피아노 연주도, 인간적으로도 너무나도 멋있는 분..🥺💕 질문 하나하나 적는 모습이나 한 글자 한 글자 꾹꾹 신중하게 말하는 모습이 얼마나 섬세하고 진중한 분인지 짐작가게 하네요🥰 넘므 훈훈한 얼굴에 꿀 뚝뚝 떨어지는 목소리까지 사랑하지 않을 수 없는 피아니스트🥺🥺🥺

나이는 어리지만 참 어른스럽고 속 깊은 피아니스트..음악인들은 실제로는 괴짜들이 많은데 보여지는 모습과 보여지지 않는 모습이 다르지 않을것 같아요

누군가의 인터뷰를 이렇게 끝까지 집중해서 보긴 처음인거같네요. 어쩜 답변하나하나 진중하고 무게감이 실려있는지..기자분들 질문하실때 먼저 필기하시는 모습도 존경스럽고..저보다 나이가 어리신걸로 알고있는데 역시 월드클래스는 아무나 하는게 아니라는 생각이드네요.! 이번 시카고오셔서 공연도봤는데 앞으로 음악들을때 더 색다른 느낌일거같습니다. 사람이 음악을 완성시키는듯..! 앞으로더멋진 공연 기대할게요❤

쇼팽 스페셜리스스트가 되지 않기 위해 일부러 녹음을 미뤄왔다. 이해되는 얘기네요. 쇼팽은 피아노전문 작곡가 베토벤은 스펙트럼이 넓은 작곡가 성실하시고 진중하시고 매순간 열심이신게 존경스럽습니다 맞아요 영감이란건 주관적이죠 누군가 늘 나와 같진 않으니까요 쇼팽2번의 2악장이 가장 아름답다.섬세하고 자유롭다. 무대를 더 선호하신다.관객있는 무대가 더 좋다. 내일 일은 내일 생각하고 오늘에 최선을 다하자.자신이 행복한 것이 좋은 것. 내년10월.스케르죠2번은 추억이 많아 소중한 곡.라벨 어려운 곡 완벽한 곡 앞으로 많이연주하고 싶으시다는. 온라인교감?교감보다 생각 감정 감사.관객과의 교감에서 에너지를 얻고 더 소중하다는 생각. 2023년6월까지는 스케줄 있으시다고.2년 정도는 연주회가 있으시다는.좋은 피아노 .건강하시다는.빵터짐.지휘는 안하신다는.두번째 빵터짐.감사합니다. 클래식듣는건 좋아하지만 지식적인 면이 부족해서 공부하듯 썼습니다.

Q: A bonus track was added to this album, the "deluxe version"; any reasons? A: There was no real big reason. I believe you can proceed with a recording only when you're convinced ready, like a competition. And I recorded pieces I like, and as far as I know, this "deluxe version" is only available in Korea. I say I chose it because Deutsche Grammophon asked for it. (SJ grins). Q: . . . What did you feel related to during the online performance? A: I can't remember how many times I have performed online. The one with Goerne was my first online concert after the pandemic hit. A lot of thoughts and emotions went through my mind at that time. I also felt sad and simultaneously felt grateful to be able to continue performing music. I felt more comfortable giving online concerts with other musicians or an orchestra than alone. May it sound too abstract; I tend to believe that you capture energy from people, and synergy seems to originate from it when that happens. So I think it was much easier to perform a concert or chamber music than to perform a recital online. But this time, because there is an audience, I think I can do it more comfortably. Q: You said you would hold concerts in the US next March. . . What are your plans for performing overseas? A: My concert schedule outside Korea, the US, Europe, and Asia were all set two years ago, so the life of a pianist is both fun and predictable because I know where I would be on my birthday two years ahead [LOL]. My concert schedule is all set until June 2023. Q: What will your performances be like? A: [SJ grins] In March of this year, I plan to perform with the New York Philharmonic in New York and the Berlin Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra in Berlin. But I think I am not at liberty to talk about the 2022-2023 season in advance as yet. I need permission, and I haven't gotten it yet. [Haha] Q: When performing on stage, what do you expect at the very least? A: That is something I haven't thought about [SJ grins]. A good piano and a hall with good acoustics make you feel happy and are more enjoyable when playing. Ah, sometimes you get loud noise in the concert hall, and no matter how much you try to focus on your playing, there are times when the noise gets in your way. You can't hold back a cough, and I sometimes cough when I am in the audience. So as long as the noise isn't over the top, I think I'm okay with that. Q: Are you well now? [everyone laughs] A: Yes, I have recovered. I will have no problem holding concerts tomorrow and after. Thank you for asking. Q: Are you planning on conducting in the future? ***Here is the translation*** Part II Q: . . . Were there any episodes during the recording of this album? As a pianist, where do you think you stand now as a pianist? A: There was more of a time constraint for my concerto recording than my solo recording, and on the contrary, I think the concerto recording was easier for me because there aren't many takes to choose from (SJ smiles). I want to say I did my best every moment. For my solo recording, scherzos, too. After my recording is complete, I let the producer and other people sit down to be my audience, and I play in front of them, like a live concert. So scherzos 2 and 3 are taken from that take. I think it's hard to define what success is. If someone asked me what success is as a musician or a pianist, I would hesitate to answer. I'm still learning, and that wouldn't change even when I turn 40 or 50. I believe, if you start to approve of yourself for what you have done so far, you stop growing from that point on. I can't say where I stand now, but it's been a little over five years since I became an active pianist on European stages and abroad. I think I'm a little used to going around performing. This upcoming tour will give me a fresh feeling because I haven't been able to perform these days due to the pandemic. Q: How do you spend your free time? Do you have hobbies outside your performing routine? What inspires you? A: I have no particular hobbies. I don't think of music as a job, so I listen to music when I rest, and before Covid-19, I went to concerts. Speaking of inspiration, I think that can be very abstract. I've been thinking about this a lot these days; when I'm playing a particular piece, let's say this piece gives me a certain feeling, then I will have to convey that feeling to my audience. I try to show my inspiration, but my audience may not feel it. They may feel differently. Of course, I play the piece the way I interpret it, and I am open to all directions and styles. I may be incorrect, or someone else may be inaccurate. I always think it is important to talk and exchange opinions with many people. And listen to other people's opinions without any preconceived notions, and listen to what other people have to say about their inspiration. So I always try to keep it open. Q: . . . You already explained it, but could you be more specific about why you chose Chopin again? A: I'm not a planner, but when it comes to recording an album, I think I have no choice but to be deliberate. It's not because I record an album alone, but if you inevitably record an album as a part of business, you have to play that program the following season. I think it was around the end of 2018 that I decided to record Chopin. I went to a meeting at that time, and I felt intuitively that five years was enough time. Well, I didn't have a big reason when I selected those works. So we were initially scheduled to record in 2020. However, all studios in the UK were closed due to Covid 19, so we ended up recording in March and April 2021. A: I think there was only one reason why I played No. 1 at the Chopin Competition. I had never played No. 2 before, so doing No. 1 was safer for me. Because at the competition, you should play the piece that you feel most confident about. And in fact, it's hard for me to understand from the general public's point of view because I've been studying music since I was little and majored in music, so I'm not sure if No. 1 is liked more or No. 2. I cannot say if I like No. 2 better or No. 1. But I can assure you that the 2nd movement of No. 2 is one of the most beautiful pieces Chopin wrote. I like the 2nd movement of No. 2 more than the 2nd movement of No. 1. I think No. 1 is generally played more in the Chopin Competition because it is 8 to 10 minutes longer in length, and there are more technical parts and musical elements to show. Nevertheless, in my opinion, the 2nd movement seems to have more delicate elements, and especially the structure is unconfined. I think it is more so than the second movement of No. 1. Q: Do you feel differently when recording your performance and playing at a recital? A: I think each person has a different philosophy for recording. An artist like Glenn Gould is an artist who prefers a recording studio. I prefer the stage. So, when I record, I try to perform it like a live concert as much as possible. But that's not easy. I realized there was a big difference between having an audience and not having one. There is also a difference in music. I try to record as close to a live concert as possible. As a result, in the recording studio, I thought, "I think I recorded it like I was playing in front of an audience," but when I listened to it again, I didn't feel the same way. So I think it will definitely be a little different when playing on stage, in terms of how I play and feel. The other reason it feels different is probably because of the energy I receive from the audience. Q: You said earlier that you are not a planner, but is there anything you really want to try out in mind? Do you have a project you would like to work on in the future? A: I said that I am not a planner because - it may be conceived unconstructive - I am living a life with an idea of "Let's think about what tomorrow will bring tomorrow. I give my all for what's on my plate today and do not worry about things to do tomorrow." I live a life as a concert pianist with this thought in mind. Until a few years ago, I had these thoughts that I wanted to recite at Carnegie Hall and perform with the Berlin Philharmonic or the Vienna Philharmonic. It may sound a bit strange, but I don't really pursue those aspirations. I want to be happy, and playing good music gives me a lot of happiness. There will be lots of work and projects in the future, but my biggest goal out of all is to give more performances that I can be more satisfied with, at least by a little, if not by a lot. Staring next year, I hope that the pandemic situation will improve and I will be able to perform at all my concerts as planned. Next year, I will probably return to Korea in the second half of October or November to perform. I think it will be mostly collaboration. And I recently released an album with Matthias Goerne, and we plan a concert tour in the US in March next year. Q: . . . Could you tell us about Chopin Scherzos? A: Scherzos have different characters in all four pieces and are great pieces. I think what you have in your recollection and memories count, and it goes with music as well. Scherzo No. 2 is a very memorable piece for me. I played it for the first time when I was in 6th grade. Before entering 9th grade around January 2009, I happened to play Scherzo No. 2. in front of Maestro Myung-Whun Chung, where our relationship began. In 2007, I also got to know Professor Soo-jung Shin through the piece; she came to hear me play this piece by chance. So I can't say which piece is greater than the other, but Scherzo No. 2 holds a special place in my heart. And it also was the last piece that I played during the Chopin Competition Semi-Finals. Q: Is the encore recital on the 18th (09/18/21 streamed only in Korea) broadcast live? A: (SJ grins) Last year at the Performing Arts Center in Seoul, I was going to give an encore recital, but the Covid-19 situation was bad so that I couldn't proceed. At that time, it was also set to be broadcast live online. I was disappointed that it didn't happen. I hope it will happen this time. Actually, there is a lot of tension on my end. It will be the first time I have had an online concert like this in Korea. I will do my best to be ready. This time, in the first part, I will play Janáček's Sonata and Ravel's 'Gaspard of the Night,' and in the second part, the four scherzos. However, Ravel's 'Gaspard at Night' is famous for its technical challenges. People tend to pay attention to the technical aspect of it. So I think there are times when people don't even realize that there is something special about music. Musically, I think it's an almost flawless piece, and I want to play it a lot in the future. I want to play it a lot, especially when I'm still young. I don't think I'll be able to when I'm older (SJ grins).

***Here is the translation: The Press Conference on 09/03/21*** Part I A(Seong-Jin Cho): As anyone can imagine, after the pandemic hit, I couldn't travel nor play as much, so it took me some time to get used to it. My first tour after the Covid-19 outbreak was in Seoul last year. It meant a lot to me. Although it was not for long, I felt that I was back to my everyday life. It was last year's most unforgettable performance and event. This year, of course, the situation is not that promising either, but I am very grateful that I can perform again. As a concert pianist, I had taken it for granted that I could perform, and it wasn't until the COVID-19 outbreak hit that I realized how grateful I was. Q: How has your playing style changed comparing pre and post-Chopin Competition? What does the Chopin Competition mean to you? What advice would you give to those participating in the Chopin Competition this year? A: I might have had a different playing style at that time of the Chopin Competition compared to now. I guess I was trying to adjust to the competition atmosphere, and I might have been a little tense. It's like when you look in the mirror every day, your face looks the same, but others tell you that you have aged. After the competition, I was able to perform my music much more freely. After the competition, I could perform more freely on stage, but I don't know how it changed compared to 5 years ago. Of course, the Chopin Competition gave me many opportunities. And yet, I remember it nerve-wracking and terrifying. I was very nervous. When my win was announced, the first thought that came to my mind was, "Now, I don't have to compete in competitions anymore." That was the most considerable weight off my shoulder and the happiest moment. Having said that, thanks to the Chopin Competition, I have been able to hold many concerts that I hoped for, and I am very grateful to be able to perform with excellent musicians, performers, orchestras, and at great concerts halls. I don't think there's really any advice for those participating in the Chopin Competition this year. If I had known how to win, I would have won all the competitions I've been to (SJ smiles), but that wasn't the case. It would help if you had luck on your side to win a competition each time, and the most important thing is to prepare as perfectly as possible and maintain in good condition to go on stage. I think it would be better not to expect too much; empty your mind and hope for luck. Q: How do you spend your time during the pandemic? Have there been any changes in your attitude toward music? A: The last concert I played before the outbreak of Covid-19 was in March in the United States. The Covid-19 situation in Korea worsened slightly when Europe and the United States seemed to be still at the beginning stages. As soon as I returned to Berlin from the US, they canceled all performances for the following week and after. At first, I thought the concerts would be pushed back only for about a month or two, and I had some expectations in a way too. How should I utilize this downtime? What new pieces should I learn? Should I pick up some new hobbies? However, as time went on, I started to feel that this was rather serious. It must have been tough for many artists like it was for me. I tried to learn some new pieces, but it didn't work well because I didn't know when the next performance would be. It was like studying for a test that I didn't know when it was. So I didn't try to complete a particular piece. I think I spent a lot of time doing things like playing Bach Partitas, all pieces, all day at home or reading several Beethoven sonatas sheet music, something I haven't been able to do. And like I said before, I felt the importance of performing and, of course, music. Due to the Covid-19, online concerts became more widely available, so speaking about online concerts, in all honesty, I would get very nervous and wasn't really fond of being broadcast. I think I've gotten used to it a lot due to Covid-19. However, you came to think a lot that no audience concerts can ever replace live concerts with an audience. I think it has been a time when you, as a performer, realized the value of your audience and pondered. Q: What motivated you to record Chopin this time . . . ? A: The decision to release the Chopin album was not for many reasons. I recorded Chopin in 2016 and consciously didn't record Chopin's works after that. The Chopin Competition winner gains many opportunities; the opportunities open up for you. It's a position everyone desires, but the risk is that you can be viewed as a Chopin specialist. I didn't want that to happen, so I think I was more consciously recording other composers' works. After recording albums such as Debussy, Mozart, Schubert, and Liszt, by this time, I decided I could play Chopin again. As for the program, I actually don't think much about it when deciding on a program (SJ grins), but I mainly pick the pieces I desire and want to record. I recorded Concerto No. 1 five years ago, so I decided to go with Concerto No. 2 this time. I thought it would be nice to record No. 2 while recording with the same band and conductor to make a complete cycle. And since I recorded all four ballades five years ago, so all four scherzos this time. Ballades, scherzos, and sonatas are the most weighty pieces among Chopin's compositions, in my opinion. I think they are the most substantial pieces in terms of their length and structure. That was how I included these pieces in my new release. I cannot say I played that many less-known pieces before. I'm playing Janáček sonata this time. Actually, it's a well-recognized piece among musicians, but I think it may be unknown to the general audience. It would be a little embarrassing to say I will do many less-known pieces in the future since I haven't tried a lot yet. I want to start with Janáček and try other pieces like Handel's among Baroque music. Q: Who is your favorite composer? Whose works are you planning to record next time? A: It would be too difficult to narrow down to just a few composers you like as a pianist because there are many great composers. Nevertheless, you can say Chopin almost devoted his entire life to the piano. He didn't write any symphonic works. All his works were written for the piano, so I really like the composer Chopin. In the case of Beethoven, unlike Chopin, you hear an orchestra in his piano sonata; he is a composer with a broader spectrum than Chopin, so that is another charm. So, it seems hard to pick one composer that I like the most (SJ grins). I will probably record a composer I've never done before; I am thinking about one from the Baroque era.
