I only just noticed, listening to this, that the last "wonderful giants" is the same lick as "angel of music" from phantom!

The last “there are giants in the sky” Is a realization. That cord after the lyrics “after the sky” is a realization that he is realizing holy shit there were giants in the sky

I’ve listened to this song for probably a hundred times already but never really felt the emotions in the music until this video. This and all your ‘breaking down the score’ videos really add another dimension of listening for me! This was brilliant! Thank you! Have a great day, Kevin! :)

This song really helped me to truly understand Sondheim’s genius musical and lyrical skills. This and No One is Alone are tied with being my favorite songs from Into the Woods.

I have taught this sing so many times just because it really gets the singer to use their imagination and interpreting skills working overtime. Plus, it's an awesome song to hear hour after hour!

I found your channel 2 years ago and ever since then you have indirectly shaped my development as a musician. I’m going to study at Loyola New Orleans as a Bass-Baritone this coming fall, and while my musical focus has shifted more towards opera and oratorio I will always have a place in my heart for Bway (and especially Sondheim). Your insight into many of the core fundamentals of the music and lyricism you enjoy so much is just so inspiring to me, so thank you!

At the beginning, you say that the high chords represent the sky and the low chords represent footsteps. I disagree with you. Though I see your point, I think for that to be the case, the word sky wouldn't be sung over the low chord. I feel like Sondheim has used the high chords to represent Jack's innocence and his adventurous nature, and the low chords to show the sinister nature of the world he is exploring, bringing him back down to earth. The juxtaposition of him singing the word sky, something high up, over low notes, I think, is to show Jack is learning about the dangers of life and to be more cautious. The reason the first low chord comes a bit after he sings the word sky is because he is still relishing the memory of exploring the new kingdom before remembering about the terror he experienced when he thought the giant was going to eat him. That's my interpretation, at least. I don't really see those chords as representing specific things, but more as representing concepts because I don't think there is a strong enough link between the music and the words at that point.

I'm kind of concerned about your physical health kevin- worried about you since you seem to have gained some weight very very quickly- idk if my perception that your weight gain happened alarmingly fast over a short few years is wrong but if I am please correct me!! Love and concern, -Cat
