the locals once a week for pot luck suppers, but always have cheese and bread as a fall back as rats and other meats find there way onto the table. I do try but wash it down with a dozen Saigon beers. I drive an SUV as they give a bit more sight in front, we need that to miss the Honda with a sow on the back. Lived in Saigon while searching for a plot and overseeing the build of my place, I spent my lived in construction around the world so a house was easy. I now only visit Saigon for holidays or large shopping buys, my wife can get all she won't in the local market, plus we have many different types of fruit trees. During covid we shared our crops with neighbors in exchange for veg. A neighbor calls by at sunset he brings home grown peanuts and I supply the beer. We closed the street in mid April to celebrate my 79th birthday with 100 guests most bringing a case of beer, some flowers and lots of cakes. Much prefer the country life to the constant horn blowing of Saigon, but it does have it's back alley charm away from the tourist traps.

Yup. I've been in Vietnam for 10 years. We also prefer province living over Saigon. We live in Binh Duong so we can still get to D1 in 45 minutes as long as you don't go during rush hour. Its much quieter out here.

Love your videos, from Europe, I havent been back to my home almost forever. The statue of the man you see was Thich Quang Duc, the self-immolated monk. He lit himself on fire with gasoline in a demonstration against the CIA-backed South Vietnamese tyranny government. In Vietnam, people don't hate Americans for the war, but they do oppose certain US presidents (especially Richard Nixon - calling him a war criminal). We welcomed almost every US presidents throughout 20 & 21st century (even Teddy Roosevelt had his own homestay on the mountains of Vietnam for his elephant hunting trips in Asia). Yeah I think you can check that out. One of the popular tours organizing in the States is the Veteran's Battlefield Tour. Veterans are taken back to Vietnam to treat PTSD & meet their former enemies for final closure. So following Americans' tracks is also good to look into I suppose?

Great job of really digging into the local day to day lives. Vietnam is such an amazing place. I know you are going to keep discovering wild and wonderful experiences there. By the way the monument at the beginning was for a buddhist monk Thich Quảng Đức'who self immolated in protest to the oppression of Buddhists by then president Diem in the early 60's. He is very revered by many. I learned that from a scooter tour I took when I was there. Keep up the great content.

Side note. U passed by temple which memories Thích Quảng Đức was a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who died by self-immolation at a busy Saigon road intersection on 11 June 1963. Quảng Đức was protesting against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government of Ngô Đình Diệm, a staunch Roman Catholic.

A Vietnamese woman offered you some watermelon. She said would you like some watermelon (Dưa Hấu) in Vietnamese, it seems you don't understand. Why don't you use Google translation when travelling in Vietnam as 4G Internet of Vietnam has covered almost 99% of the territory. You can use the Google Translation Photo feature to read Vietnamese menus or street signs or the Google Translation Voice feature to communicate two-way with local people in English and Vietnamese vice versa. You have a smartphone in your hand but don't fully utilize its Google translation features.

I will try and subtitle some of what the locals said in the video here for anyone who wondering: 7:00 - Không hiểu => I dont understand 9:25 - he was saying " Quay phim hả " mean "Are you filming ?" not my femur lol 11:51 - They saying " Dô ok" => Cheer! ok. 25:36 - She said "Ổng hello mày" => "He saying hello to you" 28:46 - " Dưa hấu, Dưa hấu" is just "Watermelon" 29:00 - " Lái giống hoài linh, nói dưa "héo" " => " He said it like Hoai Linh, he said Dưa Héo". Hoài Linh is vietnamese comedian and people said that the way Terry said Dưa hấu kinda like him with the vowel in the wrong tones. 29:35 - " Quay youtube hả? " => " Is He filming for youtube?" 31:57 - Again Không hiểu => I dont understand 32:05 - " Đi được" => " You can walk" 39:35 - This is true lol, everything in bến thành is grossly overpriced. Good for sightseeing though. 41:22 - it " bún riêu, cháo lòng" =. it mean she sell bún riêu - noodle with blood cake, tofu and meats and Pork Intestine rice porridge. 41:33 - " tuyệt vời" => "It's great" 41:39 - "25 ngàn 1 phần" => " 25 thousands dong each meal" 43:50 - "Quay này nà, Quay này ngon nè" => "Film this, this is delecious" 45:50 - "50 à, cái này có 50 à" => "it 50 thousands dong, it only 50 50 thousands" 46:14 - "Nui bò băm, 50 ngìn" => " macaroni with ground beef, 50 thousands dong" 48:39 - " rồi thối lại 18 đô" => " *Joking* Ok now give him 18 dollar change- laughing" 49:39 - " Chụp chung chứ gì?" => " You want to take a picture together?" 54:29 - "Chụp cho gần gần cho đẹp nha, đừng chụp giống mà nha" => "Take the picture closer i want it to be beautiful, dont make me look like a ghost." 55:04 - She just singing this song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqmtkGCjjLKGo9E 55:22 - "Con vịt bầu, con vịt nè, con vịt nè" => " It a duck, a duck." => Vịt bầu is a common duck breed in vietnam. 55:44 = " Đây 2 vợ chồng, etc ..." => " My husband and I , then she speak some gibberish i cant understand. 55:53 - " Mời mister uống miếng, uống nhấp môi. Nhấp môi cho ông này ổng chụp cho." => " Take a sip mister, just a sip so he can take a picture." 56:16 - She suddenly go on a rant about her life and a girl named cookie idk anymore 56:48 - "Bự quá, mập quá" => " He so huge" 56:52 = "Mister, cho kimchi này đi, cho kimchi sợi dây đi" =. " Mister, can you give kimchi (It her name i think) that, can you give kimchi the amulet? "

3:55 Is the memorial to the Buddhist monk who covered himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire similar to what happened in the USA a few weeks back in front of Israeli embassy. This monk lit himself back in 63 at that location in protest over the American puppet regime in power in Saigon. The leaders were Catholic and they didn’t treat the Buddhist very well

How to say the word 'Rượu' (Wine) ? Vietanmese people can easily understand Northern and Southern accent, but Northern accent is difficult to study and Southern accent is much easier. As an American, you can pronounce the word 'Rượu' as 'Rou' with a low tone (as Southern Vietnamese), which is the easiest way for non-native speakers.
