VSEPR = Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion.
According to VSEPR, molecular shapes are best understood as resulting from the fundamental electrostatic force (Coulombic repulsion) of electrons repelling each other. The valence shell electrons (the electrons furthest from the nucleus and the electrons participating in bonding) are usually in pairs, and these pairs of negatively charged electrons repel each other and try to get as far apart as possible.
The 5 basic molecular shapes are:
linear
bent
trigonal planar
trigonal pyramidal
tetrahedral

@@MangosAreOverhyped People used to think that minimizing formal charge was very important and that sulfur had low energy empty d-orbitals that could pi-backbond. This has been disproven. Sulfur does NOT have an expanded octet. You cannot exceed the octet for sulfur or most main group elements. Simply put, lots of people are simply wrong and unaware of published research from nearly 30 years ago disproving these "expanded octets."
