Unless you're a serious advanced daily-user of MS office for business or professional purposes, then I recommend Office 2021. It's not really outdated and you're not missing out on many features by not having 365.

Thanks for this. But there were two items that you pointed out that were misleading. The MS 365 Family account allows up to 6 people and a total of 6TBs. But each person can only access 1TB each. So it's wrong to say that you can access 6TB in your account. Also, each person can only use it for up to 5 devices, not 30 devices.

You can create a second Microsoft Account for yourself and then share folders of the 1TB Onedrive with your regular account to get 2TB, or more if you create more accounts for yourself... I know, sort of janky, but possible...

@@rbutschle I completely understand what you're saying. But it wasn't actually what my original comment was for. It was just to point out the inaccuracies with what Kevin stated in his video. I use Koofr for that as it has better integration with these other storage tools.

I'm still using Office 2016, a one-time offer for Home edition. Given the rather basic use of my personal computer I don't need all the extra features. It's nice to see updates, but the price aspect is more in favour of 1 time payment vs.subscription. In the end it all comes down to which specific tasks you do and/or how much time you spend working on the computer.

Kevin, as always, you're a wonderful resource and a fount of information - thank you for all you do! One factor I could see a benefit in adding to this video or a supplemental video is including information on "Work use" vs. "Home use". Meaning answering the question: "Do I need to have a subscription if my employer provides Microsoft Office already?" And then talking about the pros/cons of still having a personal subscription/copy, separate from a work-access version. Also in this video, I lost track of when you were talking about the benefits of subscription vs. Office 2021. Perhaps having text on the screen that reads "Microsoft 365" and "Office 2021" when you're talking about pros/cons for each. Visual indicators are a big help to me, and may be for others. A comparison chart of both would be helpful, too. Thanks again - you're great!

You pay for less than 2 persons with family. And you can use multiple accounts for yourself. I like the family as it is. When you devide it between your family, your parents and inlaws it's cheaper than when they would offer a family of 3 for like 85 a year ...
@PGHammer21A
@PGHammer21A 2 жыл бұрын
It makes sense if you have less than four devices and are just one person. Why? Microsoft 365 covers five devices, they don't all have to be all-Windows, it covers non-PCs (not merely non-Windows hardware) and is all of $70USD per year. Also included is one terabyte of cloud storage. I use it among my desktop, notebook and smartphone (which runs Android).

The only difference in the past installations from the installations of today is the method. The old methods were downloading the software from diskettes, and then from digital discs, whether they be CDs, CD-R, CD-RW, even DVD-R, DVD-RW, depending on the type of media disc. Today's method of installation calls for the computer that is connected to the Internet. The software is available on the website. Software manufacturers do not care to download software on to discs anymore, let alone buy the blank discs. This practice would lead to paying more just for the software.

You forgot several things. Office 2021 also comes in the Professional edition, which includes Publisher and Access, there's no need to get 365 for these apps. The Microsoft 365 can be installed on up to 5 devices at a time with the same subscription. Be it for PC, Mac, Phones or Tablets. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family editions don't come with Publisher nor Access, unless you subscribe to the Business or Enterprise. Also both Office 2021 and 365 will keep updating constantly. Just that the Office usually has a support lifetime for about 6 years.

Thanks for a great in-debt comparison :) I am one of those people who absolutely despise this subscription culture. I firmly believe that microsoft is slowly killing their office package by turning into a subscription, just like the adobe suite is slowly dying due to the same thing. The Affinity suite (Photo, Designer, Publisher) is slowly choking Photoshop and Illustrator, Davinci Resolve is choking out Premiere Pro and soon someone will make a text editor that will actually kill Microsoft Office. I paid 20$ for my Microsoft Office 2021 Professional, and for mac it is 55$ for the home and business version. I am not paying microsoft that horrendous price tag either. Keep up the good work

Deep, dark secret: Most people use only a small fraction of the features offered in any version of Office. Back when I was working in the corporate world, I got my MS "specialist" certificates in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. I quickly realized that most people could not understand what I was doing with Office or what I was suggesting in order to make more effective use of these tools, by themselves, and together: Templates, macros, VBA, forms, custom toolbars, pushing Word outlines to PowerPoint, tables of contents, linked documents. "Stop it, will you?!?!" So, I did.

Very well presented. For future videos of the developing Office subscription and standlone business models, I would like to see in your videos what Microsoft offers as to the levels of techncial support for each business model. Troubleshooting Microsoft Office issues through Microsoft portals (chat/email/community) is often wasted with "try this/try that" solutions, only leading to the necesity of phone support (if you can find it) and service from Microsoft. My two cents...I think your audience would really appreciate knowing some additional tips/tricks to resolve issues with both models, if the need arised.

I would even pay an additional fee for that, but I draw the line at having to pay the full purchase price multiple times or over/over. I have 2 computers that I use regularly and at least one of my units is getting old enough that I need to consider upgrading. It's not very cost-effective if I have to keep purchasing it over and over.

If you have 2007 keep it because it avoids much of the frustrating fuss of later versions which started the real rot in Office 2013. The bald fact is that M'soft has used the same kernel since 1998 and just twiddles and tweaks, including features/apps which are withdrawn without announcement. 'Compatibility Mode' is a techie way of saying "we screwed up and you might lose format and more in your documents". Better to have 2007 standalone but full featured Enterprise is best. Any apps and features introduced later (and avoiding the abiding Save/Save As chaos) will work with your Office 2007 as YOU want these to work offline or online. Some obviously only work online. But online means that M'soft is watching you -- just one of their increasing tendencies. As I approach retirement from university work I increasingly suggest that for most 'school' things Libre Office and a separate free offline substitute for Publisher is superior, not least across many more languages than M'soft has ever reached. The core Libre Office is free and where fees are charged for specialized science and accountancy add-ons these move with the times and a pop-up describes changes. M'soft has been lamentable about informing customers for the last 20 years. Finally, where 365 Family is a fairly okay price all other packages are extortionate per feature/app and back up experience. M'soft Support just redirects to Bing articles and interactive support has long bitten the dust. It is truly outrageous that a brand new PC running Windows does not get at least 1 year's use of key features such as MS Works used to be. Finally, Libre Office uses an open compatibility format whereas MS Office is proprietary. Little wonder that greedy Microsoft Corp is being elbowed out by Linux and Apple in such as education and medicine in Europe and the Commonwealth countries.

You know that when Kevin and Leila upload a video on the same topic you cannot miss out! Thanks Kevin :) Office 2021 fills the gap between 2019 & 365. I do not like that in 2021 you won't get feature updates, but what about security ones? You said that you can get Office 2021 for only 1 PC, but if we deactivate Office and then use the same Product key on another PC, will it work? Microsoft should have a 1 time payment option for Office 365 too...

Microsoft 365 is essentially better, but there's an issue. If you're working with multiple people, different versions of Office can cause conflicts. In that case, it's better to go with the version that will work on all machines smoothly. Plus, the new features are generally not something you'd use frequently anyway. Some of them are just simplified versions of multiple features which were already present. I recently installed Office 2016 on my dad's laptop. He was using Office 2007 earlier. Now everything's messed up. Alignments, some styling etc. He's a professor so he generally has to share these documents with his colleagues, so that was a bummer and he had to spend some time correcting those.

Using newer functionalities, perhaps without knowing they're new, may be a big problem. A couple of months ago I was reading right about x-lookup: luckily I notices that only Office 365 could support it, otherwise I would have provided a Office 2016 user with a file they couldn't have used (I eventually used VBA). As for updates, onetime fee editions don't get new features, but they do get updates with patches and so on. My policy is: if you don't know what Office release other people who're gonna use that file use, stick with an older version. Even Office 2013 could be too new: suppose you create a table in Excel, and someone else tries to open the file using, say, LibreOffice. That table (not its contents) will be gone, and some formulas won't work (I tried yesterday) The only feature I'd really love to see is the possibility to choose between the damn ribbon and a menu: I've been using Office 2003 up to a few years ago, right because of the ribbon.

I enjoy using Microsoft Publisher because it is a convenient desktop publishing program. The first time I used Publisher was in 2002 when I bought my first microcomputer, complete with Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Publisher 2002. Now I am getting the most value from Publisher 2019. I have used Microsoft 365, but I intend to keep my computer, because it contains a big collection of printer fonts that may not be possible to load into a new computer. In whatever you do, let the right choice be the first choice.

To get outlook - which is required for my work environment - I would need office 2021 $220, whereas 365 has Outlook even in the Personal acct for $60 year. So 2021 would have to be viable for at least 4 years to make that work out. UNLESS -- Microsoft starts jacking up the rates for 365 to extraordinary heights once most are on-board with it. Wish I could just keep my Office 2010 forever - but I'd imagine they will be sure to change the OS so that it will soon be incompatible and thus inop. Clearly I have a rather low view of MS. If it wasn't for my work environment requirements I'd use one of the 3rd party office suites. Since all my company is using 365 - it is safer for me to go that route - at any time there may be a new feature that they will need me to use. So I'm stuck with MS Office 365. LOL

I'm getting a new computer, so I'm faced with choosing between the stand-alone or the subscription. Feature-wise, I edit. I track changes. I don't think that would change much over time. But the draw of the subscription is the included storage. Decisions, decisions!

It's one thing to get things any and everywhere but somethings outweigh the other, in this case I'm just going to go over a few from MS Word for office and M365. MS Office - Pros: 1- One time payment. 2- Most files can stay just on your PC that you installed it on. 3-The limit is how much your PC can handle, but most PC's can be upgraded to just about 8 to 12 TB of space [Depending on the motherboard, it may be able to hold more with the right size memory HDD and SSD], Also you can place it in cloud with Outlook. 4- No unwanted changes to your files that you save. Cons: 1- Only one device. 2- Only one PC can use it, but USB's exist. [Must use with a parches-ed install Key]. 3- It's a lot of money for parts, but lest likely to get lost. 4- No updates, must buy a new version. Microsoft 365 [M365] - Pros: 1- Somewhat less price. 2- Can be found on about any device. 3- You can pay for about 8 to 10 TB of space in the cloud. 4- Just about endless updates [until new Subscription]. Cons: 1- Must be signed-in, lose that sign-in data you may lose all data. 2- Can be hacked into on just about any device. 3- the longer you keep it there, the more that comes out of your wallet. 4- Files may become corrupted do to updates of terms of serves and use. 5- Must have a WiFi Source to properly function. [Do to Window's Update]. I have office but I'm being forced to update it do to windows forced update to windows 10. So, even if you do [or did] pay for your Office program you may be forced to pay again when a new "Windows OS" is forced on you.
