The Vegvísir is believed to provide guidance and protection to its bearer, and is often associated with navigation. According to the Huld Manuscript, collected in Iceland in 1860, the Vegvísir can help people find their way in bad weather or unknown territories, even when the path is unknown. The symbol may have originated in England, where star-shaped symbols have been traced back to the 15th century.

Icelandic lore. But who do think took it to Iceland? It was the explorers or vikings. It was believed to be like a compass. To keep you from becoming lost. While it is Icelandic it was created by Icelandic Christian a cultist . The entire idea of a compass wasn’t invited till well after the Viking age ended and this symbol was made popular by an Icelandic pop star in the 90s by the name of bjork. It’s the equivalent of getting kanji thinking it means love when it really translates to toaster. Yes it’s an extremely popular misrepresentation of a Viking rune that people love to get tattooed because it does look interesting but it’s not what people think it is.

Its the Vegvisir, believed to be a viking symbol, though there is no reports or evidence to prove its existence to the actual viking age. That being said, its a well known symbol that people today believe was from the period and since none of us were there to truly know, its classified as a viking symbol. The story behind it from my understanding is that vikings would wear this symbol on their left wrist, hand, or some such & it was believed to grant safe passage and to prevent the vikings from getting lost at sea.

VEGVISIR The Vegvisir Symbol is an ancient Nordic symbol recognised as the viking compass with eight Viking rune staves radiating out in a circle from the central point representing the cardinal (North, South, West, East) and intercardinal directions (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast) along with more in depth magical meaning behind each rune stave. It was believed, if this sign is carried, one will never lose one’s way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known.
