I think it's safe to say that Nealon admired the bit, and saw the opportunity to evolve it, and in my opinion, was very successful in doing so. Steve Martin did a similar bit on the Johnny Carson show. He sounded very sincere about having to attend a very important meeting and had to leave right away. Johnny’s reaction was genuine as he said his goodbyes. Steve exits the stage, but to everyone’s surprise, he returns, sits back down, and sheepishly apologizes to Johnny about making up the whole thing. He really didn’t have anywhere else to go. It was hilarious. Kevin’s take was slightly different, and equally as funny. I think that maybe he returned one too many times, but it was a good bit.

I saw that when it first aired. As a huge Steve Martin fan I never missed his appearances on the Tonight Show. They were all great but that one was near the top. My favorite was one where Johnny introduced him and said what a down to Earth guy Steve was, even with all his success. Then Steve comes out wearing outrageous attire, doing crazy stuff like drinking from a champaign bottle and tipping Tommy Newsome from a wad of cash. It was great. Can't find it on KZbin.
