The pulleys are crowned and that's why the belts don't fall off. The crowned pulleys cause the flat belts to self-center.

Funny story, back in the 80's I was involved in the running of the RC car racing at the Weston Park model show and we had permission to set up the track on the actual front lawn of the hall, we had a special gantry/steps built over the wall to allow pitting down below and the drivers to access the track. On the Sunday of racing The Earl of Bradford who lived at the hall suddenly appeared ranting and raving about the track being on the lawn and started kicking the cars as they were racing around, he took quite a bit of calming down and eventually went off in a huff 🤣

I can't be 100% sure, but from memories of my trade training, those belts stay on because the pulleys have a slightly convex profile (think of the section view). So the belt, to come off, would have to go uphill, one side of it anyway. Now because I'm a bit superstitious, I don't think 'Game Over' is such a good name for a plane. Sort of tempting fate. It's like calling it the 'Plummet'. Great vid as always Kev. Lots of fun was had.

Yep, the pulleys are rounded, so as the belt runs off one side the tension in the belt pulls it a bit crooked and it runs itself back to the center of the pulley. There's a bit of an art to lining up the machinery good enough for the belt to work properly. I agree with you on the naming. Game Over the airplane needs to be flown by a pilot named Crash and maintained by Rod Knock Rick. :)

yes you are correct and i believe the term is "crowned pulley" if anyone wants to find info about it online. most bandsaws use this tactic to keep the blade (a metal flat belt) tracking on the wheels

what stops flat belts from coming off of a wheel is a crown in the wheel. basically the center of the wheel is raised slightly so theres a bump in the middle. this is counter-intuitive since you would think you want the opposite to keep a belt on, but just due to the magic of physics the flat belt wants to track to the middle of the wheel even if you try and push it to the side

Cool vid. The "bailer" an addition to the "threshing machine" which separates the grain from the chaff, which is then bailed. Stooks would be fed into the thresher, a grain truck would pull beside and fill with grain. The thresher is driven off the "power take off" via a belt from the vintage tractor. We did this on the family farm to about the early 1960s when the combine was affordable.

Love the new video! All your content is fun, interesting, and very often instructional. I heard you mention upgrading your camera(s). Just want to suggest maybe some new audio equipment first. I wear headphones and still can only rarely hear those off-camera. When there's wind, your pearls get stomped as well. the reason why the belt does not come off the pulley is because the middle is domed so the belt sits in the middle and does no come off

the pulleys on the bailer are crowned. it seems counter intuitive, but when you slope the pulley down on the sides, the belt tends to want to self right to the higher point, which is the middle. they act as self righting pulleys. most people would think to make the middle of the pulley lower and the sides higher, like a valley, but the pulleys would want to climb the higher sides and hop off the pulley. most of the time if there are no 90 degree angles, and instead the sides smoothly ramp up at the edges, it'll hop off by itself. pretty interesting science going on there.

You can never be too safe driving a race car ,monster truck or piloting a high performance aircraft .How many of you think Kevin should install a BSR ,etc. fuselage parachute in his aircraft ?One example is Cirrus .aircraft .As of 16 March 2024 there have been 129 saves with 265 survivors in aircraft equipped with the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS).Almost 300 people who would of likely died. had they not had a ballistic parachute system on their aircraft. I watched an aerobatic plane in free fall saved by the ballistic parachute. IN a perfect world, Kevin will never have to use it, but it sure is nice to have it.
