I demonstrate how use Reilly Method and Reilly Rhythms to develop the Reilly head in a 3/4 view. I wish I could work in the Word Reilly one more time.

This is amazing, At first I was looking for quick 10-minute videos on Reilly videos and saw this. "Huh, that's 1 hour long" But I started watching and got engrossed for the entire video, time just flew by. The clarity of your explanations and extra tips are top notch.

I remember being taught in school that the eyes are half way down the head....nose half way between eyes and chin...mouth half way between nose and chin but in top half. However, a lot of current artists online set up the face as follows....eyes half way down the head + mark in eyebrows....nose half way between eye brow and chin...mouth half way between nose and chin but in top half. So the major difference is the nose part being half way between eye brow and chin and not half way between eyes and chin. Which is correct?
@KevinMcCainStudios
@KevinMcCainStudios 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting. There are the 2 different approaches for the head. Loomis and Reilly or the 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 method you were taught. There are other variants of these nut basically you are dividing the head into thirds or divisions of halves. With Reilly and Loomis the brow is halfway for the circular cranial mass but you then add the chin so the brow doesn't end up being at the halfway point. For the brow method the halfway point marks the bottom of the ball of the nose not the bottom of the septum. The head divided in halves the nose is the bottom of the septum. So the landmarks for each method are different and you can overlay the halves method and the thirds method to fill in the other landmarks. Always remember the whichever method you use these are only a guide and that everyone's face will vary slightly from these methods. I hope that helps.

@@KevinMcCainStudios Splitting the head into thirds, that makes the nose area fall roughly halfway between the brow and chin, correct?

@@strengtholdschool by the time you add the septum to the nose it about halfway between the eyes and chin.

@@KevinMcCainStudios I appreciate the response but I'm still confused. So if the nose as you say sits roughly half way between the eyes and the chin then the method I use... Eyes half way between top and bottom of head...nose half way between eyes and chin and mouth half way ( in top section) between nose and chin is correct? For the record I find the Reilly method etc complicated as I like to keep things very simple.

Great video/ drawing. I followed step-by-step and it got pretty confusing at the mouth and some things with the eyes. The mouth in my drawing looks very strange. It does not look like a three-quarter. I’m not sure why? I was very careful to listen and watch everything you did so I don’t know if I made a mistake or not.

Thank you for watching. I appreciate your comment. In general mouths in a 3/4 view can be difficult because of the foreshortening. The also have to relate to the centerline especially the lips or it won't look right. I have a video on drawing mouths the basic concepts to be aware of, here is the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqHYk6R-dsyjkLc

Loomis method is powerful yet very simple to apply. Every time someone mention Reily he mention Loomis but not the opposite. I find the Reily method uncomfortable to draw by it portraits unlike the Loomis method. you can find here on KZbin a lot of people drawing various portraits by Loomis method but not by Reily. only the basic plate as you did. So i guess here is a challenge, if you will except. Good video, as usual.
@KevinMcCainStudios

Thank you for the comment. I appreciate your thoughts on the video. The reason for peopĺe mentioning you hear Reilly and Loomis is except for the rhythm lines they are very much the same with only very small variances. Most people who use Reilly don't go to through and formally draw the rhythm lines they envision the rhythms as they draw. The other thing is Loomis published 5 books on his thinking and methods. Reilly did not publish at all but rather trained he trained so many professional artists in his time that his methods have been passed down. Bottom line use whichever method works the best for you when you draw.
@KevinMcCainStudios
@KevinMcCainStudios 3 жыл бұрын
The reason to bring up Reilly is that the rhythms indicate architectures of the head that needs to be identified and addressed no matter what approach you use. When i was in college I was trained in either Loomis or Reilly just straight construction techniques using the foundations of Bridgeman. That and hundreds of hours examining and drawing the skull. You arrive at the same place using those methods. However in my opinion Loomis and Reilly used in unison help someone to improve more quickly than how I was taught. Which is why I teach them to students.
@Ron-wf1tt
@Ron-wf1tt 3 жыл бұрын
@@KevinMcCainStudios i can understand that, and in general knowledge is power, but when you come to practical aspect the reily method, for me, is very difficult to draw by. anyway you did mention the fact that Reily didn't publish a thing so maybe, if he had we would be smarter today. and one last thing, Loomis also have the same complex grid line of the face just as Reily (plate 9, Drawing the head book). only he do that in 'square' lines.
@KevinMcCainStudios
