Ironically, Kevin entered Pentatonix not realizing he could sing. Just an avenue he had not gone down, he had so many other talents to explore. Legend has it that it was Avi and Mitch that recognized his potential for singing and started working with him to develope that skill as well.

Kevin began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. It was a viral KZbin video of Kevin celloboxing (playing his cello and beatboxing at the same time) that first brought him to the attention of the trio, back when they were desperately searching for a beatboxer to fill out the band so they could audition for _The Sing-Off._ Kevin is a world class cellist. I recommend "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth"; this is a live feed from a Pentatonix concert in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epOmkqasmLOrbZo

Saw him live last week and it would blow your mind. In addition he is funny and happy and such an open, beautiful person. God made a special person when he created Kevin. He was studying Pre Med at Yale when he made an about face to travel across the USA to join 3 young kids he didn’t know to tryout for an a capella talent show. And the rest is history.

@@sheilatumpach2112 Actually, he'd just graduated from pre-med. But he had already been accepted to Yale Medical School - he'd planned to become a surgeon - and he gave up his spot to join Pentatonix. I'm sure he could have gotten in anyway if he'd decided to reapply after they lost their first recording contract, and the fact that he didn't take that option is the most impressive thing about Kevin, in my opinion.

So glad you are checking out Kevin's solo stuff!! it isn't fair that one person has so many God given gifts, but at least they are being shared with all of us to enjoy! His cover of Sign of The Times is another one of my favorites! He also plays the saxophone. He has played the cello and sax both at Carnegie Hall. So talented that he also speaks multiple languages fluently.

Kevin is a classically trained Cellist. He also holds a Pre-Med degree from Yale. He speaks fluent Mandarin from his studies over in China also. You really need to watch the video that was made from there tour last year called Kevin's 5th. If you watch it from the start Scott introduces Kevin and he tells you how they met Kevin just before the start of the show The Sing Off. If you loved this that one will truly blow your mind.

I do believe Mitch is the best vocalist of the group, but Kevin is definitely the most musically talented. As a violinist, I can tell you that what he does on that cello, which I have seen live and up close with my own eyes, is truly insane. I echo those that have said you need to see Kevin's Fifth. It rewrote what classical music meant to me.

You just made me extremely happy. Thank you for reacting to Kevin's video. I look forward to more of your reactions to his videos and music. Everything on his KZbin channel is amazing. My current obsessions are his performance KOvers of "Sign Of The Times" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". The "Adele Medley" is incredible. It's all music, no singing, but with the way he makes his cello sing you can almost hear the words to the songs in your head as he plays. It's hard to explain but it is a magical experience. .

Kevin was "discovered" for PTX when his YT video went viral -- he was "Cello boxing" and he's an amazingly talented cellist who can play while he does his beat boxing...Let's add that he was Yale pre-med and as an exchange student learned fluent Mandarin. There's a video of PTX on a Chinese version of Sing Off where he astonished the audience with his ability to speak elegantly.

SuperFruit was a vlog Scott and Mitch posted to back when they were living together. They did all sorts of fun stuff on it, including hilarious skits, at least one "Evolution of..." medley, and covers of songs they liked, from a variety of sources. They put out two albums: "Future Friends" 1 and 2, and posted official videos for some of those songs on their SuperFruit channel. And, in response to the 2016 massacre at Pulse (a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida), which killed 49 people and left many more wounded, they perfomed a powerful rendition of Katy Perry's "Rise," in collaboration with three other members of the LGBTQ+ community. In general, when watching anything funny on SuperFruit you should stick around after the obvious end for the blooper reel. I'm sure someone else has already said this in the comments, but there are honestly too many for me to care to read through, so I'll say it just in case... Not only did KO play a cello (that instrument he worked over as if it were an electric guitar) at Carnegie Hall, he also played the saxphone on stage there as well. Dude speaks fluent Mandarin (and I assume whichever his parents' native tongue is), but also graduated Pre-Med from Harvard and seems like one of the genuinely nicest people in pop culture.

You should definitely check out his cover of "sign of the times" it's a lot like this one but with a couple things added in. The instrument is an electric cello and he uses a distortion pedal to give it the "electric guitar" effect. I love everyone in ptx and for years I said Mitch was my favorite but KO took the lead a long time ago and as talented as every member of ptx is, I think Kevin is from a different planet. And FYI, it's a Yamaha electric cello. His acoustic cello is named Beyonce. (Notice the curves of the body on the cello???😉 Haven't heard if he named the Yamaha or not. But it works better for concerts and I'm sure it helps that he doesn't have to worry about the acoustic being destroyed on an airplane going overseas. And he placed third IIRC at a Yo Yo Ma competition back while completing his Pre Med degree at Yale...Yes, God gave him several doses of talent. And Kevin's faithful to do God's work as well.

The instrument Kevin is playing at the beginning and end of the video is an electric cello, which bears much the same relationship to a "normal" cello that an electric guitar bears to an acoustic guitar - the sound can be manipulated electronically before it's sent out to the audience. And since both a cello and a guitar are instruments where strings under tension are being played (whether bowed or plucked or strummed), you can (as Kevin just demonstrated) make an electric cello sound an awful lot like an electric guitar. Another video where Kevin demonstrates this is Kevin's Fifth, recorded live during a concert when Kevin takes center stage as most of Pentatonix takes a break mid-concert. It's well worth a look!

@@jimodell99 I think he's actually performed with Yo Yo Ma; do you know if that's correct? Naming an instrument is difficult, at least for me. I have a classical guitar with a beautiful voice; I've had her for something like 35 years and I still don't know what her name is, only that I'll recognize it when I hear it. "Picking" a name for her feels rude, it feels like she already has a name that I can't quite discern, and imposing some other name on her would be impertinent. But I think Kevin's process is different.

@@margretrosenberg420 Kevin entered a Yo Yo Ma contest one Spring Break at Yale. From Wikipedia "He won runner-up in Yo-Yo Ma’s "Celebrate and Collaborate With Yo-Yo Ma" competition (Ma said Olusola's version of Dona Nobis Pacem was "inventive and unexpected") and opened for KRS-One at Southern Connecticut State University." ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Olusola ) I met my best man the first week of class at a Junior College. Bob got me to start singing with him. He called his guitar Murgatroyd as in 'Heavens to Murgatroyd', or Mergy for short. Then a girl joined in. We formed a little trio and with some others at the BSU started holding weekend Youth Revivals at small churches. He got me to name my first guitar. A cheap Ventura, but I have no idea what I called it because 5 months later I set the Ventura down and never played it again. Why? I bought a used Conn 12 String. The sound was so big and full, I called it Detroit. That was 49 years ago this month. And I still have Detroit, though my hands won't let me play anymore. In fact, I just asked Bob to check with one of his sons who is a worship music leader to see if he would like to have it. But naming music instruments was brought into a series of books I've been writing for the past 12 years. Sorry for the long walk down memory lane.

Kevin released a 5-song EP, "Renegade" in 2015 and did an official video for the title track, which is amazing. His KZbin channel has videos going back to his college days, when he was experimenting with "celloboxing", beatboxing and playing the cello at the same time. (This video is not celloboxing because he is doing each element separately.) His channel also has various cello pieces, solo and with other musicians.
