Chestnuts! I had chestnuts and chestnut flavored things for the first time when I went to Japan, and I really liked it. I had to look up how to say 胴枯病 to explain what happened to the American Chestnut. I also had persimmons for the first time in Japan! I loved them too. Trader Joe's apparently has them! And the local Japanese grocery store too. You can definitely get daikon and lotus root in America, but maybe only at Asian grocery stores. Kevin we have gyoza! More likely to see them at a Japanese restaurant than a Chinese one though.

I hadn’t heard about the blight that wiped out most of the American chestnut trees so I looked it up and apparently in this article they mention that Japanese chestnut trees which are resistant to the blight brought it over and it spread through the American chestnut trees. There are groups dedicated to finding surviving trees and cross breeding then with Chinese blight resistant ones to try to bring them back as well as another group attempting to genetically modify chestnut trees with the blight resistant gene from wheat. Will be interesting to see if they achieve any success.

I see daikon, Japanese yam, persimmon in local grocery stores in Canada! I guess it really depends on the city and area.

Yes about Gyoza, Cheese Cake Factory has "pot stickers".

@@kiy2347 probably depends on the city’s Asian population since many people will not buy foods they’re not familiar with. In some Safeway supermarkets in San Francisco, I see the same thing.
