Everybody should at least once in their lifetime see topfuel dragsters live, such an impressive experience! The power of the sound and shockwaves is something else and the technical aspects are absolutly crazy aswell! By the end of the run they completly melted their glowplugs and they are essentialy dieseling/its a runaway to the end of the run until fuel gets cut off, completly mindblowing :)

Note, turbos and 4v dohc is banned in top fuel. They could be much faster, but... many tracks in the us are too short now, even @ the shortened 1000', and the NHRA does not want them to go faster. If modern engine configuration was used, tf would be much faster.

If you want to try aluminum wheels, have the surface of the aluminum prepared with a knurling tool at the machine shop. However, I think I have a better idea. At work, we use a lot of urethane and epoxy for casting, and they are quite impressive. You could have an aluminum wheel machined with channels through the diameter of the wheels, then cast urethane around the wheel. This way, the tire would be mechanically locked to the wheel.

I get the feeling you're going to run into ballooning issues there, and I think, especially with how often the current tires are being completely destroyed, it's not going to be cost effective, I think the current technology needs to be refined and I think we need to stick with plastic wheels but design them so that their structure accounts for the crazy forces that their experiencing.

Maybe the diff blow was due to the sticky part of the road, all that 100hp was put through the diff as the wheels were locked to the road from the sticky road, maybe usually the wheels spin up a bit on normal tarmac and takes strain off the diff. love the vids!

@grzegorzgawron9538
@grzegorzgawron9538 8 ай бұрын
I am almost 100% sure that the problem was too much traction, all the power suddenly went to the drive shaft which simply couldn't handle it. Under normal conditions, the wheels would spin and the power from the engines would be distributed. It's one thing to withstand the power transmission at high speed, and another thing to withstand the power at the start, especially from the electric motor which provides full torque from the very beginning. The cause of the car jumping is also too much grip, this is what a wheel behaves when it has too much grip.

My suggestion if you are going to try a special wheel is to go to a skateboard wheel manufacturer and see if they will help you. They make hard to soft compound wheels and everything in between. I would think that a solid compound wheel would solve your problem of the rubber de laminating and the rim failing. Won't hurt to try good luck

Hey, One way to solve the problem with the exploding tires would be to increase their diameter. The centrifugal force that lets them explode decreases exponentially with increasing size (at the same speed of the car!!). In other words, the tires would tend to explode way, way less by increasing their diameter by only a small amount, even if the car is driving at the same speed. And the smaller the tire, the bigger the gain with small changes, so it's especially applicable to the rc world. Decreasing the mass of the tire would decrease the centrifugal force too, but changing the diameter has a bigger impact (because of squared values in the formulas). Of course, the gearing would have to change according to the new tire size.

Carbon fiber or aluminum. You must drill holes under the rubber. So when you pour/mold the rubber it will make a rivet. A physical lock instead of a glue. Through the rim to the inside by the webbing. Bloodhound (SSC) or (LSR) and the Thrust car had to do it.

I am not sure if anyone else has covered this in the comments....but I have watched hundreds of drag racing videos from Santapod. That track as wonderful as it is for full-size cars has a fine 'washboard' surface undulation in the prepped section. I have noticed it many times when watching short wheelbase drag cars, such as Karts with bike motors. They hop about fiercely. In your video, at 21:18 you can see that washboard quite clearly. Great videos. Great fun. Please keep up the super work.

Hi Kevin if you would increase tier radius the centripetal forces in the wheel drum would decrease, (f=m(v^2)/r). Maybe line the periphery of the rotating surface with uni directional carbon fiber band and epoxi and then put on the foam / rubber. Great content by the way.

Love the video Kev! A couple observations... Your car definitely looks too heavy for plastic wheels at those speeds and loads. Carbon fiber or aluminum wheels do sound in order. Perhaps you can afix a plastic ring outside the circumference of an aluminum wheel, then glue the rubber/foam to that plastic? The solid link instead of a spring and shock is certainly where the wear and tear on your suspension arm joints is coming from. If the arm can't pivot, it's going to try and move somewhere, and those pivots looked to be the weakest link. Perhaps go for a very strong spring and use bump-stops to prevent travel going too far. A suggestion for stopping the cars when you lose driveline or tires: rig a parachute system on another radio channel. It's how the big boys do it!

I absolutely think the reason you are getting the bounce is because of the prepped track surface. Same thing happens to real cars when they have too much grip, it’s called wheel hop. Wreaks havoc on the driveline parts. Those little cars with all that power need to be able to have a little bit of wheel spin, I would think. Especially when accelerating early in the run.
@michaelhorne8366
@michaelhorne8366 8 ай бұрын
No such thing as too much traction in drag racing. Wheel hop is caused by the driven wheels pushing forward and losing traction. On an IRS setup you see an increases in toe angle which causes the wheels to slip. Once the traction is off they snap back to their normal position, bite back in, slam forward again, rinse, repeat. It happens on live (solid) rear axles when the whole diff assembly rolls forward, compressing the lower trailing arm bushings to a point where they cannot move anymore. The sudden bump as the diff hits limits causes it to break traction, which allows the diff to fall back, wheels to bite back in, push forward again, also rinse, also repeat. The answer is always a stiffer bushing in your lower control arms (IRS) or sturdier trailing arms for live axle racers. Considering the twist visible in the lower control arms at the end of the video this is almost certainly whats happening. I would be putting a solid control arm at the front instead of a damper as Kev speculated. Hopefully he'll have a look at some drag car info for advice.
@muskokamike127
@muskokamike127 8 ай бұрын
100% that's why. The prepped surface helps with traction but it also prevents the wheels from rotating by increasing rolling resistance and since it isn't consistent, you get wheel hop.

I think if the issue with the wheels fracturing can be overcome. By machining some solid single piece wheels. The next issue is to try and look at the layout of the internals to improve balance. Finally the down force could be tweaked to get more load on the wheels at high speed. I’d try contacting a local university engineering department to see if they have a wind tunnel and would be willing to help.

Remember you pinned the throttle on a drag strip. Those things as you know are sticky as hell, and by putting full throttle with ton of grip, you put too much stress onto everything. Combined with the entire car hopping around you end up with massive energy jolts onto the drive system. Might be worth it to take the car to accelerate on the normal surface and use the extra sticky only for braking

The base of the rc was never meant to see that weight/power and traction!Definitely a good idea with the shock’s Too! If it’s possible on those arms To limit torsional unloading of the control arms a pair of shocks per arm at the front and back of the tower will help reduce tramp and help keep dampen those vibrations when peeling the tyres also at that power and weight an extra trailing link or link’s from the rear of the chassis to the leading edge of the lower control arm or both will also reduce the unloading, I’d suggest going back to springs but source some seriously heavy wire! perhaps small engine valve springs or similar with heavy shock oil to suit,And for the wheels I’d go carbon fibre! the only wheels that stay on the front of my rwd speed run car are carbon/foam! It’s 1/8th scale rear drive but with a 1/10th front end, so the little wheels are properly spinning! Plastic wheels just expand or explode!

Where the garages are behind the start line, there used to be a shed where you could stand. When they took off it filled with smoke and you got peppered with rubber. Loved it! Sadly thats long gone.

I like track racing so much more than a thing just going in a straight line and after 4 seconds the run is over. But to each their own :)

If you look at slowmotion video of racecars and dragster tires. The rubber tires have loads of flex so much you can see the wrinkle in slowmo on launch and match that with their suspension travel. Id say thats what keeps them from hopping on that prepped surface. The RC not having any suspension or flex at the wheels to absorb all that torque on such a sticky surface. It makes you wonder your wheels arent the issue of why they keep failing but maybe finding the proper surface to account for the wheel spin. Also having a lengthy run up to gradually build up the speed so all the G force isn't put on the wheel/tire so quickly just tearing it apart or so your not giving it the chance to spin the tires and make them blow out that way. But im just kind of shooting in the dark. Im not an expert and im not sure if all that makes any sense but yeah.

Standing by the starting line as a top fuel car takes off is an experience. I'd suggest doing it at least once. Fun Fact: Top Fuel cars idle at 100+mph.

When you overpower a high traction surface to get wheel hop. The tires don't completely break free but they break traction and gain traction in rapid succession causing a hopping effect.

Aluminium wheels that are 2 part bolt together, you then have a foam tyre that can be pinched within the join, ideally the foam should be shaped to fit rather than pinching randomly. BUT also use glue aswell!
