2:59 This guy is very right! A lot of East Asian societies in general are materialistic.... they measure people by "success" by seeing how much money they make/what cars they own... I noticed as well that they place heavy importance on "designer clothes" (more like stupidly overpriced clothes). Not saying this behaviour isn't prominent in the west, but in Europe where I am from i was never exposed to this type of materialism or emphasis on wealth, so being exposed to Korea's "golden-spoon" "chaebol" classist society, and classism based bullying, really was shocking to me....
@okwago2 ай бұрын
why do you broaden the Korean matter to "lots of Asian societies" all the way? I have also seen the study case about the value comparisons by country that he mentioned and, Korea and another country (probably spain) was the only different country about the collected answers for most important thing for life, that is, material wealth. Also about Fashion, the girl in the middle of the video mentioned like Japan and Europe people wear Uniqlo fashion more. that means Japanese people care less about their designer clothes. it depends on the term "a lot of" but when you say a lot of East Asian countries, it usually means China(Taiwan) and Japan whether you add" in general" or not , right? then actually materialism isn't as intense in Japan as you consider. People especially outside of Tokyo lead humble lives with humble clothes.

@@okwagoJapan is a highly run on consumerism and they LOVE material things. They all jump on the next fad and spend spend spend. Academics and hierarchy are everything there. @okwago2 ай бұрын
@@411faithhopelove you are wrong and just trying to devalue Japan out of malicious intention. Lower levels of personal debt suggest that individuals are cautious about borrowing and spending beyond their means. And the popularity of minimalism like the long run fast fashion trend reflects a cultural shift towards valuing simplicity over the accumulation of goods unlike Korea where people prefer brand handbags and luxurious German cars and personal debt among people is such a social problem.

The current lack of respect the younger generation has to elders, the socioeconomic pressures placed on young people, the lack of basic kindness and consideration modern Koreans have towards each other. I've visited alot of family over the years in Korea, and the latest time I went back - was shocked by how rude and dismissive people are. Well, I suppose it is a consequence of too much obedience to old fashioned values. Anyway, old people should not be blamed for the lack of diversity, it has to do with Asian culture of comformity.Young people often do the same just because it is fashionable. The industry of entertainment has the best examples. I think Eastern countries walk their own pace, westerners should not tell them what is right and wrong.The Us are very present in South Korean life but it is just an influence which sometimes ignores a way of life and a philosophy that has deeper roots in Korean minds than American trends.

I think most of these answers from these interviewers are ridiculous and comes from an entitled view compared to the older generation which mostly grew up poor and fighting hard to get South Korea where it is today. I honestly think there is a severe condition among the young there developing of not truly understanding the value of how unique being Korean is. I believe it is because of this uniqueness that is responsible for the Korean "wave" in the world right now. I don't think the youth in South Korea truly understand the value of Korean culture. What I do say that Koreans can change is to get back to centering on CHRISTIAN morals and become more compassionate and loving in their actions and thinking, which in itself, by practicing such behavior, will change Korean society and people to be better. If they practice love and compassion won't they become more loving and less judgemental? Like the older people who are still open and caring who mostly live in the countryside and not the cities.

Every country has problems but I fear one day Korea is going to go to the extreme left and it's not gonna look pretty. They are gonna wish they could go back to being conservative. Accepting everyone and all variety is not wise because not all ideas and lifestyles are healthy. Some are downright harmful and produce mental health issues, isolation, violence.
@themoralagent29 күн бұрын
being left wing does not mean accepting everyone. in fact, by nature of being a label it is inherently exclusionary to some extent. if a society has more progressive ideas, it necessarily cannot accept all ideas. i would like to know what specifically you are implying with this comment.
@themoralagent29 күн бұрын
i would also like to add that conservative korea already had an overwhelming mental health problem, and still currently has a massive bout of isolation. the more strict the competitive labor market, the easier it is to atomize and alienate workers from each other. its no surprise people often purport korean culture as being materialistic and many koreans are shy and avoidant. it may be relatively safe, but that isnt exclusive to one ideological framework. i feel your comment is a bit reductive
