I don't give Joola ANY credit for admitting that their paddles break down more quickly. They knowingly made paddles that wouldn't last as long and apparently were difficult to deal with warranty wise. Some people went through pades in weeks. That isn't reasonable. Shame on Joola or amy manufacturer that build paddles on the edge of failure.

John, you should try the drop serve with the Ripple. It's really effective with my Ripple R1.14, especially from the corner. I've actually managed to ace some opponents with it haha.

I like the breakdown of medals by paddle brand, but you need to also add the breakdown of paddle brands for the entire field. My guess is that Paddletek would end up looking better than Joola if you compare the % of field (probably quite low) with the % of medals (I am gussying much higher). I do realize that Anna Leigh and Christian are 2 of the probably few Paddletek players and are driving the medal counts.

My Plantar Fasciitis got real bad but putting the Move GameDay Pro insoles in both my court shoes and regular shoes has really helped. I also wear ankle compression sleeves when I play and they make a huge difference as well. Now I can play everyday without worry. For those with P.F. that wear sandals a lot, you have to get some with an arch (Oofos sandals are the best IMO) as regular flat sandals will never allow the P.F. to heal. Hope this helps!

I just want to say as someone who is in the 3.5-4 range and plays about 3 times a week, I expect my paddles to last for about a year with decent performance. Replacing my paddle every 3 months seems a bit excessive to me!

Compressed the core like a “spring like material”?
@EricRogstad

The claim at 30:39 that the set of players who play with a paddle for a year or more is a "small subset" seems suspicious to me. I would guess that there are more casual players who rarely upgrade their paddles than hardcore players who are playing many times per week and are very sensitive to changes in paddle performance.

Good information filled podcast. Looking at the paddle database the difference between the highest power paddle's serve speed as compared to the average paddle is only about 10% (Gearbox Elongated 61.3, Azul 55.9). That probably translates into a slight advantage during a match. What we don't have is the serve speed of a corrupted paddle. 20% faster? 30% faster?

Great pod as always. Just got my NEXUS ProStar. Banking on the foam injected cells will keep any collapsing or deforming from happening. Adhesion to the PP is another concern. Wouldn't "break in" change the "muted" feel" as time goes on?

I think how many pros are using the joola paddles year over year is enough of a stat. The medals is a bit of a red herring. If more players are using that paddle, then more will medal with it. But would it not be more interesting to see how many pros are choosing the joolas who are not contracted with Joola. I.e. given the option, the pro would pick the paddle that they feel gives them the best chance to win. Would love to see how many have hopped over to Joola.

If they are trying to deweaponize the serve and think that the drop serve is the solution, they are wrong. The amount of spin that you can induce on a drop serve is huge. Also, taller players will get higher bounces due to dropping from a greater height, thus have a greater angle of attack compared to a shorter person doing the same.

Great pod by the KewCast team! I have a few questions if you can answer. First, when a paddle like the Joola's or other foam paddles become hotter, is it the foam or the honecomb core that is causing the change. I had always thought it was the foam before today when we learned that this was common practice for some time to put pressure on the core when making the paddles. Second, would an X-Ray image show if a paddle's core is corrupted? I recall Chris cutting a Gen 2 open and it was crushed from the factory near where the foam is but I didn't know if you would see that in the image. Thanks.

I find it surprising that Joola admitted that the Gen 3 paddles intentionally used polypropylene cores that were compressed, from say for example, 17 mm to 16 mm. So not only was the foam that causes the "trampoline" effect a "compressible material" that may violate 2.E.1, but so is the entire core. Don't you think this admission gives USAP the upperhand in the Joola lawsuit?

I agree that the hand SPEED score is not intuitive! A higher speed score should mean more speed. The other metrics are intuitive in that they are associated with weights, so more force needed. It should at least be renamed to something more intuitive (speed resistance, etc)

Drop serves can be wicked.. The teacher i learned PB from thought drop serves would eventually be the norm, so she told me to learn and work with that.. You can rip at a drop serve with full power as you hit upward imparting large amounts of top spin on the ball. Same with corkscrew serves from a drop, I think pro’s will quickly demonstrate some awesome serves from the drop if they make the change.

Ridiculous these people complain about pickleball courts being close. If you live on a golf course you are going to get balls in your yard. Most pickleball courts are in parks. Heck if you live on a park expect some noise. It won't work making paddles quieter. People can play with older model paddles that make noise.

The difference with pickleball is it’s played a lot at night, when people are home and hope to have a more quiet time. I enjoy pickleball and play a lot but have you been near a house or inside a house that has 3+ crowded pickleball courts near it? It is insane noise. It’s incredibly annoying. And I am a pickleball fan. I’ve been at golf course homes, lived in one, you barely hear anything. I can’t compare parks

Honolulu Pickleball Company is quickly dropping ranks in my book. You guys are dead on that the paddles have no consistent theme. Why name your company Honolulu Pickleball when you are going to make everything medieval themed...? And then you slap a bible verse on the top? As a non-christian, I really don't appreciate that touch and it comes off as selfish and shortsighted. And then to top all this off, when asked about how titanium isn't actually titanium in their paddles, he lied to cover his ass and said everyone in the industry refers to PET as titanium...no they don't, you just don't want to admit fault and look stupid. I was high on this company to begin with and the more I learn and consider, the less I like.
