About a year ago when the pandemic hit in the States, my gym shutdown. I had a follower on IG suggest sandbag and kettlebells. I was surprised because half a year into barbells, I would end my entire session with two handed KB swings. Fast forward to March 2020, I got my first KB and it was a competition bell at 20 kg. I remember the first channel I found was Mark Wildman and I learned the foundations of KB work. I've been hooked ever since. I added to my collection and thinking about adding a pair to the ones I do have and steadily get heavier bells. This past weekend, I seen a video of yours that was a reaction to Dan John, whom I had no idea who he was. When I thought about getting a heavier bell at 32 and up, but his and your advice about having excellent technique made me rethink that purchase. I definitely need to work on form before I go higher. I agree with Mark's approach. Not putting on a diet change at the beginning will have a huge increase in the chance of changing lifestyle. Diet change can be very stressful and it often fails so the person gets depressed and will crave unhealthy foods, it's cyclical. Also focusing on physical effort changes brain chemistry, more endorphins which will be a major pillar of success for sticking to a healthy diet after.

I see ppl asking for a reaction video to mark wildman all the time in the comments on your newer videos and yet here it is. I think you have improved your reaction video style since this one. I think your comments on this video are fair, because while this video doesn't give you the full context of MW's philosophy and training so it is a tad "out of context", for many people it may be the only video with him they watch, so it's a realistic impression they will get. If you watch a lot of his videos, you start to get a fuller picture and you would learn a lot, especially the "nerd math" videos, the basics videos. MW is a total force of nature at this point he is currently cranking out a new video every almost every day, usually between 2 an 10 minutes each, very information dense, but would be hard to do a reaction video to just one of them at random, because the full context isn't there. Pick one of his playlists and go through it in order.

Thanks for the feedback Ben! Hope you can make it to the physical test asap! 💪 I‘m sure Mark has some valuable inputs to share that people can profit from. Sharing constructive feedback about a coach or his philosophy does not mean, that I don‘t agree with everything he says. There are nuances to disagreement imo. My critique is base upon the video with Jack Black and there are certain elements he‘s sharing and teaching that I see differently. I also share my viewpoints from the lens of a GS-based (and PN-based on diet advice) approach. That‘s the reason why I see many coaching aspects differently and don‘t agree with certain coaches on what they teach. Are you looking to be a coach as well? My take on this Gregory/Lebe Stark: You have possibly chosen the worst video to critique a trainer/coach, esp. this one. There's a huge difference in dealing with celebs having massive egos & who always insist on getting their way as opposed to dealing with a Regular Joe/Jane! And this is why I consider this video to be a highly sub-optimal pick; perhaps even a strawman argument tactic...! He has hundreds of training videos, and if you go check them out you'll soon realise that not only is Mark Wildman one of the most knowledgeable KB (also club bell & mace) trainers out there, he is perhaps one of the most humble/unassuming ones as well! And, his training style is absolutely matter-of-fact & safety-first -- just as it should be! P.S.: These are clearly outtakes from his weeks long training of Jack Black! P.P.S.: I shall grant you, though, that, as a general concept, your 'points' are valid & relevant. Peace!

For getting healthy and losing weight diet is always more important than exercise. People have a tendency for compensatory eating when they start moving more. They usually overestimate the burned calories and underestimate the intake. I'm overweight but started losing it steadily in the past few months. I have been able to do intense powerlifting or kettlebell workouts even for long duration, still didn't lose any weight until I got my diet under control with conscious choices. These workouts made me more explosive and mobile than people with healthy body mass, but my weight didn't change because of them.

Hey Simeon. You're definitely right! If you want to build strength; do whatever suits you! This is not a bad thing. Thanks for the input!
@ezet4 жыл бұрын
@@lebe-stark What makes it superior? What does it achieve, as it doesn't look very explosive or powerful. just cardio? Do you have a video about the differences/advantages?
@lebe-stark4 жыл бұрын
@@ezet It's the original way of kettlebell training and it's more efficient since you're conserving energy to work for longer sets. This optimizes your form/ technique (according to the law of exercise) and forces your body to improve in breathing, resting, technique, power output and mindset. It builds muscle, burns fat and improves your heart rate since you're able to work longer without having to put the bells down. We highly suggest you go check out a few videos of kettlebell competitions; you will see that world champions (and kettlebell athletes in general) are always using the girevoy/kettlebell sport style because of its efficiency. Explosiveness does not automatically qualify for better form or better technique. If you "grip it and rip it" it will probably yield a higher power output but only in the short term. You will be forced to drop the bells and/ or quit your session very early and in the end, your initial power ouput will not outperform the athlete continuing his set for a longer period of time. Chances are that you will also put yourself at risk for injury; especially when you go heavy. We hope this helps; thanks for asking!

Only recently came across this channel and I have been watching MW for years. I understand that Gregory claims he made this video for the purpose of education but the fact that he used someone else's video to criticize in order to teach makes it a video based on criticism of another coach which is not just a pure and simple instruction or educational video. IMO Gregory has totally missed what Mark's coaching style is making the claim that Mark is wrong in how he is handling this client and saying it must be done a different way. I completely disagree with Gregory on this point. Mark knows exactly what he is doing and leaving the issue of perfect technique as something that will be addressed in future instructions and the issue of diet for a later challenge is a good thing in this case. The client stated that he wants to eat what he wants to eat and to attempt to force the issue at this time could easily drive the client away. Bring the client along gradually and allow the client to see results and grow in desire to take on more challenges. When you are trying to battle being an alcoholic you don't try to stop smoking cigarettes and stop drinking at the same time. It is too much for most addicts to tackle several challenges at once. Gregory presents the concept of I am the coach and it will be done my way. Mark shows the perfect example of the coach who wants to help the client and is capable of recognizing and adapting to the unique challenges that different clients present.

@@lebe-stark funny how you ask for (probably serious) money when you coach people to injuries, but you expect constructive feedback from a random guy for free on YT. but ok, let's do that. @ around 3:10 we see you swing a kettlebell and you're unable to keep your head steady with respect to your body. moreover, your neck is never straight and your chin is most of the time trying to touch your collar bones. this is never good posture, and makes sense only in one context: a boxer in a ring trying to hide his chin. you're not boxing, so fix that before coaching people. the answer "i'm doing it as X showed" is not a good answer. X is doing it wrong. head forward and chin down is bad posture, period. @ 5:45 : the stick is to make sure that he's not leaning forward, as most beginners do when they squat. like you lean forward @ around 4:15 in your video watch?v=_OyP9zfps-Q (you're doing a deadlift, not sure why you should do that but anyway. MW wants to make sure JB is not doing a deadlift but a squat. your squat is correct, half a point for that). @5:22 of your other video watch?v=_OyP9zfps-Q : are you enjoying pressing a kettlebell with your hips hanging over your toes? jesus christ man, what kind of posture is that? see also @ 6:49 of the same video. JFC man. is that how you walk around? learn to keep your back straight. tilt your pelvis forward so that your lower back is not arched and make sure that if someone watches you press a kettlebell from the side everything is aligned: the kettlebell when it's not on the clean position, your shoulders, your hips and your heels. another detail: your feet are not parallel. fix that, unless you got some gift card for back surgery and you wanna make sure you use it before it expires. and until you learn that, stop coaching people. about the "involuntarily firing" thing. if you're doing a movement that does not engage your abs, either the movement is useless (like curling barbells) or you're doing it wrong. in the second case, you should find the correct way to do it, that involves engaging your abs. that's what the phrase means. nothing to do with your abs showing and diet. just with doing things correctly, making sure you use your abs all the time. i'm a mathematician. if i was teaching "(2x) squared = 2 (x squared)" and baseball coach told me to quit my job i should stfu and do it. they'd be right to tell me so. here goes, just quit your job, stop doing videos, you're doing more harm than good. the people you coach are better off binge-watching netflix on their couch and eating icecream than destroying their bodies training with you. let MW and Tsatsouline do it, they know better. you owe me what you charge for a two weeks' intensive training program and a thank you.

@@lebe-stark thanks for your answer, first of all. the fact that i knew what the stick is for even though it's not my job should tell you that my horizons are already pretty broad. i didn't know the girevoy thing, however, and thanks for that. some observations: i. while searching girevoy, all the people i saw who curve their spines like you do when you clean the kettlebell are aware of the fact that this is terrible for their spines. knowing that, they were wearing weightlifting belts. you were not wearing one, and that says something. on top of that, i think i can safely suppose that you don't advise the people you coach to use one (correct me if i'm wrong, i'll take your word for it). anyhow, if your training is based on a movement that demands this kind of protective equipment no matter your strength and level, you're hurting yourself in the long run. you create bad habits which become bad technique and then you find yourself doing everyday tasks like taking your groceries home with your spine bent like an S and no belt to protect you. what you do in the gym determines how you do things outside it, and your activities in the gym should prepare you to live better. there should be a safer way to do the clean, and there is one. unless you're exclusively coaching people for competitions, who know or are told explicitly that this is not the way to do things when you're not competing or training. ii. swinging kettlebells can be done without wobbling one's head. don't take my word for it, look at Tsatsouline's or MW's videos or the random girevoy guys i saw on youtube. since wobbling your head is not part of the movement, it's wrong to do it that way. if you're unable to move your thumb without moving your index finger, you got an issue you should fix. simple as that. the fact that you can't separate the movement of your head from that of the rest of your body means you're doing something wrong. the fact that i know it and you don't means something. iii. chin down and head forward is bad posture. your posture is bad. the fact that i'm an amateur and my eye is trained enough to see it on a video, and you're a pro and you're not aware of the fact that that's an issue also means something. "there is people who do it this way and they've given a name to what they do" is not a valid answer. all of these are not matters of opinion, but of fact. when people who don't know that their posture is bad coach other people, bad things happen. maybe not within a year but they do happen. you can go on for a long time without correcting people's posture until it hits them, but then it hits them hard. i'm currently 35, and you seem to be of a comparable age even a bit younger. let's wait 15-20 years and compare surgeries and medication for chronic pain. you might be in a better shape only because i do combat minimum 1h per week and shit happens. but at least i won't have inflicted injury on myself through bad practice that can be corrected. if you think my comment is heated, that might be because in criticizing MW you just made clear beyond any doubt that your technique is objectively bad and that you're in no position to criticize anyone who knows what they're doing. you're the kind of coach that takes advantage of the fact that most clients don't know how to make a good coach from a bad one and whose coaching causes injuries in the long run. just visit a random crossfit gym and see coaches make overweight people do an insane amount of repetitions per minute with no regard for technique. such coaching does more harm than good. don't take it personally, you're not the first and, unfortunately, not the last ignorant person to think they can criticize someone who actually knows what they're doing. the world and the internet are full of such people. if that seems disrespectful, it is. i don't respect people who don't know their league. i'm trying to be polite, though. finally, the "that's just, like, your opinion, man" argument is not an argument unless you're the Dude, which you're not.

Giaton you do combat wow! A real man. And math? Wow.. matrix shit right there.. The scapula elevates and protracts as the humerus rotate internally during the back swing. Combine that with neck extension. Plus u know nothing about spine and hip relation. Ask a client to align his spine without him fully in ppt will create damage to the si relation. Plus, the belt is for the elbows, and to remind the tva to be engaged. Nice try tough

You didn't do your homework. Mark has a video of the hand 2 hand kb swing, where he says it's better than the 2 hand swing... But of course, for a beginner he teaches the double handed version first as it is easier/safer. So your only point remaining is regarding the diet... You would prefer some complex advice instead of a simple to follow rule... That is up to you. There is simply no major criticism that would make this video necessary.. but I like your smooth English. Wish you a great weekend
@lebe-stark4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! 💪 We disagree on the notion, that Beginners do better with the double hand swing. We teach the H2H Swing all the time to Beginners and it‘s not only the best version of the swing but also easy to learn.

Mark can only do so much.. Jack Black doesn't give a damn about proper technique. He just wants to sweat then go back home to eat and set up tour dates for Tenacious D shows. We also don't know how much weight Jack's KB's were.... Since its competition style, he could be holding 5lb KB for all we know.

It's always the Coach's responsibility to ensure proper technique; especially in a 1-1 setting. Yet and still, proper technique takes time, patience and practice. It may well be that this was just a one-timer for Jack Black. - Gregory

03:10 - What the hell is going on with your hand to hand swing? It looks like your bending your back at the up, and your knees are not locked out at the top.
@lebe-stark4 жыл бұрын
Neither your back has to be straight, nor your knees have to be locked if you want to conserve energy and work more efficiently. Efficient work is part of the philosophy of the girevoy/ kettlebell sport style. 💪

When you, Lebe, demonstrate the swing your head is forward and your chin is down. What is your reasoning for employing this position?
@lebe-stark4 жыл бұрын
Hey DJ! We're employing the traditional girevoy/ kettlebell sport style method; as demonstrated with the Hand to Hand Swing. The focus of the Swing in general is focused on the hips. In the back swing position, the upper body follows with the spine in a straight line and the neck is relaxed to prevent unnecessary energy output. This concept called "eyes follow the bell" is taught by Steve Cotter from IKFF: Conserving your energy is a conerstone factor employed in girevoy/ kettleblel sport training. Additionally, contracting the muscles in your neck leads to the "broken neck syndrome"; an interesting aspect taught by Marc Ripetoe from StartingStrength. - Gregory

The neck thing from ripp legit helped me upped my squat, although transitioning from a barbell squat to a kettlebell swing and trying to figure out where to look is quite jarring.

I’m a subscriber to MW and he’s amazing in my book. I believe LS is simply providing feedback and his opinion/reaction to MW video. Most of MW videos are geared towards “hard style” which is fantastic and lends well to this “nerd math” segment. LS is more of a sport style and he covers the benefits to his approach. LS and MW are both amazing instructors in their own right. Personally, I take what they both teach and apply it towards my training program. I take what works for me and my body. Kinda like what Bruce Lee did with martial arts. He took from all styles and threw away what didn’t work for him.

Before asking someone to watch ALL of someone else’s videos, you may want to take your own advice before asking who someone is. You’ll find out pretty quickly that he’s certified by Steve Cotter. And if you don’t know who Steve is, maybe read a little bit before asking who someone is or commenting on their video.
