Met Kevin at a con some years ago. And he was fantastically kind to do a sketch of warlock for me. One of my absolute favorite characters 😍👍

So awesome you did a tribute to Kevin O’Neill. He was one of British comics most unique talents. His 2000AD work (Nemesis the Warlock, ABC warriors) really set the anarchic, anti establishment tone for the early, and probably greatest period, of that comic. Not only that but he was pivotal for getting his fellow artists recognition in 2000AD - when working as a graphic designer for the publisher of the comic he snuck in the credit box on every story which named the writer, artist and letterer actually without the permission of editorial. It was a huge first in British comics and the first step on the road to creator rights.

Damn it. At least he'd reached a point of success where the money from LOEG made it possible for him to be free of the kind of grind that wears down comic artists. O'Neill has given a lot of fascinating interviews; he was a great subject because he was witness to the history of UK comics, especially the transition that was made from the 50's to the late 70's. He started out as a gofer at IPC, did production work and lettering for their comics and was on staff as an editor during the creation of 2000 A.D. I think the artists you mentioned were likely influences. He was a big fan of the early Kurtzman Mad comics which he saw in paperback reprints and also a big fan of classic monster movies. Some of his first art was for a British Movie Monster poster magazine. He was proud of the fact that the Comics Code refused to approve a DC Green Lantern story based not on any particular action or image, but purely on his style which they found disturbing overall.

Great loss of a unique artist. Met him at Comic fair here in Lisbon a few years back. Very approachable and nice person. So sad…

Great video on a great artist. You really do need to check out Nemesis the Warlock, it's amazing - completely blew my head off when I was a kid. There's a lot of the great Mad magazine artists in his style. But some British influences you might not be familiar with, who I think you'd enjoy checking out, would be Ken Reid and Leo Baxendale, who were giants of British humour comics, and Ronald Searle, a book illustrator who was also a big influence on Ralph Steadman. American art deco illustrator Russell Patterson has to be in there as well. I don't think there's any connection between the "Rubber Johnny" grafitti in Marshall Law and the Chris Cunningham video. A "rubber johnny" in British slang is a condom, so they almost certainly used it independently. Chris Cunningham did do some comics work, in a Simon Bisley influenced style, for 2000AD.

Seeing as you mentioned Chris Cunningham, like Kevin O'Neill he also worked for 2000AD/Judge Dredd Megazine. He used the pen name 'Chris Halls' when he was an artist for them. ps. Nemesis the Warlock by Pat Mills, Kevin O'Neill, Jesus Redondo, Bryan Talbot, David Roach, John Hicklenton, Henry Flint etc. (1980 - 1999, 2000AD) is one of the great 2000AD series, and heavily influenced stuff like Warhammer 40k, it was also one of the first 'grimdark' comics, a genre that Pat Mills pretty much invented.
