Hey John, please consider adding balance point percentage to your metrics. The 0th percentile comment makes it pretty evident where it stands, but a percentage of overall length would be more specific and make it easier to replicate on different brands of paddles.

Hi, do you mean where the balance point falls on a paddle, converted to a percentage, with 0% being the end of the handle and 100% the tip of the head? E.g., a 16.4-inch paddle (41.6 cm) with a 22.9 cm balance point would have a balance point location percentage of 55%?

Where do you see 1 year for Joola? Straight from Joolas website. JOOLA warrants the paddles to be free from major defects in workmanship and materials when used for the intended purpose under normal use and conditions for a period of 6 months from the date of receipt on original purchase in the United States and Canada. Aside from that you think there’s really gonna be any “manufacture defects” in 6months that don’t show up in 1 year?

Thank you for your time. The Las Vegas tournament was the most poorly run tournament I've watched in 8 years of watching pickleball. The floor had dozens of dead spots, and players were injured because of its movement. That fence next to the court was another dangerous obstacle, seeing players running into it and falling down. Reffing was a joke because there were no line cameras. IMO, 80% of Bar's serves were illegal. Then after calling several replays, they fault him. But then overturned their call, even though we saw that it was totally illegal; his foot was not touching the ground when he hit the ball. What a joke.

Played in Vegas this weekend. The Acrytech surface was rolled on top of some kind of foundations that were put on top of the carpets. Not sure what it was made of, but it was awful. @@johnkewpickleball I’ll be honest, I didn’t look too closely at it. But the foundation was raised up off of the carpet a couple of inches, but it almost looked like some kind of metal or hard plastic beams that it sat on top of. Again, I didn’t go digging to see what the foundation was, that was just from my glances as I was walking through! Check with a local orthodontist. They have cephalometric radiograph units that might work well. They are calibrated to control for magnification, so you would get fairly standardized images between different paddles, if you use the same machine. The original Ripple was delisted by USAP on June 3rd because it was too powerful and failed USAP's newly instituted PBCoR test. What's disappointing is that USAP has not released any information or performance standards for the test.

I really appreciate the discussion on cores. Couple of questions. First, is core material really expensive? I don’t understand why companies would not use better materials like Paddletek or Engage seems to do. Second, I thought the explanation for all the early core crushing of Gen 2 paddles was from heat? It sounds like your conversation with Crbn dispels that. So is heat not an issue with thermoforming?
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball Ай бұрын
Hi, I'm glad to hear the topic of polypropylene interests someone besides myself, haha. Yes, prices go up with grades of polymer, so that's an area to cut costs. Although I don't know how much polymer costs compared to, say, carbon fiber or Kevlar. But for your second question, yes, heat is still very important for core corruption. It seems that several factors were at play in the early days of thermoforming leading to all the broken cores: too much heat damaging the integrity of the core, low-grade polymer with lower heat tolerance, and thickness variance in the polymer.

Question for John. When USAP/PPAA does their deflection test do they lay the paddle on a flat surface or lay it on a frame that only contacts the outer edge of the paddle? My speculation is that they lay the paddle on a flat surface and thus this would explain how the Mod TA/Gearbox can pass the deflection test because it is only deflection of 1 surface with the other surface pressed against a solid object (i.e. it's only testing if the core itself deflects). If the test placed a paddle on the frame that only contacted the outer edges of the paddle then this would better test for deflection of the entire paddle (i.e. everything inside the perimeter of the paddle including a trampoline or tennis string type of deflection). Do you know how the test is performed?
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball Ай бұрын
Correct - deflection machines brace the paddle on the underside and then press in from the top. But the brace is small (couple of inches). So it's ineffective for floating cores

@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball Ай бұрын
Good point about the foam adhesion to polymer. That seems to be the potential Achilles heel of Gen-3 paddles. For the JOOLAs, my theory is that the polymer core becomes corrupted near the interface with the foam due to too much flexion (that's where the trampoline effect is most significant). So that may not be an issue with the Nexus, given that it's just foam-injected polymer cells.

Good job guys fielding my “re-core my paddle please” comment. I liked Eddie’s observation that replace the frame and keep the core would also be in play. I’m not so sure about it being cost prohibitive … probably more of unwarranted profit prohibitive. For an example … assume a paddle company was selling you a $333 paddle that spin was gone in a couple of months. Assume that company was big enough to be advancing the best tech, including the evolution of cores … and let’s say push for plug and play standardization. Why not subscription pricing with that trailblazing company … they will improve cores x times a year (or frames) … and I get the new tech with my subscription. If I pay $666 a year, and get 3 new tech cores a year, didn’t everyone make enough $, and player stays up with tech? I know … troublemaker … I will let myself out. btw … I still think that Slyce buttcap weight anchored to your hand is suspect regarding the balance and pivot point. 😁

Some more thoughts on the replaceable core model: At the basic level, you either can replace the paddle parts that wear out, or you have a disposable paddle. Assume the following is based on moving away from disposable paddles. I’ve thought for a while paddles would end up (after rule changes) following either the table tennis model (rubbers) or tennis model (strings). Note … for this post not implying actual rubbers or strings, just guessing we will have table tennis-like blade bases, or tennis racquet-like bases. You could have blade-like bases, and either rubbers OR half cores on each side (think 8 mm current plastic core and carbon/resin surface applied to both sides of blade. My guess is any future core magic would be too limited by the rubbers or half cores, so for this thought experiment lets go with the tennis model (frame/plug and play cores) At this point … in this TLDR rant 😁, maybe some input on the mature tennis racquet/strings market … both costs and what we are used to: - $100-250 racquets, last 5+ years, tech not changing much - I restrung 10ish times a year, brought my own strings to stringer … didn’t play with gut ($30ish stringing x 10 = $300 a year) - could buy any string I wanted, change tensions as needed - I could go to local tennis shop, grab 5 racquets to demo, demo fee deducted from new racquet purchase. You could also have demo racquets shipped to you from online retailer. Not a perfect system, you were demoing with whatever strings and tension were in the racquet, and both strings and tension mattered a lot). But still better the buying a paddle you never hit, or hit for 5 minutes borrowed at the courts. Paddle tech is currently at it’s early stages, changing very fast. Many of us think $250 disposable paddles with short lifespans is unacceptable. How could that change? - just start with cost … my $300 / yr stringing cost should be more than enough profit for a paddle company to keep me in the equivalent of “fresh strings” - there should be a way to demo new paddles, new cores, new tech beyond reviewer’s OMG this is an awesome paddle, although I’m all in on the OMG and loving it 😋 - since tech is changing so fast, perhaps there is actually a subscription model that might use (I’m like Eddie … never go the subscription route … but surely there is an opening here that beats buying a new paddle every x months). Reload is effectively a subscription product … addressing the current disposable paddle nonsense. If one loves their current paddle, reps and weighting to their preferences, and you get to replace the single unit core with the new and better single unit core with similar weight … you just gave me my “fresh new strings”. Rant over … $300 a year is enough for fresh paddle strings … uh … I mean core.

Will pickleball become a spin game for the most part in the future. I think to much spin will take fun out of the game in the future,,at least for me. I do a great amount of of spin myself. But my point is I've been playing for 6 years, gotta a great grasp of all the skills,,,and would not like to be beat by a one trick pony,,,yeah that would really suck,,I'd probably go back to Tennis if the future is all about spin. Is there a limit to how much spin a paddle could have potentially to give ones to much of an edge?

This is a play out of the Joola hand book. Release your paddle to content creators only and let them gush over it for a month, jack up the price then release it to the public that drank the kool aid. Massive sales then the common folk start to review it and the wave flattens out. Hopefully this one won't get de-listed right after everyone buys it.

Each x-ray revealed that the paddles are not structurally and functionally identical to the base model. "USAP “conduct[ed] a teardown” of the paddles, which revealed the full extent of foam around the rim and showed a violation of Rule 2.E.6.f, which prohibits springs or spring-like material, flexible membranes or any compressible material that creates a trampoline effect. USAP had communicated these results to Sport Squad on April 11, 2024, BEFORE the public release date."
