As a 15 year old beginner artist, who funny enough, has been drawing their whole life, this was the first time I was ever proud of a face a drew, as I drew along with your instructions. I'm just being to take art seriously and I'm really trying to learn, and the way you explained and showed, especially with the skull, was extremely helpful. I really, really appreciate the detailed insight and explanation into it, you've really helped me out and have been a huge part of the beginning of my real art journey.

If you ever do a part 2 to this, I think it would be awesome to go over in more detail constructing the side plane of the face in various angles. I know that is one thing I struggle with, determining the side plane as the head rotates. Also a video on the more extreme angles would be amazing if you ever get to it. You're a great teacher and I'd love to see more videos like this one. If I could give stars to a youtube video youd get all of them! You could certainly start with cube or a block like Bridgeman taught and then modify that and round it off. Then build it into a head. Since the is closer to a ovoid than a box Reilly and Loomis had students develop the head from the Sphere. Either method is very effective.

WHOOHOO! I understand this now. For anyone out there struggling.. keep trying. It comes eventually after watching video over and over and over. Now off to 100 heads today. Want to ask you a question. Why do many portait artists start with the eyes first? Is that because that brow line area is the key to all other perpective..or is it for another reason? My friend did a tutorial that based all measurements on nose length/ width and angles from the nose. I am sure if you do it correctly it will work too, but just want to know the difference.The nose first tutorial was a front view.
@KevinMcCainStudios3 жыл бұрын
Hello Lisa, I am glad that you enjoyed the videos. The artists usually start with eyes because classically the head is measured in eye spaces. Now you can start anywhere on the head. In college they used to challenge us by starting to draw a head by starting with the ear and using that as the landmark to draw the head. However starting with the eyes is the easiest. Enjoy and keep on drawing.
@triplemoon693 жыл бұрын
for me i start there cause it gives a good starting point plus if you do the ears first its the same thing good starting point that leads to the drawing

De nada.
@nailbomb4207 ай бұрын
The one thing that confuses me a little is that the head is in perspective, so the thirds shouldn't be in parallel, but rather should have a slight convergence? Or do you say they are parallel because they're so close together that you would only see them converging in the most extreme perspective?
@KevinMcCainStudios7 ай бұрын
Technically, they would be converging, but depending on the view. Many times, the convergences can be so soft that they are for all intents and purposes parallel. If you use convergences when drawing the head, it takes on a caricature look.

only thing i don't get.. if the head is tilted (for example at 58:00) then the diagonal in the oval will not be in the same place anymore so then the proportions won't add up anymore (where the eyebrows should be, and the hairline, and nose), right? or do you just have to eye/guesstimate that when the head is tilted? thank you for the very awesome explanation btw!
@KevinMcCainStudios3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question that you've asked. I didn't want to load up people with too much information in the first video. You are correct as the head tilts up or down it starts to go into perspective and even severe perspective. And this case the perspective would affect the thirds. Most people will guess the divisions in perspective. Others will create a plane to then divide into thirds in perspective. I am developing a video to show this but I probably won't be up for a couple of months.

Thank you for this video! My question is how do you know how wide to make the side of the head oval? I get the system for how to get its height but not the width. Is there some sort of simple guide to know for 3/4 or anything in between (besides profile which is just a center position circle at that point)

The ellipse marks where the eye cavity ends. The edge before the plane turns and becomes the temple bone. The front view uses about a 10 degree to 15 degree ellipse. As the head turns the ellipse widens until you arrive at the 90 degree circle. The best way to get a feel for it is to draw at least 50 to 100 Loomis heads over 3 months. About ten heads a week. Drawing from photos of people in different variations of the 3/4 view will help you develop the feel to create the correct opening of the ellipse. You will probably enjoy this video it show 5 view between true profile and true front view. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqfJoX-id9Jrr5I
