Six months after devastating flooding in Eastern Kentucky, the team at Kentucky Edition visited the area to see the progress being made on the road to recovery.
They found a broken housing market made worse by the flood still struggling to meet the demand for new homes. Infrastructure continues to be rebuilt, but it will be years before all is repaired and back to normal. They visited Appalshop which has restored much of its destroyed archives but wrestles with where to rebuild since their land was never previously considered in the floodplain. And with many homes still without gas for heat and hot water, there is still a strong need in the communities for a hot meal.
Many have stepped in to help and a lot of progress has been made, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Thank you for the update after the flood. My kin folk live in SW Ky, mostly in Lee Co. The thing that touched my soul the most was the people ho lost everything but helped in the rescue of others. May God those who put the needs of others above their own. It takes guts, courage and a special kind of strength beyond the norm to do what they did. There will be brighter days ahead and I hope more follow ups will continue with the recovery process.

You don't hear about this much outside the region anymore. The need is too great yet it's forgotten

The big problem here in eastern Kentucky is actually a plethora of issues starting with buildings most houses don't have foundations... (mine doesn't) the location and site development for a home is truly poor, people don't seem to have sense for years into the future i kinda feel its due to poor education but mostly due to drug use and druggies raising the next generation for the last 30 years... inbreeding plays its role as well there's a lack of understanding when logic plays a roll, also flat out laziness is a real issue too and folks seem complicit this place will continue to deteriorate until it gets sold to developer's and theres a standard of building and site development and when big money moves in the judicial system will grow then the jails will be full the area will have less theives, I don't think it will effect the corruption in the little towns but it may which would be nice unfortunately it wont be as wild and thats the whole reason im even here unfortunately you really cant enjoy this area unless you don't live here because if you do you won't leave your property in most cases because some crack head will break in steal everything you own and then burn the rest and the cops don't give a rats backside
