I’ve cold started three Mr Heaters with a 20lb propane tank. I always thought pushing the control knob down in the pilot position and holding it would bleed the line. Interesting. I've a Mr Buddy myself. Mines the smaller one. I've had it 5 1/2 years with no problems. I'd recommend looking at and inspecting ALL gaskets and mounting surfaces before hooking up. Even new stuff can be defective. If and when you change propane tanks, check that the O ring gasket is good and properly seated on hose end, look too in propane tank mounting area for debris and that its gasket is proper. When I turn mine off, I turn off propane tank and let flame die out, then turn off Mr Buddy. This makes sure no gas is in the line. When starting, I turn on propane tank a 1/4 turn, put my Mr Buddy nob to pilot, press down and hold for 10 seconds, release, then hit again and it lights. I turn it to lowest setting first, this allows it to heat more slowly before going to the high setting. Mine only has low and high. It shouldn't take 15 minutes, especially when new, as it ages, periodically vacuum by the igniter, and also the front heat source while it's off AND cool. I use mine a lot. Very nice unit.

@brucehirsch54373 жыл бұрын
@@jaysmokey Why? When all you need to check your connections is soapy water in a spray bottle. That's how all the people in my field do it. Because we have the search area narrowed down to the connections we just made. Now if you're looking for a leak and you don't know where it could be from then sure, break out the electronic sniffer. But you know what they do once they narrow it down with the electronic sniffer? They break out the soapy water in a spray bottle to pin point and confirm the exact spot of the leak.

I saw a suggestion that having the Mr. Buddy elevated above the 20 lb propane tank will make for a faster purging of the line on first startup. The theory is that propane is heavier than air so the air will stay on top of the propane as it is vented. If the heater and tank on the same level the propane and air kind of mix equally and it takes longer to get a pure propane stream to ignite the pilot.

The Buddy Heater worked great with the 1lb Cylinders, but the Tank and Hose were a no go. The same tank and hose worked great with a Coleman stove. No need to bleed the line. I’ve never used a 20lb propane tank in my life but our furnace is dying and it’s freezing in the house, the 1lb propane cylinders keep selling out and are so expensive, the fireplace doesn’t do diddlysquat to warm up the house. I was nervous about a gas leaks but I followed your video step by step so I’m confident I’ve done the safety checks, and I’m finally able to warm up the house when it drops below 30degrees outside. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I know you have the 20lb tank already, but you can get an adapter to refill the 1lb bottles with the 20lb tank for much, much cheaper than buying new ones, just in case you have other uses for the bottles

I noticed that the hose is the old style for old tanks but will work on the new tanks as well. Will also work on 100 lb bottles as well also. They sell these hoses at Walmart as well. I never tried a hose on mine. I have the two tank model. I bought mine to kill bed bugs which i dont recommend because you are using the heater unattended and indoors. Im glad i didn't need to use that heater for my intended use they finally all died. I hope and dont wish that on my worst enemy. 73

Kevin - your videos have helped me many times. (Runaway battery bolt down, Runaway window sun shade install, and more.) I am planning my first winter camping trip in January and already have a Mr Buddy heater. Your video explains the easy way to use a 20# tank. Thank you for that! I have watched several videos that tried to show viewers the same thing, but they do not seem safe or offer the details that your video shows. Well done my friend! Keep the great videos coming. you can get a hose that does not require a filter by using part # F271803, it's a 12' hose, or F273704 for a 10' hose. F273702 & F272699 for a 12' and filter; or F273701 and F273699 for a 5' hose and filter

After opening up the valve on the tank to the heater you need to wait a bit for the hose to fill up. After done, just turn off the valve on tank and let the heater go out on it's own. Takes about two minutes or sonto burn off gas in the hose.

A better way to leak check the gas fitting, is to simply use a small bowl partially filled with about 1/4 cup of water then put several drops of Dawn liquid soap into the water and gently stir the mixture with a small spoon until it's mixed without creating any bubbles then spread the mixture over the fitting with a small 1 inch brush... If there are any leaks, bubbles will appear from the smooth mixture so you can see exactly where it's leaking.
@stephenhiggins86502 жыл бұрын
If you use bubbles to check for leaks you will not see new bubbles. The soap is to help it "stick to the threads then if it leaks bubbles will form. Great comment!

Use a long nose lighter (Bic/Scripto/etc) to assist with lighting it, while in the pilot mode hold it there till there is a flame, then and only then turn it to low..if you don't see the burner light up turn it off and start over. Mine has been used so much that it is impossible to light it any other way. Never allow it to flow gas when it is not lit, there is a sensor that will not allow gas to flow if the pilot is not burning. Expect to do maintenance on it about every 100 hours of use, propane will build up an oily substance in the aluminum fuel tubes inside of it, you'll need to remove them and blow them out and flush with naphtha or Coleman camp fuel to get it out. It isn't easy to do, and if you do this you'll realize the manufacture designed it that way so you'll just throw it away and buy a new one. You have to take everything apart in order to access the aluminum tubes..I'd buy another brand if there were any. I have found the filters to be ineffective at preventing oily build up, so I quit using them.

Your video was great for giving first time users the confidence to use their heater but . . . three (3) rapid clicks and the heater will light every time. What happens when one depresses the button and clicks is a small, metered amount of gas is emitted and the spark will attempt to light the gas. Three (3) clicks will build enough metered amounts of gas to allow for a successful ignition. A few more may be needed. Holding the button down will not allow more gas to escape. This would allow a dangerous buildup of gas. Do hold the button down for a few seconds to allow the thermocouple to get hot. Release the button for a few more seconds and then slightly depress and turn to desired selection to ignite burner. Make sure button is locked in desired position and is not left in between two (2) different selections. Enjoy the warmth. These heaters are awesome.

Kevin. There's a problem with what you're recommending. The hose that your showing in your video will cause a problem after sometime even though it is a Mr. Heater hose. The filter will later clog and pass into the heater. Instead it's recommended by Mr. Heater to use the new style 10foot hose that doesn't require a filter.

Yes, indeed this does help me. I am a lady trying to navigate through this process and all this certainly does give me more knowledge and definitely more peace of mind. I am currently using the small bottles with my Mr. Heater. Have a carbon monoxide/gas detector. I got another 2 tank Mr. Buddy and it was a failure. It leaked so it had to be returned got another single bottle just like the one I had and it's good.
@Grabfma0405082 жыл бұрын
So how is your mr. Buddy working for you now ? Any problems ?
@jshepard15211 ай бұрын
The Buddy heater is unlikely to produce carbon monoxide. The real danger of a Buddy heater is that any device that burns can exhaust all the oxygen from an enclosed space. It's unlikely, but possible, and I would not trust my life to a $2 oxygen cutoff sensor. Just make sure you have some ventilation for a bit of fresh air to come in.

I believe there has been an update to the Amazon listing. Now they recommend using their 10' hose assembly (F273704) which does NOT require the filter. Apparently, when this video was made and using the F273701 hose that hose was made with oils in the rubber that can leach out under pressure. Hence, the need for a filter so the oil doesn't gum up the internals of the Big Buddy heater. The new hose (F273704) is made without oil so there is nothing to leach out and cause problems with the Big Buddy. Is this correct?
@dorothyclemmer50993 жыл бұрын
I put that code into Amazon and many hoses were presented. Can't seem to find the correct one. And why a 10 foot hose?
@patricksnead65463 жыл бұрын
Yep! That's what I did too. The 10' hose lets me move the heater away from the tank. I can't remember but they say the type of hose allows you to not have to use a filter. Mine is the older heater with the fan. I love that option. And of course I have a carbon monoxide meter handy. The only time it went off was when the tank was almost empty and the pressure was low and caused insufficient buen.
@STBRetired13 жыл бұрын
@@patricksnead6546 That's interesting you mention that your heater has a fan and it is an older model. Seems like I've seen other comments about them not putting a fan in their heaters anymore. But, I just bought my heater a month ago at the local Lowes and it does have the fan. I wouldn't think Lowes has such old stock around but maybe they do. Or, maybe Big Buddy changed their mind and started putting fans back into their heaters after public demand.

If you want it to light quicker just purge the line before attaching it. Attach line to 20lb tank and open valve, depress the valve in the end of the hose that attaches to the heater and in about 2 seconds the line will be purged of air. Attach it to the heater and she is ready to light.
