Oh! Fun facts! 2:45 - all those are only part of his artwork...he keeps every single piece of illustrations/char designs he makes because he says each feels like it's a child of his. Rarely has he ever given any away. #2: he used to be somewhat of a procrastinator. When he first was hired by square to make character designs, theyd come to his house to pick up the art and he'd make them wait by serving them tea and talking to them while he rapidly made the characters. Square was delighted by his work(and impressed he could pull it out so quickly) that they didn't mind lol

I met him one day, when he came to visit campus. Everyone must have been on deadlines (others told me later they were sad they missed it or didn’t even know about it), because his event was (strangely) only partially filled during that day. I spoke to him, and he drew an image in black and white on the back of one of my own mini drawings on bristol board (I didn’t have any other paper, or a copy of his book) in the mini portfolio I had with me. I consider it quite the honor he made the drawing for me as a gift, considering the above, Lola Lola. He was quite thoughtful!

After studying art in college, I’ve been having a hard time to find flow in my process. I feel better about my art then before learning about the art principles in school. I come back to this video because Mr. Amano’s process helps me remember the feeling of that flow. There’s something raw and beautiful about his work.

It’s been 2 years and even if nothing has changed visually or physically, I hope that your growth and creativity never ceases to exist and blossom. Artists are extremely under appreciated in todays world, my grandfather and great grandfather were artists and my father, after art school, was too depressed to continue his art. Seeing his passion die over years has taught me to always appreciate the beauty of art and artistic expression. Please never give up on art and creat great things, if you genuinely lost the passion that’s okay you don’t have to continue. But if your inspired and willed to do it but lack motivation, I hope you find it again in this lifetime.

I am unable to adequately express how much his artwork meant to my conception of Final Fantasy. The FFVI manual and strategy guide artwork, especially combined with Uematsu's music, took my 11 year old imagination to places only hinted at by those adorable character sprites. I can still barely put it into words. Glad to see he's still at it!

Same. The FFVI manual was my first encounter with Amano's work and Uematsu's music. I was 12. It still inspires me today. I've bought artbooks, bought cd's, went to concerts, cosplayed versions of his illustrations. I've done some of those "draw your character in different styles" memes and used Amano's style as one of them (it's a lot of fun to mimic).

Amano seems to have healthy boundaries towards his own art. When I listen to him it feels like he doesn't know what's happening when he draws but is still doing it with his whole heart and soul. I wish I knew how he does that.

Absolutely, Yoshitaka Amano's ability to translate his imaginative visions directly onto paper is indeed remarkable. It's a rare talent that not only showcases his skill but also grants him a sense of freedom in his artistic expression. This efficiency and freedom allow him to create art that truly captivates and transports viewers into the fantastical worlds of his imagination.

Artist Paul Klee referred to the drawing process as 'taking a line for a walk'. You often start in a general direction with no idea where you're going, just keep moving and see where you end up. Amano seems very comfortable with starting in front of a blank sheet of paper and taking that sow wander into the unknown

i'm still praying we one day get a new final fantasy that actually tries to replicate or directly translate amano's ethereal style instead of just using it as a jumping off point for general visual design.

I was about to comment the same thing. Imagine if Square experimented with new art styles to differentiate each new iteration of the series (a la like Nintendo does with Zelda)? The difference between FF9 and the other games was probably the biggest 3D artistic leap we've gotten, but there is so much potential to dip into new techniques rather than reiterating the same art design philosophy over the last two decades. Like, I'm playing Okami right now, and I can only imagine how gorgeous a AAA game with a similar style would be.

It blows my mind that this one man has single handedly inspired one of the most iconic jrpg series of all time. And he basically just does cover art and character design. His actual images aren't in most of the productions they are produced for, and yet his cover art is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen and his character designs permeate every title. Ps. I LOVE Angel's Egg.

Yeah don't stress about it too much. And many who say they have a style in reality have a look that's defined by their limitations as artists/lack of draughtsmanship. Going for an intentional aesthetic is something else again.

Thank you, uploader! For Westerners who want an English book of his art work, I highly recommend "Worlds of Amano" which was first published in 2007 or Fairies, as well as all the "The Sky: Art of Final Fantasy" books (there are 3 total I believe). Some of these are available to read online & purchase. Many modern games designers pay tribute to Amano's style, a good example being Ubisoft's "Child of Light" (2014) where the movement of the protagonists' flowing hair was specifically based on Amano's linework

I think more people should appreciate the artists work rather then constantly comparing it to some one else.

Thanks for the kind word, we really think that there is more than can be done. We had this idea of making Archipel an "archive" log of Japan's creative minds, which is still something we want to pursue.

Amano has always been a huge influence on my artistic journey. Its wonderful seeing him work in his studio! Seeing those final fantasy illustrations I've seen through my whole life being held by amano on the original paper really struck a chord with me. I didn't realize how small some of those final fantasy character sheets were. To think that from such small, normal sheets of paper, he was able to to introduce millions to worlds he dreamed up is amazing. thank you for the interview!

Amano's illustrations are some of the most beautiful pieces of art I've ever seen. He also did the amazing character design for Angel's Egg. One of my favorite works of his is the Behemoth battling the Warrior of Light.

I agree with this. His art has a "charm" & universal appeal which is also the case with Amano. Both of those artists' work is adored in the West which is a testament to their skill & that they've absorbed so many different types of art & masters & yet created a style all their own which is enjoyed worldwide
