i like the ground exercise. but the striking is wrong. thats a bolo punch a shortened left hook without the twisting leg and body kinetic connection. its just hand power like a street fighters punch slowed and hit a natural weak spot, I DOUBT YOU'D BE SO ACCURATE AT REALFIGHTING SPEED slow motion works for practice. only

Very informative thank you! Is it possible to use a wave strike if you let the arm move first like Bruce Lee advocated to avoid being telegraphic?

I've watched a few of Secour's interviews and seminars and he definitely seems like a well-learned man, with fantastic abilities. I do not doubt Systema's power and technique, but as a beginner martial artist I feel it necessary to voice a concern of my own. This is coming from a boxing/kickboxing perspective: Concerning the power of the "deep punches" themselves, I can't speak to or criticize. I've never hit anyone/thing in that method, nor have I been victim to a Systema punch. But (and this may just be a symptom of the demonstration vs. what the actual technique looks like in a real fight), the whip punch seems easily telegraphed to my eyes, as to opposed to the straight jabs and twisting hooks used by a skilled boxer. Does anyone here practice systema? Can you give me more detail on the function of the punches in a real fight (technique as a concept as demonstrated vs. finely honed and mastered attack)? Or direct me to another video to show these punches being used in faster succession? I know the last one may be very un-systema-like, but I'm deeply curious so if someone could help me please and thank you :)

the great thing about systema whip punches and just systema in general is it is all mean to be done while completely relaxed and calm and collected, that's was allows the punches to go so deep... the other thing I want to mention (which is what I think you were trying to get at) is that systema is very subtle... meaning the strikes come fast and you don't always see them coming which is why you may see some videos where people look confused and fall right down cause they are scared and don't understand what is happening... with normal boxing/kick boxing... you turn your body into the punch and use torque to whip your whole body which tenses up the body and lose energy and gives away your intention and the opponent can pick up on that intention and their brain will realize something is coming and try to brace for impact... with systema you want to give nothing away, they should never see the strike coming their brain cant react that fast if you don't tense up and show your intention before you strike the very subtle things make a difference

+Raiden4019 The jab is possibly the most biomechanically unnatural punch. The most natural one is probably a hammerfist either delivered straight down or down across the body; think of the way children punch. We use jabs because 1) they have the most range and 2) they are the nearest weapon to the closest target. The beauty of systema is that when you develop these concepts, you can apply them to a variety of things, including of course jabs and crosses. As for using these sort of strikes in fighting sports, Fedor used to prefer a knuckle down Slavic Hook and there's a lot of video of him using it in competition. The main weakness of systema is that it doesn't teach you to move and negotiate space the way that boxing does. Its main strength is that you can maximize your efficiency biomechanically in a variety of ways; for example, I don't even practice power for jabs, crosses, hooks and uppercuts anymore, since I got systema punching deep into my muscle memory. The jab is essentially a chain with a snap on the end just like the most looping whip punch. There are just much more constructive things to do with my time, like practicing footwork and slipping. You might be interested in the so-called 'trinity strike', or 'figure eights' in between jabs and crosses: jab, backhand, cross, or jab, backhand, hook, cross. Cheers

+orangeiceice12 Thank you for the reply, you brought up some excellent points. Although, I'm sure I agree with you regarding the naturalness of a straight punch. That one was most natural to me growing up, and It seemed to me the main reason why children did big slaps and hammer fists was because our parents all told us the same thing: "don't punch people!" So this was our work-around. It didn't work, we still got in trouble, but there was a perception in elementary school that a "hit" and a "punch" were two totally different things, and one would get you in less trouble than the other. Oftentimes, that was the case. Still, great examples and information, and I'll definitely look up the ones you suggested. Thanks!

I would say, just like anything, that usage is much shorter than practice. Train big, apply small. Big movements allow you to get more muscles and joints involved, so it leads to more development. Then when you shorten it, it will have more power than before

Raiden4019 I know this is an old comment but I'll answer anyway. The way he is demonstrating it is purely as a drill and it's intentionally being exaggerated so that the students can learn easier The more proficient one becomes in the movement the more sublte it becomes, the end goal is to make every strike as untelegraphed as possible
