Without a doubt there are good public schools here in the US, like New Trier HS, in the Chicago suburbs. And then you look at grossly failing systems like Chicago and Baltimore Public Schools. From the book … Made in America … author … bill Bryson What is almost always overlooked in these debates is that people have been complaining about declining educational standards for about as long as there have been schools to complain about. “Bad spelling, incorrectness as well as inelegance of expression in writing, ignorance of the simplest rules of punctuation, and almost entire want of familiarity with English literature, are far from rare among young men of eighteen otherwise well prepared for college,” lamented the president of Harvard in 1871. A colleague of his despaired of “the tedious mediocrity” of compositions among students and the want of “fresh thought.” Princeton University was so alarmed at the quality of its undergraduates that in the 1870s it established a remedial writing clinic. And these, as Daniels notes, were “the picked youth of the country,” the lucky few who had been fortunate enough to get any kind of secondary education.
@trudyjager56094 күн бұрын
To figure out the problem, look at states where children are performing well and states where students are performing poorly. As a retired teacher, the difference is not teacher unions or lack thereof. I taught in the Christian school system without a union but some states have strong teacher unions and excellent education. The difference is whether or not a state believes education is important and all children have a right to a good education. Paying teachers so little that they are forced to take a second or even third job to make ends meet means your state doesn’t care about education. It means that your teachers who can leave and go to a state where teaching is their only job. Your schools are left with teachers who have a lower standard or education or can’t afford to move. Gutting the education department won’t help. It will simply lower standards even further. You will lose professionals, trades, to places where education is valued.

Math education at the elementary level in the United States is a complete farce, and at the middle and high school level, a complete joke. At the elementary level, kids should develop mechanical arithmetic skills (i.e. no need to understand why, just do it without questioning), then at the middle school level, start teach them a little why, and at the high school level, they should learn how to ask questions for themselves. Ironically, America has one of the best college level and graduate level pure math programs in the whole world, attracting many talented mathematicians from around the world, but at the K-12 level, it's a complete joke. I was a math professor before coming the the US and, initially, I tutored K-12 kids and it's such a big headache to me. I gave up tutoring. And for the non-Asian Americans - I wanna tell you that math is not just for Asians. Do keep in mind that modern (precise, rigorous) mathematics is developed by Euclid (Ancient Greek) and later on by Cauchy, Weierstrass, Hilbert, etc., all of whom are not Asians. Education is a mess because the Federal government took it over; requires all schools to be doing the same thing in order to collect "accurate" data, teachers are having difficulties because this is an entertainment society where other countries are far more honor societies that require rigor and relevance. In addition, students come to class with more expensive shoes, finer clothing and huge cell phones but cannot and do not bring paper and pencil to class. The idea that students must have a chrome book for class is ludicrous but makes the efforts of the founding fathers phenonmenal since that did all their work through reading, debating, and deliberation. Get the gov and chrome books out of the classroom and allow the teachers to be creative again. Finally, the US Supreme Court has argued in favor of religion in the classroom as long as all 5 major religions are taught and there is no proselytizing. If you cannot talk about where the moral good comes from you will never have moral good.

A lot of kids in schools they been in a house that was being remodeled or has a dad that is a painter where the lead effected their learning skills then get tortured all through school constantly getting hounded for better grades, pure torcher. Also, some kids are just not interested in learning that nonsense after 4th grade and shouldn't be forced.

Education is primarily a state and local responsibility. Four of the five states with the worst education outcomes are red states. Five out of five of the states with the best education outcomes are blue states. The math speaks for iitself.

@@stanleyclark923 he IS a convicted felon, the sentencing is not relevant for that. He was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business documents. That's who he is, a liar and a cheat and a criminal. And now he's our president, because conservatives have zero integrity these days.

God loves us, which is the motivation behind His seeking us. Why would anyone flee from that? Reclaiming prosperity

good stuff. Hey Kevin... can a microwave have one of those "projection" keyboards integrated into it... when you open the microwave it turns on... when you close the door. it sets a backround timer.. and is on for 30 seconds or some time... gives you enough time to punch in on the counter the projection keyboard control panel... so no panel on the front.. just wipe the counter to clean finger prints. no dirty microwave, or display panel... projection display control panel.. new idea or not?
@adamplona94383 күн бұрын
Projection keyboards... also good for military security... no panel to hack... no buttons... facial scan and projection keyboard appears. no ports to plug into.. no holding key board buttons on boot up... facial scan, or eyeball.. to unlock the "projection keyboard"... all sorts of applications.

As far as mediocre teachers are concerned, the real problems are 1) the selection process and 2)the content of their training curriculum. They don’t look for bright students and the ones they choose learn so little while they are there. The whole system has an intellectual bias. Only occasionally has it been shocked into preferencing academic work, After Sputnik they did meaningful math and science reforms because they realized that the Russians had put so much emphasis on this subjects. This went along with an emphasis of testing which made them focus on high IQ students, as they could recruit scientists and engineers. But because of the racial problems of the 60s, that emphasis fell away in favor of upgrading the schooling of previousl ignored black students. Thereafter “equity” in schools became its focus right up to the present day.
