The man is a racing legend. I was there for the transatlantic races at Brands Hatch. Cheered for him throughout the 500 GPs. Had a GSXR in Lucky Strike livery. Watched in awe as he was pulling wheelies everywhere at the GSXR day (Brands again) and finally got the chance to meet him at the Isle of Man Centenary year. He was a great influence in my life. Happy memories.

Never forget a gangly kid from Texas passing me on what I guess was a Yamaha 600 at Willow Springs in WERA 24 hour race in 1984 I think it was? Same race where he was "discovered". This kid went past, then right off the track in a cloud of dust, then back on and off again! I thought if he manages not to kill himself he might turn out to be good at roadracing. This was the same race where future World Endurance Champ Doug Toland was "discovered" - he was the fastest guy on the track at night riding a boxstock Honda VF500F.

I met Kevin at the very beginning of his career, in his first year riding for Yoshimura when he came to the AMA Superbike national at Seattle. Where I was a club racer. He didn’t look old enough to shave yet, but he was already very fast…

Okay, if he was born in ‘84 then that means he was TWO when he rode this race! What an achievement! But let’s get back to reality for a second. I watched him race a WERA event at Sears Point in 1984 or so. He wasn’t winning, but he was exciting to watch! Despite the somewhat ‘boring’ aspect of endurance racing, he rode as if every lap as if it was qualifying. Anyway, I could see that he was special. And in the next few years, he proved his talent again and again. His last race at Sears Point with Rainey in the AMA Superbike class before they headed to Europe was amazing! Kevin killed Rainey, winning by half-a-lap, while doing wheelies and entertaining the crowd. Kevin rode every lap like it was his last. Of course, it hurt his career numbers-wise, but he became a legend for it. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY entertained me as much as watching Kevin ride fast motorcycles.

The 500cc two-strikes had a throttle more like a light switch--they came on harshly. This was long before electronic aides--it was up to the rider to make peace with his bike. It was easy to crash back then due to the unruly nature of the power delivery.

Schwantz said the 1989 Suzuki 500 was his favorite bike, but he crashed to often and it was not as reliable as it could of been as the reasons he didn’t win the Championship that year.

I still have my FREE KEVIN T-shirt that is a testimony to the way that COTA banned him from the race track (that he helped to design) as the result of a lawsuit. They later made him the Grand Marshall after they realized how popular he is. COTA owners have no clue about motorcycle racing. They are just investors who want a return on their investment as quickly as possible.

One must always remember that Suzuki was not on the same tech level as Yamaha & Honda when looking at this era of Racing. I will say upfront that I’m a Texan and therefore am absolutely biased. As for Racing today, bring back 2 strokes and remove the electronic bandaids.
