I saw this show (with Spacey) in '98 at the Old Vic, which at the time was the last theater holding out against amplifying the actors artificially...the actors were expected to project and, knowing this, I read Spacey had given up smoking a whole year before the show to get his lung capacity back. Do wish I'd see this production since I spotted Giamatti almost immediately; he wasn't in the London production.

The American Film Theater had one of the best, if not the best cast ever for this play. Lee Marvin as Hickey, Robert Ryan as Larry Slade, and Fredric March as Harry Hope. Marvin had the best conception of Hickey. But the lead role is actually Slade. And I really don't think anyone could ever match or surpass Ryan in that part. He died shortly after. As did March. I still think that is the best film ever made of an O'Neill play.
@kennethwayne6857 Жыл бұрын
Almost forgot that the great Fredric March was reunited with Bradford Dillman in this. They created the roles of James and Edmund Tyrone in the original production of "Long Day's Journey into Night" seventeen years before.

I may be from the wilds of NJ, but I am an o'Neill aficionado since I read his plays as a HS senior. As they say he is our Shakespeare. I was fortunate enough to see Spacey's Iceman in 1999. He was fantastic. I also saw Robards and Dewhurst in the mid eighties performingb LDJN and Ah Wilderness (with the young George C Scott's son in them), they were glorious. There's a 1960 version with Robards that is very good. I'm 67 and will probably never see Spacey's version again. I would easily pay $100-200 for a copy of that 1999 show. The character of Hickey has 2 overwhelming parts. I think Spacey plays the early Iceman but Robards is very good at the darker parts.

It's possible Spacey may have pissed somebody off somewhere, especially if the Tonys are as rigged as they say the Oscars are.

The first production of Iceman got mixed reviews because they didn't have a really good Hickey. Jason Robards in the Jose Quintero production placed the play among the great roles in American theatre. Thenceforth, Robards was the 'gold standard' for any Hickey or anyone playing Jamie in Long Day's Journey.
@auroraspiderwoman58863 жыл бұрын
Spacey also played Jamie in "LDJ," in the Broadway revival with Jack Lemmon that was preserved for TV.
