This video shows the process of making a silver ring by expressing the hammer texture.
"Keumboo Technique" is a traditional metal craft technique unique to Korea.
This is a technique of attaching thin pure gold on top of silver or gold.
"금부-keumboo" is a sheet made of pure gold.
No glue or solder required.
The effect can be maintained semi-permanently.
Thank you very much for watching.

The thickness of the gold sheet(keumboo-금부),,, A postcard-sized gold sheet is about 3-4g. That's about the thickness. It is about the thickness of a regular paper. Heating these metals to a temperature between 260?370°C increases the movement of the atoms. When pressure is added, this causes an electron exchange at the surface between the two metals, creating a permanent diffusion bond. This diffusion bond occurs far below the soldering temperature for either metal (Dhein, 2004). Nothing is permanent in this world. It may wear out over time. Physical contact may cause it to peel off. It doesn't go away easily with the passage of time. Because silver and gold became one. This is different from normal plating. Thanks~

Camellia oil is vegan oil. The reason for applying oil is to delay and protect the oxidation of the silver surface. A very thin oil film protects the surface. After applying the oil, clean it again to finish. The camellia oil that I use is safe to eat. It is a very good natural oil that is harmless to the human body even when the ring is worn on the hand. Very interesting, different from the Keum Boo techniques I’ve seen in the past as it doesn’t use a hot plate and the gold foil is pre-adheared to the silver prior to burnishing. How are you accomplishing that initial adhesion? I’d like to try it myself.

Hello Maestro your work is fabulous and watching your fantastic videos soothes the soul. Can I ask you something? At minute 15' of the video when you take the ring out of the liquid to give black patina, the gold takes on more of a rose gold colour. How do you get the yellow colour of the gold back? If I pass the green sponge it tends to take away the gold on the surface. Should I put more layers of gold? Thank you very much for your teachings and I hope you can answer me.
@SilverMeister
@SilverMeister 3 ай бұрын
I am very grateful that you praise my work and videos. Your question is of a very high level. The black coloring penetrates internally into the surface of the silver. The black color is reflected and the gold color is expressed richly. To express this naturally, it is cleaned with a green scrubber. This phenomenon can be eliminated by the method you suggested, that is, by repeating the gold in several thick layers. Hope this helps.

When attaching KEUM-BOO, depending on the work situation, it can be attached first or later. This is the part that a lot of people are curious about. Since my work does not have a special finish after completion, As a minimum surface protection, it is often finished by applying natural vegetable oil and wiping it. Although it is not shown in the video, it is sometimes coated with natural beeswax (honeycomb). Beeswax melts easily even at low temperatures (approximately 60-80 degrees) by applying slight heat to it and coating the entire work. Since what I am aiming for is nature-friendly as it is, it can be viewed as a minimum protection work.

I learned to make my own thick gold foil. I roll a small piece of gold to the thinnest setting on my rolling mill. (At this point, it is still too thick to use for keum boo.) Then I place the thin gold between two pieces of copper. I gradually press this through my rolling mill. After every two or three light passes, I remove the gold and anneal the copper. This process makes the gold quite thin, but not as thin as artist's gold leaf.

I think the heating before the gold placement brings fine silver to the surface of the ring, the fine silver layer is very soft, like gold is soft, so the mere pressure of burnishing the gold onto the fine silver layer is enough to bond the two metal surfaces together, not deeply like sweat soldering would but enough for adhesion…imo
