Is it necessary to use plastic film when laying up or is it to cut down on finishing? I have a repair to do on the inside where there is a wear spot and am wondering if I need to seal it with plastic for it to hold and cure properly. Thanks!

Hi- The plastic wrap is only to make the outside smooth as glass. You can't really put plastic on the inside. Can't stretch it tight-becomes a trampoline. Just lay the patch inside, making sure to wet out the patch completely. Soak up excess resin around patch edges with a clean rag and let cure. That's it. Paddle.

Shouldn't the final layer be fiberglass like the inside patch? I thought the outside layer was glass.

There is no particular requirement. Kevlar is stronger than glass. Need less to achieve good strength. Glass on a Souris River is there as a superior scuff guard compared to other brands which only use Kevlar only. Can't sand Kevlar but you can sand glass. Regarding glass over the patch, it's not that big a deal especially when the resin is ramped up to the patch so the patch does not have abrupt edges.

I have to do a patch repair but the Kevlar boat I bought was painted. Do I have to sand off the paint?

Is it paint or gel coat? Also, is it a boat or a canoe?

@@ElyresortBlogspot It’s a Scott 16 foot prospector canoe. It may have had gel coat at one point, I can’t tell but something tells me no. The guy painted over it with regular paint so I don’t know if it’s gel coat underneath.

So how long to leave the plastic wrap on??? Answer... take it off right away!! He doesn't tell you and I am a novice so I left it on a couple hours and when you peel up the wrap the patches come right with it! I scoured the internet searching for the answer too. I will not be so quick to accept internet advice...

Epoxy resins for laminating always harden with a tacky surface to aid the application of the next layer. If you're not applying a next layer. you prevent that tackiness by excluding the air. When the film comes off it will be a hard shiny surface.

@@pbassred , Impressive the epoxy is designed to do that. I covered my teardrop and it was tacky. Figured I had mixed the wrong ratio. So tried a thin layer of hardener and it worked.
