Kevin Jodrey explains why he left his Cannabis Fields Fallow

Future Cannabis Project

Күн бұрын

To play a long term game as a cannabis farmer in Humboldt, Kevin Jodrey is sitting on his cannabis cultivation license in the short term and making ends meet in other ways, by consulting and running his store.
With all the turbulence of the early days of legalization in California, where even small players need to pay big fees to stay in the game and compete against well capitalized Multi-State Operators (MSOs), Kevin decided he'd rather lose $15,000 by not planting his fields this year than $100,000 by planting.
His goal is to not deplete his bank account before he thinks the (regulatory, permitting and tax) cost of cultivating cannabis will be more sensible and the global demand for Humboldt cannabis will coincide with the ability of Humboldt cannabis farmers to sell out of state and country (legally).

This is a man thats apart of a corner stone of this cannabis industry . it's sad to hear this, for this was the last man standing that has show the simplicity of farming and to rediscover your passion in what makes you tick and the morality on how you do business. Such a fantastic insight Kev, you really DO see between the lines. Interesting to see how what you say, which mirrors exactly what the cultivators I met while in the US were warning about (in 2014/15/16), is happening at such a scale and so quickly. I was involved in the first Australian venture (Cann Group-Aus(ASX:CAN)) as the plant manager (basically the only member with real experience with the plant) without realising I was just a pawn in their attempt to legitimise their attempt to enter the green rush, until I was made redundant after getting their licence application submitted and approved. Since then they've been taken on big funds from Aurora (Canada) and have taken steps to become one of the big (few) licenced producers in Aus. My love for the plant and excitement for the opportunity to be able to cultivate legally and professionally was an opportunity I simply could not pass up, something I do not regret, but do have regrets regarding some aspects. I had been quite apprehensive of the path being taken, and truly feel I contributed too much of myself to the endeavour that they now claim (but that's a story for another time.) As a cultivator, fully fledged weed-nerd and true lover of all things Cannabis, my love for the plant trumps any short term financial gain, so I believe the opportunity exists at this time (albeit briefly) to educate people before corporate spin and brand 'tag lines' dictate the information stream that consumers are exposed to, ending much chance of objective viewpoints leading to a clear understanding. For example there are plenty of companies selling CBD without any real comprehensive understanding of the Endocannabinoid System, something which various regulatory groups have indeed noticed (including australia's Therapeutic Goods Administraton (TGA)) and tried to put a quick stop to. But this is exactly the problem we face in that big companies can get product (and in some cases early on, tainted) to market whose pharmacological effects they don't actually understand. So getting to the point Kev, I'm reaching out as I feel the highest value I can bring to the industry in as an educator and advocate for quality and ethics in Cannabis. I truly feel that the more educated people are with every aspect of Cannabis, the more empowered they are to make the right decisions with regard to the choices they make when selecting, growing, processing, purchasing or consuming Cannabis. The path you are taking with the Open Source approach is truly the only ethical way cannabis can stay real and out of the hands of corporations, which is a fate much worse than most people can really imagine. After all, why would corporations want to give away all their hard fought "secrets" that were in many cases, gleaned or inspired only from looking at the endeavours of others who risked their freedom and many cases lives for the love of the plant that they (the corporates) have none for. When the corporations control what we are able to know about Cannabis, we will have reached that end in my opinion. When they are prepared to spend more than we all have collectively to protect their "investment", we are all fucked, despite the facts, history and the truth about cannabis. So.... I'll stop waffling now. Hit me up if you get a moment, I'd love to chat with you sometime over the airwaves. Cheers Wiggy

@@MrMaitland79 Well, I understand your frustration, I think we're all feeling more or less the same way. For decades I wished for legalization, and now that I see what it looks like...it's worse than I ever could have imagined. But I still think every single person that can grow any number of plants legally should do so. In your case I think I'd either buy clones and not keep my own mother, or grow feminized autos. I don't see anything else as an option with a limit of 4.

So in Cali we are allowed to grow 6. This is enough to grow for my friends and myself. What we do for propagation is have one house dedicated to breeding so we guarantee seeds for the following seasons. Think about it. If everyone with the necessary space grew their 6, and others breed...we can squeeze out any cost and eliminate guessing on the quality of smoke... Thats going to be my approach until they outlaw my 6 at home...

I suggest that you grow a small garden for yourself at home. It's a wonderful hobby and a way to provide you and your family and friends with medical/recreational herb. But to make a living, consulting is the way to go. Whatever skills you have in cannabis, offer them as a service to others and you will make far more money with far less heartache and trouble than trying to make a living as a grower. It's a sad thing to have to say, but it's true. In perhaps 10 years there will be a craft cannabis industry like the microbrewery industry has become for beer. But the market isn't educated enough yet to make room for that idea now. It will take time before the market will be robust enough to split into sub-markets like alcohol did after the end of prohibition.
@rollyrolas

I totally agree. I grow quality organic in my backyard and had a few friends suggest i cultivate as a sidebusiness. I start reading the requirements and they look more like prohibitions, financially speaking. So i just share the earth's fruits instead. I get more satisfaction by not participating in the capitalism and just giving the stuff away.

Why dont small farms that get along with one another, group up under one larger company name with each farmer as a private contractor. They could then have the right to grow their own strains and sell them as their own product lines. That way a distributor could work with several farms for one solid rate. That way the individual farms could get their products tested to guarantee their quality and price points when sold.
