Excellent Shad, I could feel your excitement when drawing that 100lbs! The nay sayers will continue to nit pick. They say I wasn't drawing my 90lbs to full draw, so in my last video I made a big effort to hit full. You definitely hit 100lbs on that bow mate! This style has MANY advantages. It's a bunch of separate individuals, whom all are skeptical, maybe repeating what each other has said because they don't know each other. With 890000 subscribers it's not at all that odd that there's a fair amount of skeptics. neither you nor Shad should take it so personally.

Relying on measuring tools and recording these tests/experiments is really interesting to me because then I know for a fact that there aren't any mistakes that you might've made and it gives me a good idea of what a normal modern human can do with some training :) As such, I've found this video to be very intriguing and educational ! Just cause he plays football doesn't mean he can draw a heavy bow. That horizontal pull to draw uses upper back muscles that probably aren't as relevant to football. No different than most athletes lacking the grip strength to rock climb.

Nit picks could also just be people who aren't as well versed in the subject. As a person without a bow, I wouldn't know the feeling or the tension of drawing a bow that's labeled as 75 or 100 lbs. Though I don't doubt Shad's statements, I could easily understand someone thinking "100 pounds sounds like a lot, is this really possible?" With this said, there are most definitely people who judge others because they are liars themselves. Any D&D game has taught me this much when playing with a Rouge. Hehehe

Hi there, I'm a french professional sports coach and I just discovered your channel. Though I only teach "olympic" style of shooting and admittedly know very little about medieval archery, I find your video really interesting. First thing, the people that accused you of lying about your draw weight are either vastly ignorant of the biomechanics behind archery shooting, or assuming that you're as lazy and out of shape as they are; Most of the drawing strength comes from the major back muscles (latismus dorsi) and shoulders, and as such, drawing a really heavy bow is roughly equivalent of doing "advanced" pull-ups (with extra weights, or modified grip) for an average individual. That means it's hard for a beginner, and taxing for an intermediate sportsman, but really far from impossible; if it was, then surely the King of England must have been a high-level battle mage that used high-end spells to boost malnourished peasants stats so they could draw longbows and dispatch French heavy cavalry. Second, it's amusing (but not very surprising) to see that your drawing form is better when you perform your fast shooting sequence than when you try to fully draw your empty bow or try precision shooting at the end of the video, with a far better grouping (ignoring the fact that you missed your target). This could be fatigue, but I suspect it is because you lean much more forward into the bow when taking your time to aim, thus compromising your vertical alignment at the end of your draw; I know from reading some historical texts that you're supposed to do this with warbows anbd longbows are they are heavier, but I also know it is considered a liability in modern archery. You must also consider the fact that spending more time under tension (as in, drawing slowly) very rapidly decrease the amount of power your muscles can develop. Lastly, please take care of your back and shoulder with those heavy bows! Stretch properly, reinforce your back and shoulder stabilizing muscles, and don't shoot long sequences two days in a row ! I want to see you shoot some more, it's great fun. Thanks for your videos.

I don't think you even have half the picture. Shad came onto one of the English longbow forums and started attacking everyone for making fun of what he said in the first film about shooting with the arrow on the right by canting the left arm. It is almost like if some random bloke came into the gym and started telling people with decades of training, that this "new" technique were you back-arch while dead lifting is superior because it can be done with light weights. A 75 lb bow is a light weight bow. His initial reaction on entering the forum was a plethora of straw-men arguments, insults and ridiculous exaggerations. He told one of the admins to "act like and adult", "get over his pride" and that "he made himself look silly" when he didn't accept Richardson as an authority on the draw weight of the Mary Rose bows. This admin is a bowyer and have made several bows to the dimensions of the smaller bows on that ship, and they are far from the draw weight Shad presented as hard facts. Several other bowyers also told him he was wrong. Shad got warnings several times about his behavior, and finally got booted. When Shad was told by probably a dozen heavy bow archers drawing over 120 lb regularly and comfortably during shoots, that his method would lead to injury, he told everyone that they had to prove him wrong. This of cause cracked everyone up. He basically asked all of them to prove a negative. Now, what should not have happened happened. One of the guys able to pull 140 lb gave his method a try. He canted the bow sideways to keep the arrow on the right side, and as a result tore some muscles because of it. This is what his sensationalism will lead to. With 885,000 subscribers you have a responsibility to not mislead and misinform gullible people. That's what he is doing at the moment. It does not work with the kind of bows English indentured archers used in battle. (And no, Thrand's technique is incorrect. He is not leaning into the bow properly.) Shad can do what he wants to, but to promote it as the actually way they did it is wrong. It's in fact dangerous. And that's why he was met with ridicule. Some people even said it was a shame because a person with his enthusiasm might have offered something to the community. When in a hole, stop digging. Don't come in swinging if you're not on a sound footing. We have written sources telling us what side to shoot from. Art is just that, art. It's not evidence in its own right. Actual practical experimentation show us that his method is not the way they did it. And last, I have been told that Shad has deleted comments from people telling what really happened. He'll probably delete this too. No one lied. They speculated about the bow, and they made guesses from 65lb to 75lb. They were right. It was 70ish lb because he didn't draw it all the way back every time. It's far from an English Mary Rose bow.

Here are the lies of this comment. *A 75 lb bow is a light weight bow.”* It’s only light in the warbow category, in the range of standard bow weights it’s a heavy bow, so stop trying to straw man the situation and ad in the proper context. *His initial reaction on entering the forum was a plethora of straw-men arguments, insults and ridiculous exaggerations.* Not true at all, I attacked people’s arguments in the very context they were given, unlike what you’re doing right now, and I’ve provided the link so people will see for themselves. *One of the guys able to pull 140 lb gave his method a try - as a result tore some muscles because of it* Wow you’re such a lair, this is what he said about hurting his shoulder, a direct quote, and you can read it in the comments of his video: “I think it was one of those injuries that happens. Considering that I have been pulling heavy bows without rest for a while, I think these are important factors to consider as well. I do not intent to blame it on this cradle draw but I think it was the ultimate push that popped it.” So you’re trying to blame his injury on this technique when the very guy that got injured isn’t. Why don’t you represent things as they are you damned liar. *Shad can do what he wants to, but to promote it as the actually way they did it is wrong. It's in fact dangerous.* No, it’s no more dangerous than the standard longbow technique as proved by Thrand and mead longbows and myself when I reach the higher weights. Seriously, what are you going to say when I do this too, that I’m doing it wrong like thrand? So your conclusion is if you do this and not injure yourself you’re doing it wrong??!? Wow, because that would seem like he’s doing it right. *We have written sources telling us what side to shoot from* Mate, those written sources do not come from the medieval period! Out of the three presented, two are vague and the last is still from the wrong time! So once again you’re lying. *They speculated about the bow, and they made guesses from 65lb to 75lb. They were right* No, they literally claimed my bow was not the weight I said it was, implying I was a liar, and they were wrong. This is such a perfect example of the thin skinned, misrepresentation, belittling and straw man type arguments you and your friends have been making, this is why it’s pathetic and you need to grow up.

@@ereder1476 Crossbows, depending upon the design, usually have better penetration and are easier to train people to use but take longer to reload and a shorter range. However most Welsh and Englishmen practiced with longbow from an early age. This is why the English and Welsh Longbowmen had such an impact on battles against other Europeans relying upon troops with crossbows. Don't get me wrong later medieval or Renaissance heavy crossbows using a windlass could actually penetrate the heavier platemail of the time period, something the warbow could not do. The Warbow was devastating against chainmail and could even penetrate early solid metal armor made with poor quality iron or steel. The later period heavy crossbows took less time to reload than the black powder weapons of the time and was more accurate as well. This actually made a Pope ban the use of Crossbows in Europe, because lower class crossbowmen were killing landed gentry too easily without giving them a option to surrender to be ransomed (one of many contributing factors that had Switzerlands neighbors force them in to a treaty of neutrality because their mercenaries were too good at their job), if I'm remembering correctly.
