Contrary to popular belief, in early stages of production, HOTR was being developed as a Model-CGI hybrid, but was canned when production started in September 2008, so it shifted to CGI. Interestingly, S12 Thomas was also used to promote HOTR.

We used to have wooden railway 2009 version of Kevin, my bro got it for Christmas 2010. We sadly lost it a few years later. I’m still hoping to find it laying around somewhere.

I have a theory about the 2009 Kevin. Maybe the reason why it’s so inaccurate is because it’s based on an early design for the character?

That could be very possible. Learning Curve Bertram was based off of his original design. He was supposed to be a tank engine but because of time and cost he couldn't have a new model made and so Duke was repainted dark brown and Smudgers face was used.

Kevin's quite underrated, because of his enthusiastic and bubbly personality, which describes people being excitable and young. Quite relatable in every way. plus, the way Kevin drops stuff, is due to him being based on a clumsy mobile crane (even when his energetic self rushes about) Kevin has gotten more depth in S17-19 and that's striking for how youngish and eager he is. Victor is also quite fatherly towards him.

I love the info on what his basis are, for being clumsy and cumbersome. Despite being a CGI Series character, He and Victor shouldn't feel out of place in the Classic Series and the North Western Railway.

For the crane arm of the first edition of Kevin, it's supposed to click into place so the arm won't obstruct the view of the face. Mine used to do that but over time it stopped working. It seems your first edition Kevin has the same issue.

take-n-play kevin is the best in my opinion, because it is almost identical to his cgi render and fits in really well with the 3 main merchandise ranges.

I have one Kevin model, the one that came out in 2009 that tied in with the DVD release of Hero of the Rails. In my opinion, the best Kevin model is the 2013 model, because that's the one that's the most accurate to his TV series counterpart.

2009 LC Wooden Railway Kevin: Complete disaster waiting to happen at the Sodor Steamworks, much to Victor's chagrin. 2013 Fisher Price Wooden Railway Kevin: The best wooden Kevin model IMO in terms of detail, face and proportions. Wood (Painted) Kevin: Given the few to no redeemable qualities about most of the wood products, whether unpainted or painted, the Wood Kevin looks pretty decent like the Wood (Painted) Devious Diesel.

Personally, I'd say Adventures did him best, mainly because the Adventures couplings are less clunky. However seeing as Take'n'Play and Adventures are relatively the same, then it probably makes no real difference.

Who needs a Triangular screwdriver! A same size flathead works just fine in triangle screws! I use one on my TM2 cars all the time (I love disassembling and reassembling cars) plus when I had to try and diagnose why my Steelworks Thomas stopped working (I never did find out why but fussing around must have done something because when I reassembled him thinking I had just gained a new stationary engine I flipped his switch and he worked!)

I actually just got Thomas wood victor and Kevin for Christmas from my parents. Honestly, they are both some of the best models in the wood range. I do like their wooden railway models better, but the wood ones aren’t that bad.

I personally think that the Mattel TWR Kevin is the best, the Wood Kevin sits way to high on the chassis, while it has yellow wheels, they are train wheels, not roadway wheels. The original is way too small, and the black line on the side of the wood piece that his face is attached to, is supposed to be the cab. The face is also way to big on the original TWR Kevin, it should be half the size it is so the non existent driver can see, as Kevin has never been seen with a driver, despite his cab being open. Nice review keep up the good work.

Can you do a episode called sodor’s busiest day. Sam was arriving from America on two ships and he will either steam on his own after being unloaded from the ship or be trucked to the works for a inspection for any broken parts on the trip. Victor was needing a spot in the works to put sam at. He will be working on goods trains from knapford yard to the docks. Boco will be working on goods trains from knapford to the mainland. Hiro was coming to sodor next week on the same ships

Take the second version of Kevin and paint his hub caps yellow, paint his little starter crank on his front bumper red, and maybe replace crane magnet with the hook style one from the first version. Kevin #2 and #3 have rounded magnets and in the show Kevin's always swinging stuff around in his hook so that would work too. Kevin #1 is certainly and interesting looking model but not a very good rendition of Kevin, an appropriately raw looking prototype if anything. He'd make a great basis for a custom though. Swap his tires for train wheels and pop his block off (that sounded bad, lol) and you'll have a detailed crane arm on a flat bed, I would use him as a narrow gauge breakdown train.

While the 2013 Kevin definitely is the best out of the three, I can't look past those honking front wheels. If they were smaller, I'd definitely be more on board with his model. Aside from that, it's clearly the best one. I do like 2009 Kevin's face a lot though. It has a lot of charm to it, but it's certainly not fitting of his character. I'm enjoying these reviews and it's nice to get some perspective on different varieties models

Great discussion. Personally I don’t see Kevin as really a pointless character as we kinda need characters who can lighten the mood and entertain like Kevin can. He’s definitely one for rather humorous moments. It is crazy how radically different his models are. The Wood one is wack and I have the first Kevin and it’s pretty bad as well. The 2013 Mattel version is a clear winner for sure.
