This is probably one of the most, if not most meaningful shaving video I've ever watched. The whole looking back to the first time you decided to wet shave, the journey and the actual pieces you used back then. Something in that is very emotional, I can tell by looking at your expressions that this is something you are very passionate about. Five years from now id like to look back at the first pieces I owned and hopefully come back to this day and experience the feeling again. I'm new to wet shaving and I may have striked gold finding your channel. You have a brand new and loyal subscriber in me. Thank you sir.

I switched to DE shaving last November after 38 years of cartridge/disposable razors and shaving foam. Always found shaving a chore but now really enjoy it. I now have 5 razors and a growing assortment of blades. I think it a appeals on a number of fronts. There is something therapeutic about a more traditional wet shave and I enjoy the whole ritual element. I also enjoy buying and trying out all the paraphernalia. Would not have got here if it had not been for chaps like you and your channels - many thanks.

I started DE shaving in March, 2015 after about 40 years of cartridge shaving. I started cartridge shaving with the Gillette Trac II, graduated to the Atra, then the Sensor, to the Mach 3 and then the Fusion (regular and Power Fusion) with a Wilkinson and Schick cartidge razor thrown in here and there. I got fed up with the price of those Fusion cartridges that got clogged with stubble after not shaving for a few days. The cartridges were so expensive that I would push them for 30 shaves and wind up with razor bumps from pressing so hard on the neck by the 15th shave with a cartridge. Check this out. I would have liked to have had the Techmatic: gillette.com/en-us/about/our-story#prod-1965

At the year in which you filmed this, I had been de shaving for 24 years. I can still remember the awe I had looking at the Merkur Futur for the first time. I couldn't believe I was going to use this beautiful ,shinny thing to shave with instead of the plastic abomination that had left my face in pieces for years, called the Mach 3. I took my time and had a great shave with zero irritation. I was hooked from then on. I used the same blades and soap until last year when they discontinued the soap and changed the country origin of the blades. Since then I have been trying everything new and an glad that I have. There is so much more out there now than there was in late 95- early 96 when I started. I am glad I started watching your videos from your first time till now as I can sorta see what things others have struggled with and what techniques I can gain in using different soaps, including the ways to lather. Thanks for making your fun, quirky and helpful videos.

The two times in my life that I have enjoyed shaving; when my father first taught me how to shave in my early teens and when I started wet shaving two years ago. Everything in between it felt like a chore. I did it because I had to. It was not enjoyable. It was a necessity. I saw an article on Facebook about using a safety razor and how it gave a better shave and it was cheaper. Annnnd then I fell down the rabbit hole. I blame you, Kensurfs, and Paul H. 😂😂😂 Just kidding, but seriousy, I have learned a lot from you three. It's been a wild, fun ride!

I started wet shaving about six months ago. I'm not a morning person, so with my long commute, I used either electric or cartridge. But with COVID, I've been working from home and so had more time in the morning- and didn't need to shave daily. I started with a Henson (made an hour away, so thought I'd support a local company brave enough to open their doors in 2020). About a month ago I bought my second razor - a Wilkinson Sword Classic Chrome. And on Monday my Merkur 34 arrived. I bought the Merkur because you and others seem to love it and recommend it as a starter. So far, so good! I get what you mean about the rabbit hole; so far, about a dozen different blades, an equal number of creams (just got my first hard soap) and two brushes. And I have a long list of other things I want. Loving the journey! Thanks for all you share; I've learned a lot.

Kevy, it is a joy to see someone enjoying himself with his shave. Its something that is hard to describe to another person why we wet shave. "Why?! Isn't it faster with xxxbrand shave goop?" And you go "No boy, you don't get it, I DON'T WANT TO rush the shave." The scent, the feel, holding that razor in your hands, expecting to cut yourself and of course you do that first time, but after you get the hang of it, and the shaves you get from DE shaving, you just can't go back. Nor can you truly explain to someone who hasn't wet shaved why. But to everyone who do wet shave, that glint in the eyes, says it al. 😁 That rabbit hole though. Yes, I could have shaved money by sticking to my original soap, razor, brush. But lets just say I jumped into that hole eyes wide open and its still a hell of a ride! (Mail call incoming soon I hope ... logistics the world over being borked)

Six months ago with a Merkur Progress, a Yaqi brush, and Arko soap. Even though I never got past setting 2 on the Progress I loved shaving traditionally from the start. Next I bought the Rockwell 6c and some PAA CK6 soap. That was a revelation. I shifted the Progress on pretty swiftly after that. In the meantime I consumed you, Paul H and SugerDaddyShaves entire catalogue of videos, so thanks for that. This is a fantastic hobby. There's not many hobbies where you can get a good start for an outlay of a couple of hundred quid. I'm a keen photographer and the starting price for that is more like a couple of grand. DE shaving can be enjoyed for very little outlay. Great stuff.😃

A nice trip down memory lane. My journey began in March 2012, as I recall ordering on Amazon the EJ DE89, and caught the wave of resurgence in old school shaving. Used the Derby blades that came with them and just stuck with them for quite a while. Never looked back and wish I discovered DE wet shaving sooner. Now my den is becoming a museum of vintage and all sorts of nice new razors, lots and lots of soaps, blades, after shaves, and thoroughly enjoying it more and more.

I started not that long before you Kevy. Like many of us, I started watching Paul H, Chris Bailey, Mantic, Stephen K and Michael F. After buying my first DE razor (EJ DE89) I was hooked. The first shaves were bad. A lot of irritation and frustration. Tempted to throw the towel in, I stuck with it. And I’m glad I did. Shaving now is enjoyable and irritation free and closer than shave with a cartridge. Thankfully I have found my way out of the rabbit hole and only have a very small collection of soaps, creams, brushes, blades and razors. Still Enough to last me for a number of years right enough. Great video Kevy and it’s been a pleasure to follow your journey from the start. You’ve come a long way and you’re now part of the wet shaving royalty I’ve named above. Top man.

Great video Kevy... First off it was nice to hear about a fellow Saskatchewan wet shaver on your feed and bravo on nailing the pronunciation (most out of Canada mess it up).... A year ago I made the switch to DE after seeing a razor and just like you I thought it was totally cool, watched some of Ken’s then your videos and was right let’s do this. Went and bought a Wilkinson sword razor, blades, soap and brush and like ok.... Well might as well have stuck my face under the lawn mower it was a blood bath!!! Not one to give up watched almost every video you and Ken have done and before long figured it out and then fell right down the rabbit hole and shaving went from an expensive pain in the ass with cartridges to an expensive hobby and labour of love!!!! Thanks for all your great and uplifting videos and all the laughs you provide they help make a bad day and this crazy virus going on better and I look forward to all your future ones!!!!

Great shave and journey Kevy!!! My journey into wet shaving was weird. In 1999, my favorite uncle passed away, and my dad gave me one of his old razors, which was a Gillette Super Adjustable 84. Blades were hard to come by, but my dad had a friend that was in the military who was able to send soaps and blades from overseas where he was stationed. He used to send thousands of blades a month and soaps like Mitchell's Wool Fat, Proraso, and TOBS pucks. So that's how I was able to get blades and shave soap here in the US, where it was not widely available. I didn't buy my own DE razor until around 2007 when I saw a Gillette Aristocrat in a pawn shop here, and since then, the bug has been around. I love this hobby, and I'm glad to see that it's so much easier to get supplies now. Cheers!!!

I started wetshaving a couple of months later than you. I remember placing 2 parallel international orders that ended up costing me double the price I paid, due to customs taxes I was not aware of. One order was from the US: I bought almost everything in Nick Shaves Gear of the Year 2015. The second order was from UK, where I bought TOBS creams and Captain Fawcett shaving soap and badger brush, the same products used in a ouple of Barber shops I went to in my hometown. I still remember my exitement when I smelled TOBS Sandalwood for the first time, and how the sent invaded my bathroom. The same exitement I felt when smelling and using B&M Seville for the first time. And my love-at-first-use of Fine Platinum aftershave. Trully unforgetable experiences that made me a wetshaving adict. Cheers, Kevy! I don't always leave a comment, but always a pleasure to see your videos.

I also started with a VdH razor and their soap. I just bought a Rockwell 6C and some proper soap, although the VdH wasn't bad. The shave was GREAT!! I don't see myself buying tons of razors. I guess a true adjustable, maybe a vintage one from my birth year and maybe one or two more, but soaps, I could see having a collection of near 20. I make soap, so I appreciate the skill involved and I enjoy the different scents and whatnot.

My answer to why I love traditional wet shaving is that it is 'my time'. Those 15 to 20 minutes are filled with lovely textures and fragrances. The focal point being the preparation of a creamy fluffy lather with something like Taylor of Old Bond Street in my shaving bowl and then lathering up with a premium brush like the Alpha T 400 in polished aluminium. Sublime.

What a joy to watch, thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope you and Mrs Kevy are keeping well. I felt the same when I got my first razor (EJ DE89) and thought wow, this thing looks beautiful. When I got this, I also got a sample pack of different blades from the same place as the razor. Having not watched your videos or anyone else's for that matter. I picked the Feather blade out of the sample packs and had my first ever DE shave. My chin and the front of my chin were covered in weepers from what I remember, that was just over two years ago. After then, I started to watch shaving videos, I then learned that Feather blades are the sharpest blades around. They are still a blade I like to use in SOME of my razors (more milder razors they seem to suit me in best). I must admit that my moving to DE shaving was I was fed up with the price of Fusion cartridges. But that was before I fell down the rabbit hole 🐇🤣

Not only that-I used a terrible soap that did not lather and dried up so quick! It did not tolerate any water! I thought I was horrible at building a lather but it turned out to be the soap itself. I started DE shaving around the same time you did. I just checked and my first order was March, 2015. You probably watched the same videos that got me started (Geofatboy, Nick Shaves, PaulHfilms, Busta, etc). I buzzed all my hair off a few weeks ago with decades old electric clippers. The guides were long gone so I cut off about 6 inches of hair with a pair of scissors before starting. I haven't worn my hair this short since grade school when I took crew cuts and used "stickum" to get the hair in front to stick up.

I started in January and have 3 razors including a vintage gillette, 6 brushes (which are my big draw) soaps and various blades. It's the TOBS sandlewood reminds me of my Grandad tho. It's a relaxing moment down and fascinating understanding the combinations that work well or not down the rabbit hole!

Hi Kevy. Mark from Malaysia here. Been shaving for 23 years. The last 15 years I used a cheap Gillette plastic DE razor and mostly Gillette 7 O'clock Permasharp blades. Hated shaving all those years. The razor felt aggressive and the blade although sharp, was very uncomfortable. Like u, I watched a Nick Shaves video by chance and that was it. 6 months ago, I bought my first real DE razor, the Edwin Jagger DE89 and instantly fell in love with it. 6 months later I have a Parker Variant Adjustable, Merkur 34C and my EJ. As for blades, I use mostly the Astra SP, Personna Lab Blue, Personna Red as well as some Feather blades. I love the Arko sticks. Can't go wrong with them. Some Proraso soaps and creams, Arko creams and some very good Indian made shaving creams like Vi-John which are very cheap and easily available in Indian stores here. From hating shaving, I now can't wait for my daily shave ... at 43 years of age! Especially now since we have been in lockdown and can't go out that much. Thanks for your great videos. I've watched pretty much all of them. Thanks to guys like u, Paul H, Nick, Geofatboy etc, wet shaving is kind of making a comeback. Keep it up Kevy. Take care and stay safe.

Haha. That's for sure. I've spent more than I should have. I'm sure most of us wet shavers have. But I think I'm all set for a while. No real interest in getting another razor. I'm happy with the DE89, 34C and Parker Variant. As for blades, I have enough to last me years. But soaps and creams are really interesting. Luckily, there are some great shaving creams from India that costs less than a dollar here. I can send you a few to try out if you want. Just give me your email address and we'll take it from there.

Its funny, I started wet shaving because I got so tired of being screwed by the cost of cartridge blades. So I started watching paulHfilms Kensurfs you and another cut above. I got sucked in I love wet shaving. I now call my bathroom my shave den and spend more money than I did with cartridge shaving, But I love it. I love the variety of hardware and the scents and my skin is better for it. Its my hobby now. Love the channel.

It's great to see that you've retained your joy of wet shaving after almost five years😀. The other great thing happening in October 2015 was the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as manager of Liverpool Football Club 😁😁. My first wet shave three years ago was an old English tech razor, derby blade, T&H 1805 shaving cream and a cheap synthetic brush...

Hi Kevy, I swithed to wet shaving after my electric razor (battery) gave up. I went to the supermarket with only the half of my face shaved and bought a can of Gillette foam and my first (and last) Gillette cartridge razor. But when I noticed the price of the spare cartridges, I started to check out safety razors and watching Geofatboy videos. My first start kit was a razor, brush and shaving creme from China, but it was a total cheap crap. Then I bought my Muhle R89 and R41 razors, then Razorock German 37 slant that I loved and now my absolutely favorit Rockwell 6C razor. I love the wet shaving because it gives BBS shaves and I also try to avoid plastic stuff etc. And wet shaving are for real gents, OK Ok... and ladies. 😉 It is also a nice hobby. Stay safe and Take care. Cheers

I am quite confident that MrsKevy did/has done a fine job. The only problem I see is that I can't tell the difference between your short hair and long hair stages.... :D I recall answering your question, about why I started wet shaving, in great detail in a previous video many moons ago but I'll summarize: I had a issue with ingrown hairs in section of my face. I don't have extremely tightly curled hair so I don't the significant problem some people do but I would get these ingrown hairs in about 3 spots and they could be an absolute "B" to resolve....And now you know/are reminded. ;-)

Good evening Kevy! I must say this; what are those pruning shears doing in the shower? It is my considered opinion that disposable/cartridge type razors feel like toys and cheapens the shave experience. Whereas a traditional safety razor is and feels like a tool! This automatically increases the significance and relevance, and, for some, the enjoyment of the shave. I know what you mean about the reputation of the Feather Hi-Stainless blade. I was afraid to use it knowing I would slice half my face off. My first brush was a bit of a floppy disaster; synthetic boar. Horrible when compared to the ones that came after, especially with the likes of Simpson, TDR, and Greydog. I was lucky to have been to Barber College, have a barber's license, and practiced in a shop for 10 years. I knew how to make a lather yet I learned even more from watching others on KZbin. Now I make a really luxurious lather...just not Kevy super lather. As far as the rabbit hole, I try not to collect too much shave hardware and software. If my equipment cannot fit inside my shave den cabinet then I need to downsize. I do know I have about 30 years worth of quality razor blades and about 15 years of shaving soaps, but it fits into the cabinet. I hope the enablers leave me in peace. Weepers/nicks/cuts are a part of shaving and can never be completely eliminated, even with a cartridge. Some people even manage to nick themselves with an electric razor (WTF?). I can't use the Nivea due to the fumes and makes my asthma act-up with fits of coughing. Pity. I can use the Old Spice! Great stuff. Nice shave and a fine looking haircut. Please be safe. Take care.
@kevyshaves41094 жыл бұрын
Hi Todd. That's a good comment about it being like a tool, I suppose it is. I still, get excited when I smell a new soap or,hold a new razor. I think I might need to,adopt your shave cabinet for space. My spare room is starting to look like a storage unit! The pruning shears area reminder for me to try to repair the dodgy clippers or buy a new set! 😂😀👍

Fine shave Kevy, fine shave💈💈 Whether it was your first or last wet shave, that was a good one. I can kinda remember my first wet shave, it happened in 1970 I think🤔 I used a Schick Injector my mom got me, Colgate soap and a splash of my dads Skin Bracer😬 Went to electrics pretty quick after that, then migrated to carts and canned foam😒 Back to wet saving in the late 90's and never looked back, although sourcing product was a challenge😉 Great video and fun watch, thanks. Enjoy!

Hello from the other Scottish wet-shaving Kev! (Fife). I've been wet-shaving with DE razors since 2013 when I became sick and tired of the cost of cartridge razors. I couldn't for the life of me justify paying the quite honestly rip-off prices for plastic 3 or 5-bladers any longer. Shaving had become an absolute chore, and to be honest, I was fed up with getting razor burn on the bottom of my neck all of the time. I started off with a Pearl Open-Comb DE razor, but have since moved onto owning various razors, such as : Merkur 1904 41c, Muehle R41, Fatip Piccolo, Fatip Grande, Parker 60R, Muehle R89, and another open-comb whose name I can't remember at the moment. I don't have that heavy of a growth (I shave every 2-3 days on average) but I find the open-comb razors more suited to me as I like the closer feel of the blade on my skin, and I can 90% of the time avoid nicks and weepers with careful technique. I think the worst spots for me are at the bottom of my neck and underneath my nose/nostril area, always seem to get cut there if I do manage to get any. I've tried various shaving soaps/creams, including Taylor of Old Bond Street, but I keep on coming back to Proraso Eucalyptus & Menthol because it just seems to "work" for my skin and facial hair growth. I do like the Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood, that is a very close second in my book! I've tried various brands of DE Blades, including Derby, Gillette 7 O' Clock, Feather, Astra Platinum, Shark and Personna. For me, Shark or Astra Platinum blades work the best, and I occasionally work up the courage to use a Feather blade, though there's a slightly higher risk of nicks and cuts with one of those blades. I think I now have enough blades to do me well into my 50's and 60's! (I'm in my late 30's) It's funny how you said initially it seems cheaper, and in a way it is because you're not paying into Gillette's coffers any more, but it gets replaced with that G.A.S. I'm always tempted to check out another razor, brush, soap etc simply because I can. Right now I fancy getting myself an Edwin Jagger DE89 and a Merkur 15c.

Wanted to save space on my luggage lol so I bought one of those Bevel subscriptions to take with me. Not long after I got into wet shaving back in December 2014, my girlfriend and I had a conversation. The conversation was after I watched a stallion video, and in the video, Anthony talked about some of his shave gear. I thought wow, that guy has quite a bit of stuff, and I do not want to get like him when it comes to shave gear. But here it is 2020, and LOL, Has that conversation gone right out the window. I originally just want it about five razors, a couple of brushes, and a few soaps. Now I have almost 50 razors, I have 20 brushes, and almost 40 soaps. Let’s just say that I did not stick to the conversation LOL, but man has this ride been fun. Stay safe Kevy and have a great day.

I’m in my late 20s and i started wet shaving about 4 years ago. I had been shaving with 3 or 4 blades cartridge razors (Gillette and Wilkinson mostly). I hated shaving, to me it was such a chore but i had to do it because of work. Until one day, when my dad ditched cartridge razors and bought a plastic Wilkinson safety razor. And one odd summer morning, i found it beside the sink and gave it a go. I « shaved » like an animal, putting enormous pressure on the razor, and the result was a blood bath... now, i’m shaving with a Merkur Futur (setting 3) with a Feather blade getting fantastic shaves. My soap of choice is the Martin de Candre Classique. Anyway, getting into wet shaving was the best decision ever for my skin!!
