fascinating, how durable is the gold foil once fused? have you ever had any pieces de-laminate or peel off later down the road? how important is the texture? would the gold foil fuse well to a smooth surface? we use sterling silver here in the states (92.5% silver) is there a specific reason you use 95% silver? how well does the foil stick on a ring during and after being resized? how long has kumboo been around? does korea have a long history of silver smithing? what are the typical gold karats used in korea? do you work in gold much?

When pressure is added, this causes an electron exchange at the surface between the two metals, creating a permanent diffusion bond. This diffusion bond occurs far below the soldering temperature for either metal (Dhein, 2004). Once gold is attached, it becomes one body and does not fall off. how important is the texture? would the gold foil fuse well to a smooth surface? 2)Smooth surfaces stick better. It's harder to stick on top of the texture like I did. we use sterling silver here in the states (92.5% silver) is there a specific reason you use 95% silver? 3)When making silver products, Generally, sterling silver (92.5% silver + 7.5% copper) is used. It is like an international agreement. The reason for doing this is to make pure silver harder to improve durability while improving the color of the surface after completion and improving the overall properties of silver. However, as the silver content increases, the properties of silver become softer, so I specially alloyed with 95%. If you have an item made of pure silver, I hope you don't buy it. It is difficult to use because it is too soft to use. how well does the foil stick on a ring during and after being resized? 4)Workers need to be good at it. It's not as easy as it looks. how long has kumboo been around? does korea have a long history of silver smithing? 5)There are records of using Korean metal crafts and gold parts from the 1st to 3rd centuries. what are the typical gold karats used in korea? do you work in gold much? 6)Various gold carats are used in Korea. 24k, 18k, and 14k are the most used. The thickness of the gold sheet,,, A postcard-sized gold sheet is about 3-4g. That's about the thickness. It is about the thickness of a regular paper. Heating these metals to a temperature between 260?370°C increases the movement of the atoms. When pressure is added, this causes an electron exchange at the surface between the two metals, creating a permanent diffusion bond. This diffusion bond occurs far below the soldering temperature for either metal (Dhein, 2004). Nothing is permanent in this world. It may wear out over time. Physical contact may cause it to peel off. It doesn't go away easily with the passage of time. Because silver and gold became one. This is different from normal plating. Thanks~

The thickness of the gold sheet,,, A postcard-sized gold sheet is about 3-4g. That's about the thickness. It is about the thickness of a regular paper. Heating these metals to a temperature between 260~370°C increases the movement of the atoms. When pressure is added, this causes an electron exchange at the surface between the two metals, creating a permanent diffusion bond. This diffusion bond occurs far below the soldering temperature for either metal (Dhein, 2004). Nothing is permanent in this world. It may wear out over time. Physical contact may cause it to peel off. It doesn't go away easily with the passage of time. Because silver and gold became one. This is different from normal plating. Thanks~

"금박" 이라 함은 백세주에 들어 있거나 참치나 육회위에 뿌려 먹기도 하는 것은 아주 많이 얇은 금을 말합니다. 제가 사용하는 정도의 금종이는 "금부" 라고 부릅니다. 금부는 아주 얇은 금박의 50~100배 정도 두께라고 보시면 됩니다. 금부는 직접 만드는 방법과 구입하는 방법이 있는데, 정식으로 판매하는 곳은 많지 않습니다. 제가 구입하는 곳은, 서울 시내에 있는 조계사 절 옆에 "동양금박" 이라는 곳에가서 직접 현금으로 구입 합니다. 세공재료상 등에서도 소량씩 판매 하기도 합니다. 가로 세로 10cm 정도 규격으로 판매 하는데, 50겹 짜리가 대략 20만원이 조금 넘는 가격이니 참고 하시고요, 온라인 판매 여부는 잘 모르겠습니다. 도움 되셨길 바랍니다.^^

Excellent video! In some cases you applied the gold first, burnished it and then heated it. In others, you heated first and then applied the gold and burnished. Is there a difference of when you do it? Thanks.

That's a very good question! There is no difference between the two methods you said. The result is the same. When determining the exact location of the gold leaf, place the gold leaf in advance, If not, it can be pasted after heating.

Universally means Celsius temperature. Few countries use degrees Fahrenheit.

Like this technique! I did a try with gold leaf sold for covering the statues in temples but without success. They are too thin. Even putting 5 layers of them together didn't give me good results. Where do you buy the gold plates of the necessary thickness (60-80 micrometer) in Korea?

The gold part I use is about 200 times thicker than the gold leaf that covers the statue of the temple. It is specially made and purchased at an offline shop in Korea that sells, or pure gold chunks are directly made thin and used. It is sold at a place called "동양금박-Dongyang Gold Leaf" in Seoul, Korea.

금속공예를 배우고 계신다니, 반갑습니다. ㅎㅎ 글 몇자로 설명하기에 부족하겠으나, 최대한 해 보겠습니다. 작업이라는 것이 방법을 안다고 해서 잘 할 수 있는 것이 아니라 반복, 숙달, 체득 해야만 잘 할 수 있는 것이기에 어려움이 있을 겁니다. 많이 해 보는 것이 언제나 최선 입니다. 중요한 포인트만 적어 보겠습니다. 1번,,, 맞습니다. 다만,,, 열을 가하되, 작업물의 땜이 떨어지거나 녹지 않는 한도내에서 뜨거울 수록 잘 붙습니다. 텍스츄어가 없는 것이 작업은 더 수월합니다. 2번,,, 금부작업과 광을 내는 작업은 궁합이 잘 맞지 않습니다. 안되는 건 아니지만, 피니싱 과정에서 당연히 벗겨질 위험이 있고, 완성 했을때 금부를 붙인 부분과 은 부분의 경계가 명확하지 않아서 금부를 하는 효과가 미미해 집니다. 어디가 은인지 금인지 구분이 어려운... 마무리로 광을 내는 작업의 경우, 도금 이 더 잘 어울리겠지요. 3번,,,많이들 간과 하는 부분인데, 제가 사용하는 금부는 시중에서 판매하는 금부들 중에서 가장 두꺼운 것을 사용합니다. 판매 하는 곳에서 1겹짜리, 5겹짜리, 10겹짜리.... 이렇게 몇 겹 짜리로 판매를 합니다. 제가 쓰는 것은 50겹 짜리를 쓰는데, 이것도 얇아서 2번(한번 더) 붙입니다. 얇은 금부는 안되는 건 아니지만, 작업도 어렵고 작업이 잘 되었다고 하더라도 오래가지 못합니다. 내구성에 문제가 있다는 의미 입니다. 도움이 되었기를 바라며, 더 궁금한 것 있으면 전화 주셔도 좋습니다. 모르는 것이 있을때 알기 위해서는 기본적으로 용기가 필요 합니다. 이곳에 글을 댓글을 적을 때처럼...ㅎㅎ 블로그 프로필 등에 모든 정보 오픈해 두었으니 참고 하시고요^^

도움이 되시기를 바라는 마음으로 편하게 말씀 드리겠습니다. 직설적인 표현이 있더러도 양해 미리 부탁드리면서 몇자 적습니다. 1.도금 후에는 금부를 붙일 수 없습니다. 2.은에 금부를 붙일때는 "열융착" 기법으로 붙이는 것입니다. 반드시 열이 있어야 하며, 그 온도도 요구되는 적정 온도 여야만 합니다. 물론 그냥 본드로 붙일수는 있으나 그건 일시적이겠지요? 3.텍스츄어가 있는 표면이든 아니든, 작업자의 스킬과 경험에 의해 작업여부는 많이 달라지게 됩니다. 누구나 방법을 안다고 해서 잘 할 수는 없다는 의미 입니다. 4.금부와 은의 자연스러운 경계? 그렇게 작업 할수는 없습니다. 약품착색, 열착색, 혹은 에나멜링(칠보) 등 다양한 기법들을 콜라보하여 표현 하는 것은 가능 하나, 이 또한 방법을 알려 드린다고 누구나 바로 할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. (추가 말씀) 은 이라는 소재에 대한 이해가 많이 부족 하신 것으로 보입니다. 은(925,950,970,순은)은 합금비에 따라 그 성질이 모두 달라집니다. 그에 맞게 대응도 모두 달라져야 하는데 대부분의 학생들이나 입문자등 경험이 적거나 배우지 못한 사람들은 이를 모르거나 무시하게 됩니다. 은의 성질을 알지 못하고 응용 작업을 할 수는 없습니다. 순은이 아닌 합금된 은의 경우, 금부 작업전에 전처리(파이어스케일 제거등)가 반드시 필요하고, 금부가 붙게 되는 위치나 형태에 따라 그에 맞게 여러가지 스킬(임기응변)이 필요하기 마련인데, 이는 적지 않은 경험과 시행착오가 필요합니다. 또 모든 작업이라는 것은, 하는 방법을 알고만 있는것 < 해 본적 있는 것 < 많이 해 봐서 숙달된 것 < 최고로 잘 하는 것 이 중에서 자신은 어느 정도 인지를 정확히 인지하고 그에 맞게 개선해 나가야 한다고 생각합니다. 마지막으로, 방법을 "안다고" 해서 그것을 다 "할 수" 있는 것은 아닙니다. 다시말해서, 지면으로 몇자 글로 알려 드린다고 해서 바로 잘 할 수 있는 성향의 작업이 아니라는 뜻이며, 반복, 숙달, 경험을 통해서만 가능한 작업이라 말씀 드리고 싶습니다^^

This skill can only work on pure gold and silver. It cannot be applied to the surface of other metals.

As I commented previously you make Kum Boo look simple due to your skill, I was taught to do it by a Korean lady many years ago (She was learning Tae Kwon do with me) after many years I find you have the get temperature just right or it is not successful.

사용되는 어떤 물건을 만들때는 순은을 쓰지 않습니다. 말도 안될 정도로 무른 성질이기에... 저의 경우, 상황에 맞추어 직접 합금을 해서 만듭니다. 지금 정확히 기억이 나지 않습니다만 영상의 팔찌의 경우, 순은함량을 95% 은으로 합금하여 만들었던 것 같습니다.

대화로는 몇마디 하면 될것을, 이렇게 글로 쓴다는 것이 늘 힘듭니다. ㅎㅎ 자세히 제대로 알려드리고 싶어도 글 이라는게 한계가 있어서... 최대한 간단히 적어 보겠습니다. 1)일단, 순도가 높을수록 잘 붙는다는 건 맞습니다. 하지만, 전처리(금부를 잘 붙이기 위한 사전 작업)만 잘 한다면, 925 를 포함하여 그보다 높은 순도의 모재는 금부작업이 용이 하다고 보시면 됩니다. 2)텍스츄어 위에 금부를 할때는, 주의할 점이 많습니다. 황동솔을 잘 못 사용하면 금부가 표면에 안착되지 않고 벗겨져 나가기도 합니다. 깊이와 디테일이 있는... 이것이 어떤 형태인지 어느정도 깊이 인지에 따라 작업 방법은 달리 해야 합니다. 작업이라는것이 그 과정과 결과물 모두,,, 누가 어떻게 하는가에 따라 달라지는 영향이 큽니다. 똑같은 레시피로 요리를 해도 그 요리를 하는 사람의 역량에 따라 결과가 달라지는 것과 비슷합니다. 3)하시고자 하는 작업물의 표면을 직접 봐야, 정확한 판단이 가능 할것 같습니다. 텍스츄어는 무조건 황동솔로 한다? 그건 아닙니다. 학생 이신가요? 기물이 뭔가요? 스케일(크기)정도는? 그 기물 작업을 하는 중인가요, 하기 전인가요? 형태, 크기, 두께, 텍스츄어의 스타일, 작업자의 경험과 능력 등에 따라, 금부작업이 되는가 안되는가, 잘 되는가 못 되는가, 완성후 내구성은? 여부가 달려 있다고 생각합니다. 4)금부의 선택(두께 선택) 두께를 몇 mm 정도라고 표시하기는 애매합니다. 종이같은 얇은 두께 이기에, 뭐 몇 미크론...? 와 닿지 않지요. 순금 1돈으로 금부를 만들었다고 가정 했을때, 가로세로 10cm*10cm 정도의 크기가 되는, 그 정도의 두께가 적당 합니다. 저의 경우, 오래전에는 주문제작을 의뢰하여 사용을 했습니다만, 현재는 그냥 구입해서 사용하는데, 기성품 금부 중에서 가장 두꺼운 것을 구입해도 얇다는 생각이 들어서, 요즘에는 항상 두번 작업(두겹)을 합니다. 사용량이 많아진다면, 직접 순금을 얇게 늘려서 사용할 계획 입니다.

@@SilverMeister 상세한 답변 감사합니다ㅠㅠ 단순히 판단하기보다 숙련도나 다른 사항들이 개입하니 확신이 어려운 것이군요 이해했습니다. 현재 상황은 왁스 카빙입니다. 검은 포유류 동물이 들어가고, 그 옆에 꽃이 곁들여진 형태의 브로치입니다만..생각으론 그 꽃이 순금빛이었으면 했는데 꽃 부분도 결을 넣어두었더니 교수님이 금부는 어렵겠다셔서 아쉬운 마음에 포기를 못하고 질문드려버렸습니다. 말씀하신 사항을 종합해보니 역시 이번은 도금으로 대체해야할 것 같아요. 상세한 답변 다시한번 감사드립니다☺️

그러셨군요. ㅎㅎ 보통 "기물" 이라 함은, 주전자나 컵 그릇류, 트로피 촛대 등의 그릇 기 글자를 써서 기물이라 부릅니다. 처음에 기물이라 하셔서 큰 그릇을 염두해 두고 말씀 드린 것입니다. 장신구,주얼리(브로치) 를 카빙 작업 하신 경우 인가 봅니다. 꽃만 금색으로... 안될거야 없겠지만, 그 또한 마무리(피니싱)가 어떻게 되는가에 따라, 금부가 좋을지 도금이 좋을지 판단할 수 있을것 같습니다. 물론 형태에 따라 달라 지기도 하고요... 일반적인 커머셜 주얼리(업체 제작 스타일-반짝반짝 블링블링)로 마무리 하시는 것이라면 도금 방식이 어울릴것 같고요, 내츄럴한 프리스타일 주얼리(학계 스타일-착색이나 노마감)로 마무리 하시는 것이라면, 금부가 더 효과적일 수 있습니다. 그리고.... 오래전 저도 학생들을 지도 했던 경험이 있습니다. 금부는 어렵겠다? 하셨다고요...교수님이.... 어렵다는게 어떤 기준인지, 교수 본인 기준? 또 어려워서 어렵겠다... 그것은 교수가 지도할 내용이 아니고, 최종선택은 학생이 하는 것이라 생각합니다. 그 교수님 금부작업 잘 하시나요? 많이 해 보셨대요? 어려운지 어떻게 아시죠? ㅎㅎ 현재 제 친구 중에도 교직에 있는 친구가 있습니다. 교수,선생의 역할은, 기본적인 지식전달, 동기부여, 그리고 그 학생이 가지고 있는 장점이 도출 되도록 잘 이끌어 주고 기회를 주는 것이다... 이런 이야기 자주 합니다. 구체적인 테크닉에 있어서 이건하고 그건 하지 말아라...그건 아닌것 같습니다. 대학인가요? 학원인가요? 어떤 교육기관이든, 가르치는 사람의 최고 명예는, 그 제자가 스승보다 뛰어나게 되었을때 얻을 수 있는 것이라 봅니다. 사나배님과 소통하다 보니, 예전 생각이 나서 주저리 주저리 했습니다. ㅎㅎ 암튼간에 원하시는 방향으로 성과 잘 이루시길 바라겠습니다.^^
