All the power runs through there and without a sealed unit they're prone to getting washed out and contaminated. Wheel hub bearings are the same and the difference a clean and lube has on the feel of a bike is amazing. Great video 👍

Almost identical to the bb on my '94 Motiv. FYI I ditched the cages and used loose bearings, eleven bearings to be exact. The cages hold nine QUARTER INCH BEARINGS. The difference is astounding! Less friction and more support is really noticeable. Thanks for the great videos btw. Cheers!

Hey Kev, huge fan of your videos and they've helped me a lot with my first mtb a used boundary! Could you do a video on bike maintenance on the boundary? Maybe just what all would be done for tuneups, how you clean the hard to reach spots and which are important to clean or lube etc. Specifically I'm trying to find videos on removing the rear wheel and cleaning inbetween all of the gears, hub, etc. I ride in a lot of dirt and dust and have started hearing a weird noise back there since my last ride! I got the wheel off and sprayed things down but have seen others actually remove each cog one by one. Thanks again!

Bought a Schwinn axum 29" in 23' and rode it for that year, taking it easy as I was only getting familiar with the bike. Last year I began to build confidence and pushed it a bit more. Not much longer and I began hearing this sound. I know it's a budget bike but come on, it's the bottom bracket we're talking here.. besides the frame, that's the heart of the bike. Who wants to spend $400 to turn around and have their BB go out?

I knew the problem the moment I looked at the thumbnail which was confirmed later by listening to the audio. This is not a one off problem. So, I have a Schwinn Ranger and so do 2 of my friends. All of their bottom brackets have metal shavings inside. Mine was so bad that the cups got scored so I had to replace everything. My assumption is that these are metal shavings left from manufacturing, presumably from the bottle holder holes, that gradually find their way into the bottom bracket housing and mess the bearing and the surfaces. The parts are otherwise fine.

As I've mentioned before, I had my Al comp about 2 weeks when my bottom bracket went. Yeah it was no fun considering I had to walk the rest of the way home from work but it was only a few blocks however the inconvenience factor was very much present because I have a very labor intensive job and add the stress at the end of a 10-hour day who the hell wants to walk their bike home after it done broke? Now I got to worry about diagnosing the problem, ordering the necessary parts and / or tools, and finally fixing it, and in the meantime find an alternate means of transportation to your job. All in all roughly two weeks until I was mobile again. As I've seen in other comments, I agree that the sealed cartridge way was a much better option than the more primitive ball and cone. One of the problems that this is such a common occurrence with the majority of us here and many more not participating with us cool kids is the fact that virtually everything we own and use nowadays is made in the PRC, and I'm sure we can agree the quality of these products for the most part, is sub-par at best. That old saying, "they don't make them like they used to" stands tall as ever these days. Yay to the puppet masters for outsourcing essentially everything we once were able to depend on and not have to think about when a particular product was going to fail or break much more prematurely than we were once used to. Not trying to get all political n what not here, but the nonsense has been affecting me and everyone else reading this and no one over there is doing anything about it while the rest of the world laughs at us while we give them our money, resources, and above all, jobs that once upon a time, quality was priority. I miss the old days. U see a lot of vintage bikes from the '80s and '90s being restored and they're still solid as they were the day they came out the factory. 20 or 30 years from now we won't be able to say the same thing, or at least our kids are grandkids won't.
@TrinityWilderness12 жыл бұрын
Well Chico Blanca, you’re correct about the Chinese quality issue. Absolutely TERRIBLE quality for the most part, 99% of the time. However, this is not an issue of “puppet masters”, it is more an issue of CEOs, Board of Directors, and stockholders than demand higher profits at any cost. Just basic American economics at work, I’m afraid. Our entire financial system is based on profit at any cost - Capitalism is a “buy low, sell high” system. It may create angry feelings and disappointment, but it’s what we’re stuck with until we (as a nation) say, “enough is enough, QUALITY before profits!” And, sadly, that is extremely unlikely…

@oklahotb32172 жыл бұрын
Really good info Kev. One thing you didn't mention is if you were going to just replace the cage bearings and reuse the spindle and cups, you will want to inspect both the chips and spindle where the bearings ride for scoring or other damage. When I replaced the bottom bracket on my Axum, there was a lot of dirt that made it's way inside the frame and into the bearings. I would have needed to replace my spindle as well if I was planning on sticking with the cage bearing set up.

What size bottom bracket does the Boundary tale? Do you recommend one in particular?
@zebulundocallas2 жыл бұрын
That bottom bracket can last if it was serviced regularly. The maximum lifetime of ordinary bb grease is 3 months, the maximum lifetime of shimano bb grease is 6 months. It does not matter if it is ball bearings or sealed bearings. It does not matter if the brand is Suntour or Sram. If it is not being serviced, it will rub out due to friction and eventually rust due to moisture getting in the gaps.
@terem16772 жыл бұрын
Mine started knocking after 2 hours on the first ride, I ignored it for about a week or two before I decided to open it up and to my surprise, there was hardly any grease, lots of metal shavings, and almost all of the metal ball bearings were deformed. Got the bb replaced then I decided to take a look at the headset bearings to see if there was any grease and just like the bottom bracket, little to no grease at all. Got all of the bearings greased up and 6 months later the bike is still going strong.

What is the “specialty tool” that you used?
@michaelbrinks80892 жыл бұрын
I always use marine grease that is much more water resistant for my truck,motorcycle & bicycles. It's used for things like wheel bearings on boat trailers that get dunked under water often. I dunno much about grease but know there are several types made for several different applications, like high temp or very cold environments & cheap grease washes away easier. Recently found a package of engine coupler spline grease (didn't know they get their own special grease) it's very thick & sticky so it doesn't sling off the spline at very high RPMs. I assume it's also water proof for things like boat engine shaft splines. The bike factories in China probably use the cheapest/low quality grease possible. If the crank bearings had marine grease new from factory. They'd most likely still be fine with no rust.

Beat me to it. breaker bar is your friend. mine was also very poorly welded. also, I had a strange feeling in my pedal that turned out to be my pedal hitting the speed sensor/light power wire splitter. helpful to check things like that if you've got such a setup)

Speed sensor? Which bike are you on?

@@KevCentral Schwinn Aluminum Comp! But with a TSDZ2 Mid-Drive kit installed (hence what was supposed to say 'almost welded' in regards to the BB above, motor replaced it). The sensor came with the kit. The cable's pretty long, and the loop of excess started bumping the left crank. better that than the OTHER things that make that noise/feeling on a mid-drive though. bit of tape got it out of the way. I mentioned it because folks sometimes have rear wheel speed/cadence sensors that might hit the pedal if they shift around on a bump. As an aside, Kev... Know what sort of Brakepads these Schwinn's actually *take?* (on the other hand, it might be prudent to upgrade them considering....)

2019 al comp $40 bucks works .... Should I throw $400 or so in it...

It it works for you, ride it until something breaks and replace. Unless you need extra gearing to climb, lighter wheels for the same reason, or stronger brakes for DH, then just keep it as is.

My new Schwinn sounds like that. It has one mile on it.

It looks like this bike hasn’t been washed in quite long time

It has been loaned out and not in my possession a lot, so no - it doesn’t get cleaned regularly like most of my bikes

Same thing happened to my Schwinn. Sad.

Considering I never touched the crankset aside from bolting on new pedals I’m impressed with the 2 years of rough treatment

Interesting set up on that BB. I remember my first big box bike, it had those cup-and-cone style bearings, but with a terrible 'lock ring' on the ring side that just wouldn't come off - my grand master plan was to put a sealed BB in - however, not being able to get that off, I had to stick with cage bearings. This is interesting in that it has a sealed bearing 'look' to it from the outside with those teeth-like indentations. It's a shame they didn't go with a sealed one to begin with, but wow, looks much easier to service.

A good explanation for non-bike-mechanic types. Well done. Did I tell you that I got some Fooker pedals for my girls on their new 27.5' Specialized Rockhopper Sports? Semi-good weather in my area this weekend finally, so first ride on new rides for my daughters. :)

I spray a little WD 40 on it every few weeks and the clunking noise stops.

I just reach for my go to Sram DUB bottom bracket and NX crank arm set. Never have to worry again. I put them on my Mongoose Ledge X2, and several other bikes that I built. Usually around $135.00 for the set, when you can get them.

The worst possible bottom bracket for those bikes, especially if they get left outside. I cant tell you how many big box store bikes come in with this issue.
@tarstarkusz2 жыл бұрын
2 years seems rather excessively short for all the damage.

The parts on these big box bikes aren't built to be ridden all that hard, this bike got handed around and had the crap beaten out of it. All while never getting greased. it's kinda like my Al Comp's rear hub. It is absolutely toast and I know it, both hubs need to be replaced because they where never made with my Comp's Mid-drive conversion in mind either.
@tarstarkusz2 жыл бұрын
@@DFX2KX The problem is they often come ungreased. Without grease, they won't last. Also, they need to be properly set too.

Surprised they don't used sealed bearings for the bottom bracket. They last longer and require less maintenance. Guess big box bikes try to cut costs wherever possible. Nobody shopping for a big box bike is going to question what kind of bottom bracket it has.

I wore out the BB on my big box bike in a matter of weeks due to dirt and water being slung off the back tire into the exposed part of the slot on the seat post.
@janeblogs3242 жыл бұрын
Wow, did they copy Eastern bmx and put a water slot above the bottom bracket?
