I took up longbow archery a couple of years ago. I watched a lot of vids about how to shoot and was overthinking all the different techniques and suggestions. My shooting sucked. Then I watched a bunch of vids of Kevin shooting. I realized that there’s a few basic mechanical rules, and the rest is whatever is comfortable for each individual, whatever gets the job done. I now go to the range and get asked by other trad archers who my teacher is and how long I’ve been shooting. I always tell them Kevin Hicks, just a year or two, and I’ve had 0 lessons from him. It’s all by feel. They don’t get it.

Hi, thanks for your comment, I don't know if you subscribe to it, but my channel is @thehistorysquad, I haven't done any archery films for ages but I was out shooting last week (both with the bow and the camera) and hope to get some videos on over this next month. All the best - Kevin

I've tried the longbow several times. It's no easy task at all. It's takes real concentration, timing and skill to get it right. This is coming from a recurve user.
@historichomestead3 жыл бұрын
No its modern archery trying to be passed off as period correct. In this period in time the bow was held vertically at all times due to tight formations. And the arrow was drawn and noched on the right side of the bow and loosed from there. That increased the rate of fire and prevented your bow from impeding the shot or action of another archer.

Walter Sobchak, Well you know, since REAL Amercains are Native Indians, it's normal they are pretty good at shooting bows :) While Caucasian imigrants living in the US for the last 400 years, they are mainly of British, Welsh, Scotish, Irish, German and Scandinavian descent, which where are people very used to shoot bows. So it would all make sense (If we admit, a skill praticed for enough time can be passed throught generations)

+Cpl. A. Gadway USMC What the hell are you even talking about ? My first comment on this video was an answer to Walter Sobchak who was mocking England's performance at archery and boasting US's one. My comment was ressalting the fact that the US are not ONE people, but a mix of several peoples from nations with archery related history. Then, after nowhere, he started on biological warfare and smallpox blankets (which is perfectly true,.. but totally unrelated with the prior subject). And since, again, Walter seemed to be trying to boast US image and diminish England's one, I remembered him US also has a lot to be ashamed of. And then you came, again attacking the British,.. what the hell, I'm not even Brit, I don't defend them, they did a lot of mess also, I just HATE to see someone throwing stones when they are just as guilty. Read the whole exchange before trying to enter it,...

He would barely penetrate leather with those shots. What a waste of time.
@alexjohnson9144 жыл бұрын
You don't seem to understand the penetrating power of a proper medieval longbow with (average historical longbows found on the mary rose ship were averaged between 100-180 lb longbows) and with a broadhead at 75lb draw weight at 10 yards which would translate to 110lb draw weight at 250 yards is shown to penetrate aketon through and they were murderously effective against the curiasses of the timeperiod for their rate of fire, accuracy and penetration power with certain tips of arrows namely bodkin for armor and broadhead for the more common aketon.... on top of that there were reports of men wielding longbows in the 100 years war that were potentially over 300lbs draw weight. there was a reason they brought 3 million arrows with them on the campaign that made the longbow famous

Too bad he is shooting with a modern style. In close formation. You can not turn your bow sideways to cross the arrow over the left side of the bow. In medieval archery the arrow was loosed from the right side of the bow while it was held vertically.
@johnminnitt81013 жыл бұрын
No it wasn't, not usually. There are pictures of the arrow on the right, but there are more of it on the left. So even if some shot with it on the right it is clearly wrong to say that was the normal Mediaeval practice.

That thing is a toy! real longbows/warbows were at least 6' long and pulled up to 150lbs! attested by bows found in the Mary Rose!

How do you know only from video which draw-weight is Kevin's bow? I have longbow which is 70# and with almost same dimensions i have 110# warbow so i don't think you can say what you said. Certainly it has far, far away from toy bow. And on MR were bows from 140# to 210# in draw-weight (newest observation).
