Keweenaw Sauna Stories: Highlights from Sauna Week 2024

Sauna. Commonly, a wooden box or room... stove... rocks. Light the fire. Build the heat. Splash. But it's more than that, isn't it? It's a room that cleanses. In the most literal sense - washing your body with sweat and heat, vitta strikes, and water chugs. The spiritual cleansing - a moment of human and environmental connection. Conversation, bonding, birthing, loving, living.
As part of Finlandia Foundation National's Sauna Week 2024, we collaborated with the Finnish Theme Committee (FFN Copper Country Chapter) to collect the memories, histories, and perspectives on sauna culture here in the Keweenaw.
This edit is a small sampling of the conversations held over Sauna Week. Interviews were held inside a lovely sauna built by Copper Country Saunas in Hancock, Michigan.
