I kinda feel like Be More Chill would be so much more likeable if it was a Starkid show or something, because then it would have that necessary level of self-awareness and underlying parody kind of vibe that would give it more charm, rather than what it is now in thinking it's this huge deeply touching show that deals with important issues etc etc. Like, Starkid knows that everything they do is stupid and ridiculous and that's what makes them great, and I think perhaps BMC takes itself too seriously and could be way more appealing if it would just,,,be more chill (ha.ha.)

I can see that. A bit more ribbing at the source material and plot, and increase the humour rather than try to play it as a mostly dramatic work. It worked a little better when it was this small show in New Jersey rather than in New York, where they made changes that didn't quite hit as hard.

That’s so the problem with a lot of teen musicals to me. When there’s no sense of irony, it feels like a bad melodrama. I agree 100% on the Theatre Etiquette disappearing. I went to see BMC in April this year and the audience screamed at the girl’s high notes too like PLEASE I CAN’T HEAR HER SINGING. Same with Michael in the bathroom: everybody SCREAMING at his high notes like why can’t we all just shut up and enjoy the performance rather than drowning a sustained note with shrieking and wooing? It really bothers me.

I kinda think theater etiquette might be getting ruined because of the NBC shows like Jesus Christ Super Star and Rent, because they featured a crowd that acted like they were at a concert and were SO ANNOYING. But especially if the audience is so young, they may have very little experience to understand how to behave besides seeing those shows on TV so they assume it’s alright

i really, really, really didn’t like this show. i did enjoy the original, though. with the original bmc, it’s not serious. it’s fun and cute and it doesn’t take itself too seriously so you don’t have to either. the performers are good, the songs are basic but nice, and it just is a fun little show with some good jokes and good preformances. was it original? no. but it owned that and poked at it own cliches. but i really don’t like the broadway version. they take themselves very seriously and while the preformances are good, it isn’t original, and it is not as deep, emotional, and innovative as the show thinks it is and that kind of ruined it for me. but that’s my two cents.

My issues with the music notwithstanding, it pisses me off that Jeremy gets the girl in the end. He and Christine have nothing in common, no chemistry. She didn't care if he existed or not before the Squip. Meanwhile Brook showed interest in Jeremy from the beginning and he just dumps her the second Christine's bf is out of the picture. Honestly, Jeremy isn't a hero or even an anti-hero, he's the anti-villain; we're supposed to root for him only because he's less evil than the AI in his head.
@KevinLynchNJ5 жыл бұрын
The book is poorly written. Like the black guy who somehow magically falls in love with Christine after seeing her in a play the year before... and then somehow doesn't have feelings for her anymore out of the blue? I mean, the story line and character arcs are quite weak and very cookie cutter.

Kevin in the closet should be a real song. just a real gay version of Micheal in the bathroom. lol I totally agree with you on this show. To be honest, I liked the original off-broadway version more. I didn't like any of the changes in the broadway. it was too campy than it was already, too bright and yes I can see that this was for a specific demographic. Also the fact that they wanted to make this version more DEH which is probably why they wrote that unnecessary song, Loser geek whatever and the costume you mentioned as well was changed to make him look like Evan. The changes kinda ruined the show which is why I dislike this show. And what you said about the actor losing his voice, that was a problem I had too. The biggest and stupidest problem about the broadway version is everyone in the show including him, sings and speaks higher than the off-broadway which is weird and you can tell from both cast recordings. And what's stupid is they changed the keys higher for the same damn actors which makes no sense. I definitely dislike the Jeremy they have. I prefered the original Jeremy.

Here's an explanation of The Pants Song: it's definitely meant to be allegorical. Taking it at surface level, one might say that it's just an unnecessary song about Jeremy's dad buying some pants, which is from a joke that one might see on surface level to be just some bland "lmao pantless" humor. On closer inspection, you start to notice something: he's also putting on the metaphorical pants of the household and stepping into his role of being a good father to Jeremy, something he failed at doing prior.

It makes me so mad about what theater etiquette is turning into. That's my biggest complaint about modern day theater. I'm glad that the theater where I live people are respectful when seeing a show, and only make noise at time's when appropriate. And there isn't any screaming except for maybe when something that has everyone dying with laughter happens. And even then, it's a maybe. It make's me mad to hear all the disrespect that's happening in Broadway shows. I've even seen people brush it off or encourage it! Especially with shows like Frozen where they say "it's for kids" and I don't know how you feel about the show but like some people actually want to go and see the show, not listen to people and kids scream the whole time. I know Be More Chill ever since they've revived it has had these problems with bad audiences. Make's me so mad, especially since I really like the show. Well I like the original off Broadway version than the Broadway one there is now but still. It's just disrespectful to everyone who is in or has worked on the show in my opinion. Sorry, I went on a rant there but I think it needed to be said lol

I actually like the Broadway production better than the New Jersey one, mostly because it seems more accurate to the modern high school experience (in New York at least), and I like the casting. I think theatre etiquette isn’t disappearing, but i noticed that shows that tend to pull in audiences who don’t usually enjoy musicals tend to have more disruptive audiences. Most Disney productions have that problem, and when I went to see Hamilton I was seated next to people who where talking through parts of the show and it’s super frustrating.

I actually saw the show when it was still in previews, my first Broadway show and first time in NYC. And although I was hyped up about the show, I have to agree with most of your comments about it. I was in the balcony, practically as far in the back row as I can get while still in the center, and I also got blinded by the lights. Those things spun around, and it was hard to ignore them while watching the stage. Kind of funny you mentioned Dear Evan Hanson, since the lead (Jeremy) was the original Jared Kleinman for that show. I thought that was the angle you were going for until you mentioned the striped shirt. Finally, although I am a fan of the BMC show (who is well over 30), I have the hot take that I think "Michael in the Bathroom" is actually my least favourite in the show. I'm not sure if it's because I'm a contrarian and everyone raves over it, or I just don't like it for reasons I can't articulate, but it's definitely low on my list. Not to say it's a bad song, but it just doesn't speak to me the way it seems to speak to many. I actually heard a story that George Salazar (the guy who played Michael in the original show and on/off Broadway) actually elected to raise the register of the song. If he's been on rest because of it, clearly that was a poor decision.

I’ve seen the show off broadway and in February during previews and I prefer the off broadway run. Off broadway had the lyrics for pitiful children changed, guy that I’d kinda be into reprise was there, and loser geek whatever too. It felt more like the material and show spoke for itself. The costumes and sets are great and fancy now, but I feel like they tried to upscale too much and ended up missing what made the show special. To me, that’s how the characters interacted and the way Jason Tam as the SQUIP controlled Jeremy. The way Jeremy broke free from the SQUIP was more powerful off broadway. Jeremy and the SQUIPS dynamic was more powerful off broadway. On broadway, Sync up feels underdeveloped, upgrade feels like it started to come up with something new but never fully made it there, and the play scene was shortened and that’s the biggest tragedy. The final play scene needed, if anything, to be longer. I wanted to expand on what much of the original cast did and what I saw off broadway but they cut stuff out and then changed some of it. I wanted more interaction from Micheal and Jeremy, I wanted more SQUIP interference, I wanted to feel the conflict more and that things could really go bad if Jeremy and Michael failed to shut off the SQUIPS plan for taking over the school. Sure, it’s a small level plan but you could easily broaden the event to happening at your college, place of work, a whole community, and imagine the fallout. I feel like they spent a lot of money on fancy costumes and crazy sets but the show never really needed that in the first place. Were they cool and neat to look at? Absolutely. Did I still like the production value of the off broadway show just as much? Yes, and I liked it better. I feel like they didn’t need to change much going from off broadway to broadway but they made a lot of changes in direction that feel unfinished. The actors and understudies/swings are great at what they do and that’s the real reason I’ve stuck with and enjoyed the show. The entire show community’s presence on social media, from the band, stage managers, and cast really boost my respect for the show. You can feel the love they all have for it. While it’s not perfect by any means, it resonates with a lot of people. while I don’t personally experience a lot of what the characters experience in the show, a younger version of me could really be feeling, relating, and sympathizing with many of the characters. In a way it’s nostalgia for my emotions and why I’m glad my high school years are far behind me.

This is super late lmao, your video came up on my page again but For me I would love it if the ending scene reveals the whole musical was for Christine (like how the book was a book for christine) And it would make sense with all of the bright and child like costumes throughout the show so in the last scene it shows them in normal high school clothes, and how high schoolers would act. Jeremy tells christine about the squip, apologies for it, and shows her the script of a musical he wrote, called be more chill, since she loves musicals, And the ending for vocies in my head it's more of a talking, slowed down version, instrumental duet with Christine and jeremy like they're reading off the script, and maybe in the end of that song they morph back into the musical with the other characters in bright costumes again dancing around Jeremy and Christine. She still never gets with him, only forgives him and they do become really good friends though. Idk to me that seems like a better ending and more fitting and like a thank you to the Ned (author of the book)

I'd say just read the book. The musical completely butchers the entire story and the book isnt a predictable mess. Also I dont know where they got the idea for Jeremy's dad, in the book the character is completely different. Jeremy's personality gets a rework on the musical, the book has more realistic characters. Honestly it just doesnt work when they actually make the squip a villain when there wasmt a "villain" inthe novel. If you want to actually enjoy the story (cause it's a great concept) just read the novel. That's my recommendation.

@@januaryembers1146 Exactly it didnt need a villain. The story is better without some big antagonist or final battle. Like the fact that she literally says she wants to date him but he humiliated her so it would never happen is such a good ending, especially compared to the whole bullshit of the musical.

In my opinion the off-broadway show was way better. I mean, it basically had the exact same plot but the broadway version kind of butchers some of the meaning. The off-broadway version is a lot simpler, Squip is WAY better(no offense Jason Tam) and NOT OVERLY EXTRA. Off-Broadway just seemed better to me.

I saw it off broadway, and their were two girls who WOULDNT STOP SQUEELING every time George Salazar came on stage.

Honestly i'm kinda "meh" about BMC. The music and story is "it's ok i guess", but the fandom is not helping me like it..

What I love about Bare a pop opera and Spring Awakening is that they actually don't fall into this teen bs trap. They're not using these tired "jock" "nerd" popular girl" tropes that seems to be in every teen musical nowadays.

Bare actually discusses some of these stereotypes in a really smart way... Ivy being the "hot" girl but actually being a well-rounded individual, same with popular Jason etc...

I'm late to the party. I've been super critical of this show for a very long time and each time I explain my frustrations to my friends they tell me that it'll all change when I watch it, I tried to watch it a year ago and couldn't finish it because I was too bored. I tried again today when I saw a recording on KZbin. (I kind of cheated because I skipped through most of the songs, but I already know most of them. Sue me.) My biggest problem with BMC is that the lyrics and dialogue all sound like 40 year old men pretending to be teenagers over the internet. For a show that's trying so hard to be aimed at the youth, it's wildly out of touch socially. It would make sense if that was only true of Jeremy, because the whole problem is that he has trouble with social queues, but it's every single character. None of them feel like genuine people even when the actors are doing their best, because the words just don't sound natural. The score itself I enjoyed, like you pointed out the Theremin is dope, There's a decent amount of rounds which I'm just a sucker for and have no clue why. Some really striking guitar riffs here and there. Not a ton of interesting harmony, but I don't really need it to teach me new progressions, I just need it to sound nice. The plot was weird, which I would normally overlook, but I found every new dialogue interaction between songs I kept asking myself why they keep introducing new "lore" driven ideas. Just general dumb shit like "I am going to create a neural network of all the kids in the school because I am evil robot man" just felt like the writers inserting a plot point on their middle school Hero's Journey project. I'm not gonna comment on production because the BL I watched was clearly some small community theatre. For what it's worth, they did well with what they had, but ultimately it doesn't matter because every production is going to be different, and if I didn't like something it could very easily be changed. I still don't like BMC, and still have no clue why people do, but there is a glimmer of a show I would actually enjoy somewhere in there. If you don't speak English I imagine it must be great.

I love old musicals but recently they just don’t feel the same. They all sound the same and they’re all trying to make a change or a breakthrough in society and they keep getting shut down. Everything has already been done so trying to make a new sound is hard. It makes me scared for the future of broadway, we won’t ever get the same feel that we all love with the older shows to the ones now.

i got free tickets and saw it too, i wanted to leave at intermission i hated it so much. i think the actors did great with the material like you said but the material itself is soooo polarized in the high school sucks end of the spectrum and it’s very whiny. i find no reason to root for the main character because he never made a good decision, i don’t like christine, and the use of the mean girl the beat friend the jock etc so typical and boring. i don’t want to see a show full of characters i want to see real people. michael comes the closest but i would never voluntarily see this show again and we need better shows on broadway sorry bout it

I saw BMC when it premiered in Chicago and this show (like others about HS) aren’t geared for high schoolers or anyone over the age 18. These shows are for kids in junior high and younger who’s only perception of high school is High School Musical. I only liked two songs from this show but really enjoyed the production value. Not a show for me

Miranda Rispoli That’s so true. When I first listened to the show my first thought was “are all the characters supposed to be freshman. Only freshmen act like-“ “No?” “SIGH....”

I'm 18 and I've liked the songs that I've heard from the show so far, but the psychotic fanbase is just so off putting. From the way that they talk about how every character NEEDS to identify as LGBT+, to talking about Michael like he's their God or something.

I will be honest since it came out I am starting to like it less and less. Loved it when i was 14 but now I am 17 and starting to see it as less appealing. I still love the character of christen mainly because I relate but apart from 1 or 2 songs I cannot say it is my fsvirout anymore
